Detached crown placed at VCU student clinic (Sept 2025)

I was a patient at the VCU School of Dentistry student clinic. A large filling on an upper left tooth fell out, leaving exposed dentin and a risk of infection. On March 27, 2025 I arrived for a scheduled follow up and found my assigned student absent; the front desk had no notice, and I sat in the empty lobby for almost an hour. Another student and a supervising professor eventually examined me, took an X-ray (which I paid for), and said the absent student needed to prepare the treatment plan. I repeatedly contacted the Appeals and Grievance Committee and the clinic's student group coordinators asking for an appointment to repair the tooth. I received no timely help, and on April 21, 2025 I was told that I had "outgrown the student clinic" and should seek private care or the Faculty Practice. VCU delayed and then failed to send my X-rays to my new dentist, forcing me to pay for duplicate imaging. In addition to this, a crown placed on a different tooth by the student clinic earlier in 2025 detached in September. I was told that the clinic should re-seal it free of charge. However, I received confusing and inconsistent information from VCU and was ultimately refused readmission to Student Practice. Because VCU didn't transfer my X-rays and declined follow up care, I paid for duplicate imaging and will pay out of pocket to reseal the crown. I felt penalized for raising the issue about the absent student. I hope the clinic improves scheduling and record transfers so other patients aren't left in the same position.

Excellent care I had a great experience at VCU, from getting a tooth extracted to get an implant . Everyone that worked with me was very positive and helpful. The parking was excruciating! Bring $4 cash to park ! No one other than staff wanted to help ! Security sent me to wrong place! Parking was very poor but somewhat sympathetic!

Finna fangirl here for a minute: Carlos aka front desk renaissance man extraordinaire, makes every appointment reminder, every wait in the waiting room, every patient form that needs to be updated, and everything in between, a pleasure; he infuses interactions with so much joy! The smile in his voice shines through from the moment he asks "How are you?" ... Its inspiring to see somebody work that hard, multitask that well, competently maintain a bustling office, and still find space to make each and every client feel seen, heard, greeted, answered and tended to. Oh, and all while employing his bilingual superpowers to graciously address various clients in their preferred language. In my book, the man is a legend. The Orthodontics department runs efficiently - none of those unexplained long waits past appointment time (unlike so many pediatric offices that consistently run behind schedule). With VCU dental care orthodontics, if you arrive on time for your appointment you will be taken back in a timely manner. And if you need help from another department on the same floor, and he has time, Carlos will very likely escort you there. My child's orthodontist, Dr.Powers, has elegant bedside manner and a sweet disposition. She notices & complements little things like my daughter's latest nail art, keeps it as fun as possible w/o ever being dismissive of any fears & concerns that arise. To that point, Dr.Powers & her assistants don't talk down to my daughter the way some professionals do (being petite, this phenomenon is often exaggerated in other settings where she's treated like a much younger child). Meeting her as a smart kid who can understand things about her own health is a big part of solidifying a trusting doctor/ patient relationship. The day she got the braces, Dr. Powers' assistant reported "When we were explaining the procedure, [your daughter] said she prepared for today by watching videos [tutorials] of braces being put on." ... I thought it was so cool the assistant took time to praise my child for doing research, kind of bragging on her, in front of her. That builds confidence and touched my heart to see yet another example of how caring the whole practice truly are. YES kid friendly

I rarely write reviews, and the ones I usually write are positive. I went to Virginia Family…read moreDentistry because of the glowing reviews, but my experience was quite different. I've lived in the Richmond area for over 40 years and found their business practices concerning. My 19-year-old son, 17-year-old daughter, and I had appointments last week. After being informed that our new patient visits would total $577 for the same services (since we are self-pay), I agreed to proceed. While I understand my son is an adult, I made it clear that I would be paying for everything. I grew concerned when my dentist suggested pulling a back tooth due to a gap that might cause bacteria issues, despite no current problems plus making recommendation to see their periodontist and pushing a possible the idea of an implant for the tooth; as well as, selling them on their orthodontist after I mentioned that I had seen the orthodontist the day before...which they said they never got x-rays for and it didn't matter because theirs would be different. Additionally, we were told afterward that my daughter's visit would cost $60 more due to extra X-rays, which we were not informed about in advance. It's comparable to a mechanic doing extra work without getting your approval first. I decided to go along with it, appreciating the new patient discount. They then informed us my son would need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one and scheduled it for this week, again without giving any pricing information. When he asked if there would be extra costs, they implied there shouldn't be. Later, we found out this service would cost over $200. This was surprising since we were told otherwise, and they knew I was responsible for the payments. When I asked why we didn't receive a discount for my son's previous visit since he didn't get a cleaning the first time, they said his services were different. How? When the whole purpose of the visit was for a check up and cleaning. After speaking with the office manager, Lauren, I felt unheard and unacknowledged as a customer. She did not apologize or address my concerns, only defending their position. As a business coach and consultant, I've rarely encountered such poor customer service communication outside of the restaurant industry. We ultimately decided not to proceed with the additional service. Virginia Family Dentistry's communication with patients is lacking at best and unethical at worst. They lost out on over $1,500 of upcoming services we would have needed and the lifetime value of a customer. Choose carefully! They will not be getting any recommendations from me. It's noteworthy that they've disabled reviews on Facebook, which might explain the abundance of positive reviews here. I prefer practices that prioritize people over profits and are not influenced by private equity.

From the very first moment I walked through their doors, I was greeted so warmly that I knew I was in the right place. Their receptionist and front office personnel are very warm, inviting, and professional. But it didn't stop there. The initial process was informative with the comfort and ease necessary to help me make a decision. After that first visit, I was sold! When the day came to receive my braces, I was so excited! Their caring service, is by far the BEST! And they worked within my budget and I couldn't be happier. My regular dentist, who I've been with for 15 years, really gave me an EXCELLENT referral when he recommended Virginia Family Dentistry. They are now my favorite place to visit. I'm so glad I listened to my dentist!

I used to absolutely love Edinburgh Family Dentistry 100%. So much so I recommended them to…read moreeveryone I knew. Sadly, over the past two years customer service for the adults in our household has declined significantly. I'm going share as 4 stars, at this point it's really closer to 3 1/2 but they don't give you an option for that, which I'm torn since they do take great care of my children. Let's start with the positives: The hygienist and Doctor who work with our children are wonderful. They are gentle, kind, and patient. They have never pushed unnecessary treatments. They simply do their cleanings, make observations, and offer suggestions. Never had an issue with how our kids are treated. They even allow you to sit in the room with them. This part of their practice has always been excellent. The wait time once you arrive and check in is never long, I don't believe we've ever waited more than 10 minutes to be seen except one time when someone called out so they were short staffed. The office is also very clean. However, our experience as adults has been very frustrating. My husband was essentially "Ghosted" as a patient. He was contacted about moving his appointment earlier, which he agreed to only if his original appointment could remain in case he couldn't make it ( He was traveling for work that week). They canceled his original appointment anyways, and then later canceled another appointment because insurance was "asking questions" but no one ever followed back up with him like they said they would. In the end they dictated his schedule instead of working with it, and he never got his mouth completed after starting a deep cleaning. Recently they repeatedly kept contacting me during work hours asking for insurance information even though I had told them I did not have it on hand and would send it as soon as I could that day. The constant texts during the workday feel excessive and stressful. Another limitation is pain management, they only offer injections for numbing. If you don't numb well with needles like me they can't accommodate you. They won't even do my teeth cleanings until one tooth issue is resolved elsewhere. Scheduling is also a bit difficult, appointments are typically booked close to a year out, and although we tried to switch to their newer location, they told me they are still working on insurance coverage there so we're stuck at this office. Today was another example of the disorganization. We had a 2pm appointment and arrived 15 minutes early. The staff was in a meeting and kept all patients waiting outside until exactly 2PM. As more and more patients arrived for their appointments they eventually put a sign on the door telling people to return at 1PM even though it was already past that and they still weren't available until 2. It was confusing and frustrating especially for those who arrive on time and early. During cleanings you won't see the dentist for more than 5 minutes unless you have specific concerns. Overall, this used to be a 5-star office for us. Now it feels very inconsistent. Excellent for children so far.

The office staff is horrible at scheduling and notifying you. It took several months to schedule my…read morewife's first appointment in 2025. After that appointment and becoming an established patient, Edinburgh Family Dentistry in Chesapeake could not schedule her next appointment until 2026. She asked them, aren't cleaning supposed to be every six months? This office said yes, but they do not have any availability, and my wife could be put on a cancellation list for an early appointment. When it came time for my wife's appointment this February 2026, this dentist's office called my wife three hours before her appointment and said her hygienist was out sick and they had to cancel her appointment. She asked about seeing another hygienist, and they told her they are short-staffed. Edinburgh Family Dentistry makes sure to inform you that you will be charged a late or no-show fee if you do not give advance notice within 24 hours of canceling your appointment with them. My wife asked when they will be able to schedule her for the next cleaning appointment, since this cancellation by the dentist's office, they said February 2027. My wife said that would be two years without seeing a dentist, but the office staff didn't seem to see a problem with that. If you are an established patient, you would think you would be accommodated after the office canceled your appointment, which you made a year ago. This is absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional. Maybe Edinburgh Family Dentistry should have thought twice before opening their Moyock office until they figure out their staffing problems, or maybe pay their hygienists a better wage to keep their attrition rate down. My wife did like her Dentist, but hates that she must deal with an office staff that is clueless to patient needs. In response to the owner's response. This is not a misunderstanding. It appears to be an ongoing issue with Edinburgh Family Dentistry. See Traci Gray's & Anne Buckner's one-star reviews from one & seven months ago. They both had to experience the same one-year extension befall them. It's clearly an unwillingness to train your obtuse and unenlightened office staff, which resulted in your colleague, Dr. G, losing a patient.

I unfortunately had to move out-of-state, and he tried his best to help with my tooth problems before I had to move. He's knowledgeable, caring, and patient. He always tried to be conservative with the work he did on my teeth, focusing on the most important areas and didn't push expensive treatments on me that weren't 100% necessary. A lot of dentists I went to would 1.) look at my teeth and then decide on a plethora of things to do to them, without consulting me - and b) forget about the issues I had and/or not address them fully. Dr Davia always listened to my concerns and kept it simple, unless it was clear a more complex procedure was definitely needed. I wish I could give a bonus star for how painless the injections were (lots of dentists seem to rush this part and it causes a lot of pain and anxiety for me).
