When Ryan came to look at our project, he told us he had his contractor's license and could also help with other things. Being first-time homeowners, and having Ryan being recommended to us, we decided to hire him to texture the walls, paint, and put up trim.
He came the very next week to begin the project with his crew, even though I had mentioned the electrician wasn't finished with his portion, but he said it didn't matter, and also requested us to have all the doors and trim and paint colors picked out before he came which gave us two days to do so. On day 2 of his work here, I cam in the morning to check on the things and found th trim around the doors and windows had been put up in a craftsmen style which we hadn't requested, but I felt uncomfortable telling Ryan because of how he had reacted to certain requests and things previously. So once my husband got off work, I went with him to the house to show him the trim work that had been done and he politely asked Ryan if he could mock up one window showing us the trim done with a 90 degree flush angle on one side and the craftsmen on the other so we could see both options. At the request, Ryan just exploded and started yelling, throwing his arms up, and telling him "he would NOT change it. And how it doesn't even matter, its just trim. Why are you making such a big deal about this." We calmly told him this was our first house and we spending a great deal our money to fix it up. he (Ryan) was so mad, and angrily suggested that he was done. I (Lisa) was upset at how he had yelled at my husband (who is the calmest person on the planet) and told Ryan that we would no longer be needing him for our project. He was again, very upset, and then threatened to put a lean on our house if we didn't pay him for his two days of work (which we had already put a $3,000 deposit down for and paid for all the materials). He billed us an additional $4250 for his two days of work, all of which had to be re-done by other professionals because it was not done properly - the wall texturing, the paint, and the trim. All of which was confirmed by every single professional that came to give us a bid after and or did the work -- confirmed it was done poorly, wrongly, or just done bad.
This was an extremely emotional experience for my husband and I, and took us a long time to recover from, both on the emotional and most especially, financial side. It was our first home purchase together, something we had dreamed of for so long, and we just had such an awful initial experience due to Ryan. I am writing this because I hope NO ONE has to endure the same experience as we did.
