Dr. Vastine is a very nice man and perhaps a very good ophthalmologist. But my experience has not been positive. I had DMEK surgery with perhaps the finest corneal transplant surgeon worldwide, (Dr. Mark Terry, Portland, OR) and a few years later during local follow ups, Dr. Vastine recommended YAG laser surgery on that eye. At the time I was asymptomatic for any problems but he said, "if I were you, I'd do it." The result of that surgery has left me with posterior vitreous detachment with a resultant disturbing amount of floaters. He has tried to explain it away, saying that at my age floaters usually appear anyway, but I know it was only due to the laser trauma. Subsequent to that surgery there have been several follow ups. During one of them I requested that if I remain a patient and due to the problems with the surgery, would he be kind enough to let me see Dr. Sanders for my yearly refraction visits at no ($75.) co-pay. He said, "that sounds reasonable." I thanked him for putting that in my chart. I had one complimentary visit and now over a year has passed and I am due for an appointment (at no charge) with Dr. Sanders. Dr. Vastine is going back on his word. I feel that not charging the $75. co-pay is the least he can do for the ongoing lifelong problems he has caused. read more
