It was my first time trying daves hot chicken. I really enjoyed the bright graffiti on the wall it makes the place pop. The employee was really nice when taking our order but I feel they need 2 cashiers at the time. It was very busy Thursday night and she was the only one taking orders. I ordered a Lucky Charm shake and I do wish more lucky charms came with it. The loaded fries were very good but our order was a little messy as the container had food stains all over it and inside the bag. The slider was very tasty. It was our first time trying Daves Hot chicken, and honestly pretty good! We were nervous from seeing some negative reviews and honestly don't understand why. It was so good! We have had various hot chicken meals at different restaurants and this has moved to the top. I do wish the meals came with a drink, I feel that it is more pricey than competitors but it is worth it but that can be a deal breaker for some. I love the slushy drinks too. The spice levels and breading were really good! Customer service was very friendly considering we were new and she was patient, I did not like though they ran out of plastic knives and my son was bummed out no ketchup when they served fries as not everyone likes fries with the sauce. I was excited to check this place out. It's within a week of their opening and on Friday night and I got a craving for some chicken fingers. Came at about 8:30 or so in evening and happy to see people inside but not too crazy. There was only one person in front of me (order at counter.). The staff were super helpful and polite...even offering to go over the menu with me. But their menu is super simple so no help needed today. There were two in my party. We each got a combo, mine was a slider and a tender. It included a side of pickle slices and fries. When ordering they asked the spicy level which I picked medium (the gal said medium is equivalent to jalapeño heat.) my combo was $13.99 so when I was asked if I wanted a drink I was taken a little off guard as $13.99 from a counter joint (in my opinion) include a drink. No biggie...I added one. Order came out about 10 minutes later which is reasonable and the food was piping hot. Finding a seat was no problem. Being a Friday night, there were a lot of teenagers around but they were fine, minding their business with friends. Made me feel a bit old but I digress. The chicken didn't seem as spicy as I thought it might, but I'd prefer under than over spiced. Flavor was good but in all honesty I couldn't distinguish any thing unique to this chicken joint. Would I try it again? Perhaps if the particular craving kicked in. Recommend? Definitely. This used to be one of my favorite places to go prior to Dave's taking over space. They closed the front door and make all people go in the side entrance which must entertain the staff watching many people trying to come in through from doors but they are locked. There is a sign. But most people ignore signs. I've never eaten here before and was told by my daughter it was amazing. So.... We had to try it. I am not a spicey person so I went mild and honestly it was really good. They are served very hot (temperature) where it'll take the roof of your mouth off like it did mine. But hey that's my dumb fault eating it still super hot. Food prices are average, drinks cost are more than other places. The decor is oddly decorated with graffiti as its decor with diamond steel plates. It's clean in there. The yelling out of numbers Is annoying as it remjnds me of that in out place. I try all the hot chicken places and this one's an easy favorite. I've been 3 times now and the food has been consistently flavored and good. I go for hot, and they have more complex flavor than most hot chicken. Enough to make my lips tingle but not take my breath away. Savory, spicy, a touch sweet, and never too dry. It's so good. Fries are seasoned and crunchy. They're soda is excellent, like they have their syrup ratio set higher so it's extra sweet. IYKYK. This is my second time going to Dave's Hot Chicken, after the first time when I said, I would never return. Because of my review, and I guess the survey I filled out, they sent me a code to be able to visit Dave's Hot Chicken again. I really hesitated, but today I went. Went to the one in Oxnard, CA, located by the TJ Maxx and Nordstrom Rack. First, the gal at the front who was at the register was not at the register anymore when I approached. She was standing by the back and yelled out to me something I couldn't understand, three different times that she was yelling across the area. She finally approached me and what she was asking me was if I was paying with cash or a card, which I don't really understand why that matters. I told her it was a gift card or keep coupon code that I had gotten from doing a survey. And then she started taking my order. She seemed very rushed and like I was putting her out. It was very uncomfortable from the beginning to the end, especially that there were like eight people all sitting and standing right behind me waiting for their food, which is an extremely uncomfortable position to be in. In my opinion, nobody should be standing right behind you waiting for their food and there should be an area for that. It's completely bizarre! Very bad design in the restaurant. Next, she didn't know how to do the code and had to go get somebody else who also didn't know how to do it until she pushed a bunch of buttons and figured it out. It took 19 minutes for me to get my order. Every single available table and bar area was dirty with crumbs left behind, drink stains and liquid, and sticky stuff. I had to clean a space just so that I could eat in the restaurant. Fries were cold and stale. I returned them to get new ones. Ordered the number three with the slider and the chicken tender. Chicken tender is also cold, so overcooked on the outside that it was like chewing cardboard, and absolutely the worst chicken tender I've ever had in my life. The tender comes in a white piece of bread. I don't understand what a piece of white bread that looks like they just pulled it right out of the loaf of bread package, is doing as a part of this meal! It's like, you're already eating bread with the slider. Why do you need more bread? Seems like a waste of money. What do people do with that piece of bread anyway? I also said that I was eating in the restaurant. Everyone else had red plastic baskets and metal trays that were open with their food exposed. Mine was given to me in black plastic container that was closed, as if were actually a to-go container. Maybe they forgot, didn't pay attention, didn't read the receipts? Maybe that's why it sat back there and got cold and disgusting for so long? The last thing I will say about their food, and this is just a training issue, but when somebody orders no spice for the chicken, finger and slider, that should be a key indicator that they should be warning the customer that the fries are extremely spicy. Had I known that, I would not have ordered them. Neither one of my parents could ever eat the fries because of how spicy they are, and when you don't know the restaurant, and you don't know that about their fries, it's not only an unpleasant surprise for your stomach, but it's a waste of money. Last note: You have to ask for the code to the restroom, which is super annoying when they're are so many people sitting up there waiting for their food. It's like you feel exposed of anything of your privacy. So I didn't ask and left with dirty hands. I always give places to chances and was only going to give this place one because it was so horrible the first time. Now they have been given two chances at two different places and I am done. I really do not know how they stay in business and keep popping up new locations. It baffles my mind because what it means to me is that people have gotten very used to spending $16 for a really crappy meal with horrible chicken fingers and fries that taste like they came out of the package frozen and then were fried.
