So when we got pregnant we took all the classes - like ALL of them. I read books. I googled everything like a nut into the late hours of the night (I was going to get up to pee anyway every hour...). My husband even broke out his highlighter and flagged important pages -we were surrrrious! But then all that preparation basically goes POOF once dear baby comes screaming into the world. You're exhausted, you have a crying baby, moms - we are still healing from the fact a HUMAN just came out of you...so yeah, you may forget to "gently wipe the right eye from the tear duct outward when washing dear baby's face" or how to "lean baby's head back ever so slightly until they open their mouth and then quickly allow them to latch..." It's just about survival in those initial weeks and months! So my one advice is pick the right Ped to help guide you!! I'm so thankful and feel lucky we chose Kaminker (simply based on my sister in law's rec as she uses Kaminker as her kids' ped too). From the start Kaminker was incredibly patient (I admittedly over worry and over think everything...) and put my mind at ease immediately. She called us to check in frequently in the beginning - lending advice but not pushing any philosophy on us. With her help we figured out breastfeeding, napping, sleep schedules (loved that she understood we weren't a fan of crying it out and so she modified and worked with us on a strategy to help baby's sleep - at 4 months he started sleeping through all on his own) ... ultimately with her help we figured out who we are as parents. She returned calls the same day (and we called A LOT) and answered everything from why his poop looked the way it did to how to soothe our baby when he came down with his first cold. I can't say enough about how awesome her and her staff have been! Thanks to her I'm now slightly less neurotic ;).

During an initial visit, Dr. Kaminker suggested anemia testing for my mixed race child based on the observation that "looked pretty pale." Given the substantial variation in complexion among multiracial children, I found it concerning that such an assessment appeared to be initiated primarily on visual appearance without broader clinical context being discussed. Additionally, I was informed that breastmilk had "no nutritional value" and advised to transition to cow's milk. No supporting explanation, evidence, or discussion of my child's nutritional status, developmental needs, or contemporary pediatric guidance was provided. Evidence based medical recommendations should be accompanied by clinical rationale, particularly when advising changes to infant or toddler nutrition. Subsequently, we sought evaluation from another physician, who ruled out anemia. This outcome further reinforced concerns regarding the basis for the initial assessment.

Boy, am I glad I did. She is so friendly, fun, and professional. She'll make you smile and made me feel comfortable throughout my journey (especially since this was my first pregnancy). My husband came to all my appointments and she gave him time to ask questions as well and keep him involved in the appointment which was great. We love her Irish charm. Only complaint is that she often talks under her breath and fast with her accent so you may have to ask her to repeat herself to fully understand. -Waiting Room: Clean, comfortable, never crowded!, and didn't ever have to wait too long - Office Staff: Friendly and professional -Parking/Location: It's right across the street from the UCLA Santa Monica hospital which is very convenient and ensures Dr. Cookes will stop in to see you when and after you deliver and also be on time for appointments. Hard part is you either get lucky and get a metered street spot and walk (being pregnant this isn't the best option) or pay $20 to park underground. -Delivery/After: She came at a perfect time for my baby to be delivered and walked me through the whole thing. She also made everyone laugh throughout the process which lightened the mood but was still serious to get the job done right. She also performed my son's circumcision which went well. -Other notes: When taking a tour at the UCLA hospital prior to delivery the staff all had such positive things to say about Dr. Crookes. Our baby's pediatrician and my PCP also had great things to say. It was very comforting to hear those things prior to delivery. If my husband and I decided to have another child, I'll be calling Dr. Crookes. :)

She lays out all options for you and treats care like a discussion. I've never felt rushed like I have with other doctors.
