Place seemed clean and suitable for a quick bite, very much a fast food joint. Like fast food, the wait was less than ten minutes for a spicy chicken tender and medium spicy medium size loaded fries with chicken chunks. The spicy chicken tender was moist, tender, and the texture was even and had some chew and slight crunch. It was a decent size, but it wouldn't fill me up by itself. My nephew had asked for some spicy chicken, to have a little kick to it. But he said that the "Spicy" level chicken "felt like a kick to the groin". The medium chicken was also tasty, and I preferred it over the spicy one. These were a bit smaller, like the width of two nickels side by side. What really struck me as off were the fries themselves. They were salty, and they had sliced pickles and a dash of cheese and sauce--but they were practically naked. What the hell were they doing back there? I remembered a super long and pretty disorganized line on free slider day, and I had mostly visited the El Cerrito location since then. I moved back to Oakland about a week ago, and I knew it wouldn't take long before I returned to Dave's. This afternoon, there was only one person behind the counter, both taking orders and calling numbers/serving orders once they were ready. I ordered two cauliflower sliders with fries. The cauliflower sliders were huge! (See photo.) They're not quite on par with the taste of the chicken, but they're undoubtedly healthier and have some of the same flavors. Since Dave't was a bit understaffed, I wanted to leave a tip, but I did not see a tip jar. I asked if there was a tip jar somewhere and was told that the business does not accept cash. There are at least three spots in Downtown Oakland - Hotbird and World Famous Hotboys are the others we've tried - though this is the only one that's part of a local chain. Jamie W and I had been wanting to try it for a while, so we stopped by after a walk around Lake Merritt. It was fairly busy, but we managed to snag a table once we ordered. To get straight to the point, Dave's is alright. Nothing great, but nothing awful. I love Nashville Hot Chicken with a passion, and this spot just did not hit the way I hoped. Especially with how popular of a chain this spot is, I was just disappointed! I got their sliders with Mac and cheese and fries to go. The order was made pretty quick which was a plus! I took it back to my place to eat and was pleased when I opened the box! It looked great. However, taking my bite, it was just... meh. The chicken was not that spicy (and I got it hot!!) but at least it had favor. I would amp up the salt levels a bit more if I am being honest (salt enhanced flavor so maybe that's all it lacked?) The size of the sliders was great and I liked the slaw. The chicken was just again, meh. The sauce the food comes with really saves it. The Mac and cheese was decent! I am a huge fan of their chicken tenders and sliders, so of course I had to order both! I actually haven't been to this location before so decided to stop by on my way home. Parking is a little tough in the area since it is in the heart of downtown. I ordered online and waited at least 20 minutes before it was ready. Not sure if it was ready before then since I was one out of the two customers there. Turns out my order was underneath the counter. Also, the app didn't indicate that it was ready, but I decided to ask since I felt like it was waiting a long time. The chicken was juicy and tender. I've been meaning to try Dave's Hot Chicken for awhile after seeing their LA and Denver locations! Went to a show at the Paramount Theater and walked over to Dave's. The menu is pretty simple with their different order packages (Sliders/ tenders with sides). Went for the number 2 which comes with 2 sliders and a side of fires. It's cool you can pick two different spice levels for each slider! Got the Mild and Hot to try ($16 total). The Hot is bearable and you won't be dying for water (it's Extra Hot or higher that will get you to that burn feeling!) You can also order some of their sauce and honey to add on to your sliders and it's bomb! They have a bunch of different spice levels, so we went with HOT on the sliders, Extra Hot on the tenders, and we went for one slider at their hottest level, Reaper, which you have to sign a waiver for. First impression, the slider was easily my favorite. The size of a single slider is basically the size of a normal chicken sandwich. The bread was soft and slaw complimented the chicken really well. Their sauce is also tasty. The chicken tender was juicy, and if you like chicken tenders this one will hit the spot. The reaper level spicy was slightly disappointing. It's hilarious that I had to sign a waiver bc it wasn't that spicy. It's definitely spicy but not waiver level spicy. It's one of those that it's spicy but not flavorful. I'd stick with either hot or extra hot. The fries were crinkle style and crispy. Really good fries. And their milkshake was tasty. Dave's is relatively quick, prioritizes giving out hot fries, and allows you to order in the restaurant or beforehand online. They'll bag it to go but you're welcome to eat inside. The bathroom was pretty clean and staff walks around and cleans tables so dining in is pretty comfortable. I've been here a few times and I think my favorite order is the two tender box (medium or hot ) with fries. They give honey packets so I pour those over the chicken. My partner likes the slider so I love that we can order a combo with one of each and split the fries if we're not super hungry. I also love that they have utensils. There's not a lot to recommend : I ordered mild to be cautious on spice level and it wasn't so much as it was -still- quite spicy, but it didn't taste good. It was covered in this spice powder so that it over powered the sando and all you could taste was the powdery spice. The powder also gave me cotton mouth, I was sooooo thirsty chugging water.
