This is a $300 charge which you are told about AFTER your cancer diagnosis. You have to be pretty callous to his someone who just got a cancer diagnosis with a "pay for this or no surgery" approach. In addition Dr. Beitsch told me he removed 3 lymph nodes during surgery. The test results showed that while he removed three chunks of tissue he only got 1 lymph node. If you are in critical need of a surgeon he will get you in quickly, but if you have any other options I would take them.

We got there and they handed me a huge stack of paperwork to fill out. By page 2 my right hand was numb and by page 5 my right hand and elbow were HURTING. A Physicians Assistant came in and asked questions, did the blood pressure, weight (gasp), the "follow my finger with your eyes," etc. and then in walks "TheAccentMan." He's tall, had curly dark hair and a VERY strong accent. I wish I could tell you what kind of accent it was, but I have no clue. He starts out telling me that he usually does surgery when the fallen tonsil is even with or past the C1 vertebre. Mine is touching the top of C1 so I am in sort of a limbo. He agreed with "TheCuteOne," that it didn't look like things were too crowded in there *but* he seemed a little more concerned about the involuntary twitching and tingling and numbness in my arms.. the times when it is there and I hadn't just sneezed. He said that he wanted to see an MRI of my brain before making any big decisions on my care or the plan. I mentioned that I had an MRI of my brain last October but not only was he not impressed about the fact that it was done 10 months ago, he also didn't like Open MRIs. He says he's going to send me to a regular MRI for a brain scan and he would give me a prescription for valium. He said "take one when you leave home and take the other when you See The Machine." My stomach starts singing "rolling rolling rolling, keep them doggies rolling." He then starts vividly explaining the surgery to me and how painful it is during recovery after he slices all the muscles in my neck and how I probably wanted to avoid the surgery if it wasn't absolutely necessary. I was sitting on the doctor's table and the more he explained about the surgery the weaker and more nauseated I felt. I had that hot flash feeling like I was going to pass out and I quickly laid down on the table. At least, I had a table to lay down on. My mother, sitting upright in a chair next to a wall with my dad at her side started felling the same way. Both of us were just about ready to pass out when he finished his story. So, we know that he probably doesn't think surgery is the answer... but we also know that there is enough symptoms for him to want to look at things from another angle before making a decision. ---------------------- Dr. Loyola, after seeing a second set of MRIs, decided that I wasn't a candidate for the surgery at that time... but he was the one that made it very clear to me that I needed to have updated MRIs once a year and to watch for symptom progression. Dr. Loyola did a posterior fossa decompression for a friend of mine, and hasn't done a Chiari surgery since then. He told another friend Chiari was nothing. Luckily I didn't let him cut my brain open... but I found another surgeon who did and believed that Chiari was something and that I was a candidate for surgery and saved my life. I am a wimp when it comes to needles…read more Don't tell me you're going to poke me with a needle. Don't show me a needle. Don't use the word "Needle" and my name or any of my body parts in the same sentence. Dr. Fraizer can stick a needle in my spine anytime it's necessary. That's how good he is. I've had trouble with my neck for years but always figured it was stress and therefore just tight muscles, get a massage, it will go away (which it never did but I chalked that up to I'm a wimp for deep tissue massage so I rarely did the massage thing). Anyway, when my right hand started going numb and falling asleep every time I lay down ... and not just that "my hand's asleep tingling" type tingling, but such a deep "sleep" that it was very painful. To the point of waking me up every half hour and having to get up to stop the tingle. When I finally asked my family doctor about it, he sent me to Dr. Fraizer. After x-rays and MRI's, they found several issues with my spine and one of the problems is pinching of the nerves that run to my arms/hands. Solutions: Drugs. Surgery. Inject steroids to reduce the swelling that is causing the pinching. I can tell you that the mere mention of "...inject steroids in the cervical spine ..." made me want to imitate Eddie Murphey in Trading Places ("OMG! I can walk! It's a miracle!") as I was running out of his office. Dr, Fraizer assured me that I would NOT feel a thing. And this is a man true to his word. I did not feel a thing. I never saw the needle. I never felt the needle. And I can turn my neck to a degree that I haven't been able to for quite a while. My hands have only gone to sleep twice since the injection. And aside from the needle issue, Dr. Fraizer was friendly, professional and very thorough. He took the time to show me exactly what was going on, pointing out on both the x-rays and the MRI the areas that were damaged and that he was working on. Hopefully the injection will take care of the problem indefinitely and we won't get to the surgery phase. If that becomes necessary, however, I have no worries that Dr. Fraizer will do an excellent job! He deserves my first 5-star rating.

I had a lot of neck pain and headaches due to spinal stenosis and degeneration of the discs in my…read moreneck; this had gone on for two years. I had a fusion of C 5-6 and C 6-7. Since the surgery my neck has gotten better so now I don't have the headaches I used to have every night. There is tightness of the muscles behind the fusion and some soreness but it is much improved overall and I look forward to a full recovery, which can take I think up to a year. I had no problem with the incision at all. For those who need this type of surgery, he was recommended to me as the best in Texas by one of my other doctors, and I highly recommend him.
