While preparing to travel overseas for work, I was required to obtain a dental examination and…read moreX-rays for medical clearance. During my initial appointment, the female dentist did not personally review my clearance paperwork with me. Instead, she directed a hygienist to complete the evaluation. The hygienist documented that my upper wisdom teeth were symptomatic and recommended their removal, but no explanation or context was provided. Before I left the office, an appointment was scheduled for the extraction of my wisdom teeth. At the time, I was confused by the recommendation. My wisdom teeth were not causing me any problems, and I did not understand why removal was being suggested. Because the information documented on my clearance paperwork appeared to indicate that extraction was necessary for my departure, I spent nearly a month attempting to contact the office for clarification. I lived approximately three hours away and repeatedly called the office, but I was unable to reach anyone. A few days before my scheduled extraction, the office manager finally contacted me. I was unable to speak at length at that moment, so I informed her that I would arrive early for my appointment in hopes of discussing the diagnosis with a dentist. My primary concern was understanding why my teeth had been classified as symptomatic and ensuring that my paperwork accurately reflected my condition. I also wanted to preserve my wisdom teeth if removal was not medically necessary. I arrived one hour before my appointment. The office manager and staff were aware of my arrival. Several staff members appeared to discuss my situation among themselves, but no one came to speak with me directly. Eventually, my appointment time arrived, and I was still seeking clarification while the staff began preparing me for the extraction procedure. Fortunately, an Asian male dentist took the time to review my case and explain the findings. He stated that my wisdom teeth were not truly symptomatic but were somewhere between asymptomatic and symptomatic. He explained that removal was being recommended due to hypereruption and as a preventive measure because the limited space in the back of my mouth could potentially increase the risk of future cavities. This explanation differed significantly from what had been documented on my paperwork. In fact, the clarification he provided was consistent with what I had understood all along: my wisdom teeth were not causing active problems. All I had wanted from the beginning was an accurate explanation of my diagnosis and for my paperwork to reflect my actual condition. Had the original dentist reviewed the paperwork with me, had someone returned my calls, or had the office manager taken the time to address my concerns, I believe the outcome could have been very different. This was one of the most disappointing experiences I have ever had in a healthcare setting. From my perspective, the extraction of wisdom teeth represented a billable procedure, and throughout this process I often felt more like a billable service than a patient. My concerns were repeatedly overlooked, and meaningful communication was absent until the day of the procedure itself. Ultimately, I consented to the extraction because my overseas employment depended on obtaining medical clearance. I was unwilling to jeopardize my career and future opportunities because of documentation that I believed was inaccurate and had been unable to get corrected. My wisdom teeth were not causing me any problems, yet I allowed them to be removed because I felt I had no other realistic option. To this day, I am left wondering whether the extractions were truly necessary and feeling that the situation could have been avoided entirely through clear communication, proper documentation, and patient-centered care.

I've lived in the Richmond area for over 40 years and found their business practices concerning. My 19-year-old son, 17-year-old daughter, and I had appointments last week. After being informed that our new patient visits would total $577 for the same services (since we are self-pay), I agreed to proceed. While I understand my son is an adult, I made it clear that I would be paying for everything. I grew concerned when my dentist suggested pulling a back tooth due to a gap that might cause bacteria issues, despite no current problems plus making recommendation to see their periodontist and pushing a possible the idea of an implant for the tooth; as well as, selling them on their orthodontist after I mentioned that I had seen the orthodontist the day before...which they said they never got x-rays for and it didn't matter because theirs would be different. Additionally, we were told afterward that my daughter's visit would cost $60 more due to extra X-rays, which we were not informed about in advance. It's comparable to a mechanic doing extra work without getting your approval first. I decided to go along with it, appreciating the new patient discount. They then informed us my son would need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one and scheduled it for this week, again without giving any pricing information. When he asked if there would be extra costs, they implied there shouldn't be. Later, we found out this service would cost over $200. This was surprising since we were told otherwise, and they knew I was responsible for the payments. When I asked why we didn't receive a discount for my son's previous visit since he didn't get a cleaning the first time, they said his services were different. How? When the whole purpose of the visit was for a check up and cleaning. After speaking with the office manager, Lauren, I felt unheard and unacknowledged as a customer. She did not apologize or address my concerns, only defending their position. As a business coach and consultant, I've rarely encountered such poor customer service communication outside of the restaurant industry. We ultimately decided not to proceed with the additional service. Virginia Family Dentistry's communication with patients is lacking at best and unethical at worst. They lost out on over $1,500 of upcoming services we would have needed and the lifetime value of a customer. Choose carefully! They will not be getting any recommendations from me. It's noteworthy that they've disabled reviews on Facebook, which might explain the abundance of positive reviews here. I prefer practices that prioritize people over profits and are not influenced by private equity.

I spent almost an hour waiting to be seen until I finally decided to get up and leave since no one was updating me on how much longer it would be until I was seen by the actual dentist. There is zero communication and professionalism in this establishment. I even told the front desk that I was leaving due to waiting for over an hour in the back and she rolled her eyes so I just decided to walk out.

The dentist and assistant did the left side of my mouth. When they finished, the dentist checked my bite down. My teeth on the right side of my face were no longer touching when I bit down. She buffed out the fillings more. Checked my bite down again, still not correct. This process continues for at least 30 min after I had already been in the chair for an hour. She continues, and it improves slightly but I'm still not able to properly chew like I could before. The dentist buffed some more and even though I let her know, it still doesn't feel correct, she says if she does anymore the filling will come out. Afterward, I was told I would need to come back in again for the other side. I told them I was moving (out of state) before this appointment and needed an appointment quicker than their first option. They never told me I would need two appointments. When I got home, my boyfriend asked to see (he has never had fillings and didn't know what they looked like). He instantly saw it, and said it looked like paper or something on my tooth. When I looked in the mirror, I saw how noticeable it was. It looks like a glob of paste on my tooth. My bite down is not correct: my top and bottom teeth don't fully touch on the right side. Although I want them to fix it, I have doubts on going back. Also, I got sick two days after my first cleaning with them, I've been coughing and sneezing out yellow mucus for 5 days straight. P.S. I was told I have 11 cavities at my initial cleaning here, which honestly didn't sound correct. My dental care could be better but that didn't match up with my last dental appointment some years ago.

The security guard let us know the urgent care may not be open due to lack of students but we'd see what we could do. We got in and urgent care wasn't open but when I explained what was going on, they told me to check in and see if oral surgery would take me. As I went to do that, a doctor came out and said oral surgery would be taking extractions for the day but that was all. I checked in and they had me back in a chair within 30 mins tops. The receptionists were so nice and when I was doing my insurance and paperwork, the receptionist even said she didn't know how I could joke with the pain I was in and she hoped they got me taken care of soon. The nurse that took me back was so so kind. She asked if I was sure I didn't want to save my tooth since insurance would pay for it but when I was in tears from the pain she said she understood. The dentist pulling my tooth practically knew what tooth it was before I gave any info. He was very knowledgeable and had good bedside manners. Everything was done in about 20 minutes once the questions and history were done. I will definitely be switching to their practice as a patient because everyone was absolutely so kind and helpful. I feel a million times better, even with being a little sore from an extraction of a molar. They let me take a photo of the tooth too which, as a healthcare worker, the medical photos are always fun for me.
