I am unable to provide a positive review due to concerns about the standard of care provided by the doctor for my cousin. Having observed the doctor's approach, it seemed that the emphasis was on asserting authority rather than delivering suitable medical attention. Following the operation, the condition of my cousin's foot wound and infection deteriorated under the doctor's care at Atherton Park Post Acute and Belmont Healthcare Center. I will not give him a good review because, after witnessing his style of care for my cousin, I saw a doctor who lies and manipulates care by insisting that he is always right. After his operation, he did not support my cousin's care, which deteriorated. He likes to bewilder his patients with a rude demeanor and always does things in a negative tone and attitude, then tells his lies to his colleagues in front of the patient then he makes up stories about his patients and the nurses. I went to see Dr. Kaplan for a toenail injury. Initially, he told me it was likely fungus, so I agreed to a sample of my nail for a biopsy, which came back negative for fungus. Then he said that I'd likely need some form of surgery to remove the nail. The vibe was a bit off, as Dr. Kaplan's bedside manner was unusually familiar for someone I had just met. In addition, the office is setup in a way where HIPAA seems to be ignored - exam room doors are left open and conversations are held loudly and publicly in this very small office, which made me uncomfortable. Dr. Kaplan's wife works the front desk and is rude and rushed most of the time. I went to another podiatrist for a second opinion and they strongly recommended against surgery. Their bedside manner was much better and so I continued my care with them. A few months after transferring my care, I received a letter saying that Dr. Kaplan's office had sent me to collections over a $10 copay that was supposedly unpaid. I called the office many times to resolve the issue and my calls were not returned. After checking my records, I realized that I HAD paid the copay and discovered that the office actually had charged me twice and THEY owed ME $10! So essentially, they owed me money, then sent me to collections over it, then wouldn't call me back. When I finally reached the front desk after months of trying, they argued with me. I had to bring in proof of everything to have the collections removed and to get MY $10 that they owed me. Avoid this practice at all costs! read more

i went to see Dr for laser nail treatment.... once I was finished with my treatments (that didnt even work and I paid well over $1,000) he tried to sell me on laser hair removal.....under the impression that he had done this before I agreed to let him do a small area to see if i liked it. well he BURNED me and left a HORRIBLE scar on my leg. To makes matters worse when i showed him he tired to pretend it was barely visible. Horrible. I went to Dr. Kaplan a couple of years ago because of an ingrown toenail. He told me I had the problem because i needed orthopedic shoes. And he just so happened to sell orthopedic shoes! (Another podiatrist told me later I do not need orthopedic shoes) He then took a toenail sample saying he thought I had an infected toe. Apparently he sent it to the same sketchy lab that others complained about and I only found out after I got a bill for over $400.00. His wife told me that my insurance turned down the claim but when I called Aetna, they said they'd never received it. I call several times and was told over and over that they would fix it but nothing. I finally went to the office and Sylvia told me she was going on vacation and would get back to me. She ended up screaming at me when I asked when that would be. I finally reached a friendly person at their billing company who submitted the claim for real and everything was resolved in a couple of days. Stay away. Beware of this place! I have had series of things that went wrong! I came in for a follow up and he started telling me about the results from the lab. Huh? I had no idea anything was being sent to the lab. He cut my toe nail off because he told me it was hanging and that he was afraid I would get hurt. He didn't mention anything about a lab. He told me what was wrong with my feet so not sure why it had to be sent to a lab. I was told to come back for a 2nd visit only to see if the meds he gave me were working ok. I didn't complain at the time though. At the time, my feet were starting to improve so I let it go. So not sure why he decided to give me more meds. Then I broke out in hives. So I stopped all meds. First, my doctor called to reach Dr. Kaplan to talk about the meds and my hives and he never returned her call. I then went online to my insurance co. statement and saw a $399 lab bill from a lab called "Gold Labs". I never heard of this place! I tried to call Dr. Kaplan for more explanation. NO RESPONSE. I then went to try and pay for it online with my FSA med card. You can't do it online. I wish I would have been given the opportunity to choose my own lab!!! I called Dr. Kaplan several times after this. NO RESPONSE. My doctor's office called Dr. Kaplan several more times. NO RESPONSE. I called the number on the lab bill, only to have some guy say hello????? and you can tell it was a cell phone! REALLY, how unprofessional is that! After several more calls, my doctor's office finally got a hold of someone at Dr. Kaplan's office and was told Dr. Kaplan will call me. NOPE. Today, I received a call from another doctor...who ended up being the guy that answered his cell from Gold Lab. He said, Dr. Kaplan said you needed to speak to me. I am Dr. Goldstein from Gold Labs. HUH??? Why didn't Dr. Kaplan call me? Dr. Goldstein isn't my doctor. I didn't request any lab work, so I shouldn't even have this bill!!! This whole situation is becoming a nightmare. If Dr. Kaplan would have explained to me what he wanted to do, I would have suggested my own lab. If Dr. Kaplan would have called me back the first time I tried calling him maybe this would have all worked out somehow. Now I am dealing with all of this BS. Don't go there. read more

I visited Dr Kaplan over a year ago and am still dealing with his unprofessional, greedy behavior. Read your bill carefully. He will try to con you into paying for services that you did not know you were getting, and probably did not even get them. He sends biopsy's to "gold lab" which i believe is because he is getting kickbacks every time he sends something. I am trying to get out of a $200 bill from them, since a biopsy is NOT a standard procedure. I consulted with three other podiatrists. I could honestly say Dr. Kaplan's patients has the highest rate of getting their problems/health/wounds to heal amongst them all. There is an issue with some billing, however, but that's with the company that handles the billing (a supposedly lost check that was cashed?), but that's not the fault of Dr. Kaplan's office. I've been not really treating a severe ingrown big toenail for years. I knew it had to be fixed. I knew there was a permanent solution. But I was OK with the temporary fix my nail tech did every month with my pedicure. Until this week. I forgot to remind her to really dig it out, and it bothered me a bit after. So I tried to fix it myself and made it worse. The pain increased, and I called Dr Kaplan's office and was able to be seen immediately. He was extremely knowledgeable and explained very clearly to me how this came to be, showing he has a clear understanding of holistic medicine. He was also fun to talk to, and got the job done quickly and painlessly. He had a pre-printed sheet with clear instructions for me to take home. They said they need to confirm with my insurance and doctor before they start the treatment. 1 months later still no calls or update from them. Dr. Kaplan's office is either a fraudulent or utterly incompetent business that is sending me bills for made-up procedures and doesn't even bother returning patient calls about medical results! I had two visits: 1st: I came in with a broken toe. David Kaplan x-rayed it and wrapped it up. 2nd: Follow-up visit in which I did nothing but tell him I felt fine. No further x-rays or anything needed. I have insurance and had a $35 copay for the first visit, and a $0 copay for the second. I paid the $35 due right away over the phone. Then I received another bill from his office for that first visit saying I hadn't paid yet. It took about 5 calls to their billing line, Footcare Specialists, to finally get the matter resolved. (I had a confirmation number and statement from my bank showing I paid). Today, several months later, I just got a bill for $141 without stating what it was for. I called my insurance and they said it was for an in-office surgery according to the code (which they don't fully cover). I didn't have any in-office surgery!!! Now I have to fight this over the phone. Also, during my first visit, Dr. Kaplan expressed concern about some other serious medical problems I mentioned I was having (that were not really foot-related). I was appreciative then in his interest (but also curious--because he knew I already had a different fantastic specialist helping me with it). He recommended that I get a blood test at Quest and said he would order them. I went to Quest (toddler in hand), only to have a several hour wait because they didn't have the order. A week after the tests, I called Dr. Kaplan's office politely inquiring as to the results. His secretary told me he wasn't in the office, but would call me back the next day. I called back the next day, and was told the same thing--that he would call me back. A week goes by. I made two more calls to the office to receive the same message. No call back. Finally, the fourth week of attempted calls, I told the secretary that it was obvious that Dr. Kaplan didn't care about his patients and expressed my frustration. Only then did he call back and leave a voice message saying that the blood tests were normal. (Note to Dr. Kaplan--If the secretary doesn't give you messages, then she should be fired. If she did, it's too bad I wasn't a priority to be called back). In sum, visiting his office is costing me much more emotional and financial stress than was ever worth it. I wish I had never ever gone. read more

If there was 0 I would give his clinic that. I was very disappointed by the follow-up. I went to his clinic a few times due to some issues I was having for my feet. Dr. Kaplan got his assistant to strap my feet, this was supposed to last until my next visit which was a few weeks later.....to make a long story short it lasted a few days. Second time I went he strapped my feet, this lasted a bit longer. Everytime I went I asked them what my co-payment was and I was told that I would get an invoice from billing. 7 months passed by and received an invoice in the mail for over $400 dollars, the next day I received another invoice for over $125. I called his office and spoke to Sylvia to get clarification as I didn't understand how the charges were broken down...... she told my that Dr. Kaplan was very busy and he would call me back. I waited a few days and called back, again she told me he was very busy and that he would call me next week....I waited a week and she told me he he would call me back. I waited an additional 2 weeks, left a voicemail for him to call back, I've yet to hear from him. Back to the billing, I ended up paying my bill in the full amount since I didn't hear anything back, was tiered of it lingering, a month passed by and I received another bill in the mail for the amount I already paid. I called the billing company and was told that it showed the amount not being paid on my account and they were not to sure what happened. The billing company tried to reach his office and called me back saying they were not able to get a hold of anyone at his office because they were on vacation. I forgot to add the amount I paid showed on my credit card statement, so I had valid proof. I got a call from the billing company saying that they talked to Sylvia and the information was not forwarded to the billing company. I've yet to hear anything from his office. If you see on yelp he has another add with only 1 and a half stars. read more

Dr. Kaplan gave me a cortisone shot without informing me about what he was doing. In fact, he told me that he was just going to draw away the liquid from my swollen ankle. I was extremely upset. This is a violation of patient informed consent rule. I have a right to know what the doctor is going to do to me. Extremely unprofessional. Moreover, being a medical practitioner, I know that cortisone shots may be damaging to joints and cause chronic issues later on. I consider filing a complaint with the medical board. I've been suffering from ingrown toe nail problems for several years and have went to many podiatrists over the years. Dr. Kaplan and his staffs were the best and I've been back many times and will be back in the future. I just had another procedure earlier this week and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything he used was top standard in cleanliness and the procedure was very satisfactory. I felt like Dr. Kaplan went out of his way to make sure I was happy with the results, and even changed my prescription of antibodies due to my personal preference. Dr. Kaplan was my foot doc in shining armor after I stress fractured my sezmoid bone. I visited the ER at Sequoia in Redwood City who sent me away with a diagnosis of "foot injury". Dr. Kaplan spotted the broken bone within a minute of reviewing the x-ray. I visited often during the treatment and we tried all methods to relieve the pain but ultimately went in for surgery to remove the bone. 4 months post surgery I'm doing great! Running, wearing (smaller) high heels and I was able to dance at my wedding. I felt like Sylvia and David really cheered me on to get better and gave me great medical treatment in the mean time. It was bittersweet to get released the other day, great to be all better but sad I don't get to visit the office anymore. read more

Dr. Kaplan.... THE GREAT Dr. Kaplan! What would I have done with out this man. He has not only been a GREAT doctor, he has been a great source of comfort in times I had no hope of reliefe. I was shot at work in a robbery and have a long lasting injury that includes nerve pain/gait problems/neropathy etc. to try and keep it short has been a nightmare to get help with with regard to the workers comp world. He not only helped me get treatments fast he also went WAY beyond what is required of him. I have seen some of these reviews and I have to say, lots of these people plain and simple dont have their s**t together but still I see them dealt with PROFESSIONALLY by he and his staff, they deserve to be escorted out of the office. Dr. Kaplan and his staff are awesome. I became a patient of Dr. Kaplan this past July when I hurt my ankle/foot and ended up in the ER. I called Dr. Kaplan's office the day after my ER visit and they were able to see me that day. Dr Kaplan looked at the same xrays that I took at the hospital the night before and confirmed I had a fracture. He then discovered that this fracture was 2yrs old and my old podiatrist never caught it. Dr. Kaplan and his staff are very nice and they really care about your care. The worst of my problems was not that he was 1 hour late to my appointment, and when I asked 30 minutes in what the status was, she said " I don't know, I texted him." Be careful of Dr. Kaplan adding "procedures" to collect your money. I went in for a consultation for a simple, minor ingrown toenail. I made a follow up appointment to have it removed. Little did he know that I had not hit my deductible; so everything he was billing me for was going directly through my insurance and to me. I received a bill from his office for a $100 toe nail cutting.. which was supposedly during his consultation. When he was examining my toe, he dug the shit out of it trying to "fix" it. He ended up just leaving my sore and I had to come back a few weeks later. When he did remove my ingrown toenail I later received a $500 bill from a biopsy lab. Without my knowledge or consent he sent my perfectly clean and healthy piece of my toenail for a biopsy. His office told me it was standard procedure. I contacted 3 other san mateo podiatrists who confirmed that they would only send for a biopsy when there is a fungus. I am 25.. I have normal, healthy, 25 year old feet. They knew they did something wrong by making a "deal " with the lab.. so now the lab wants $200... I am sending Dr. Kaplan my bill. read more

I saw Dr. Kaplan last spring for some pain I was having in my toe joint. When I was there, he noticed I had a small callous on my foot and asked if I'd like to have it removed. I said "no," because my insurance wouldn't pay for it, and he said "oh no, I wouldn't charge for this." So as not to be awkward, I said fine. He pared down the callous, and then tried to sell me some expensive foot creams, which I declined. Then (back to why I went to see him in the first place), he told me my toe pain was not fixable, but he could try a series of expensive treatments for it in his office. I felt like he kept trying to sell me things and I didn't trust him, so I went for a second opinion. The second podiatrist told me I just needed to stretch my toe to get rid of the pain and voila, my toe is now fine. Over a year later, I received a bill from Dr. Kaplan's office for over $130 for the callous removal. He said he wouldn't charge for it, and then he turned around and tried to collect from my insurance. Completely unethical. read more

My husband went in to Dr. Kaplan for the below services. * Laser treatment of foot fungus to eliminate it 1 visit for the actual surgery and follow-up visits as needed. * Bunion surgery estimate 1 visit Based on his experience with Dr. Kaplan, the following is a summary of his experience. * Customer Orientation including time management and organization: Poor Time Management: He was late for each visit. The first visit had a 1/2 hour delay, and the 2nd and 3rd much longer. Each time this was due to him talking on the phone with friends. Organization: When in for the surgery follow-up visit, he could not find the pictures he took of the feet prior to the surgery and just told my husband that it was fine--his fungus was gone. At the 3rd visit, he said that he was the expert on bunion surgery. He never gave us an estimate. Billing: We did not receive a bill for the 3rd visit and assumed that because he did not provide an estimate we would not be billed. 3 years later we received a bill from a billing agency and were told we did not receive it until now because he did not have the correct address--just another example of his disorganization. Additionally, we came in with a coupon from the newspaper giving $100 off. Dr. Kaplan said he would take care of it. However, he did not and then said we either didn't have it or he didn't put the ad in the newspaper. * Results Orientation: Poor The laser surgery performed was ineffective. The fungus remained. He insisted at the 2nd visit that another laser treatment was not required. The fungus became worse than prior to the first visit. So we went to another place and had the surgery done. It required 2 treatments and the end result was significantly better. We were told that the treatment care provided by Dr. Kaplan to him would not work, and it didn't even though the treatment plan was followed religiously by my husband. Overall Rating for Dr. Kaplan based on the above: Needs Improvement & Not Recommended He charged a lot of money for the ineffective toe fungus treatment and follow-up treatment items. This whole episode was a rip-off that caused us to waste a lot of both time and money. It seems like Dr. Kaplan is more concerned about getting the $s upfront for the surgery than he is about his treatment being effective. read more
