I had already done quite a bit of maintenance work on the door, and am quite familiar with garage door tension springs and other associated door parts, yet...I never saw the frayed cable. We've used Dave's Garage Doors in the past to repair our garage door, and to service our opener. Today our garage door opener (cheapo Genie) quit working so we called Dave's to have them take a look at it. Technician Andrew M. was out in less than 3 hours of my call. He determined we had a board that burned out among other things, and it was decided that we would need a new opener. After he consulted with my husband he installed a new opener and all the hardware needed quickly, professionally and neatly. My husband likes to interact with people who come over to do installations and things, and he found Andrew to be personable and friendly. I left a message to call me soonest of call on Monday. I found that there was plenty of other companies that provided Sunday service for same weekday rates and any time. Precision Garage Door came out that night at 7 PM and put the door back operational as advertised. At this writing Tuesday NO call back from Dave's. Be very careful with this company. My property manager sent them out to look at a tenant that was having issues with his garage door. Their feedback was that the opener needed to be replaced because "the circuit board is just completely out" - which is a very generic and meaningless statement. So they tried to get authorization to install a new garage door opener for $600 while on site. Luckily, my property manager checked with me first, and I said hold off. Turns out after asking the tenant a few questions, there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the garage door opener. The only problem was that the remote was not working properly. This was obvious by just pressing the button on the wall. And upon further investigation, the only thing wrong with the remote was the pushbutton switch was failing. The rest of the remote was fine. Now, I don't expect them to know how to repair the pushbutton switch on the garage remote (I repaired it with a 10 cent part and a little soldering, and the whole thing is still working fine 4 months later), but replacement remotes for this opener are easily available online. If they were honest, they would have said the opener is fine, but the remote needs to be replaced - we don't have one, but you can find one online, taken their $ for the service call, and been done. But instead, they told the management company that the whole opener needed to be replaced for a nonsense reason, hoping to get a quick approval for a $600 job and nobody would have ever known the difference. I could say perhaps this was due to incompetence, but that seems extremely unlikely - as these are garage door techs, and all you have to do is press the wall switch to see that the opener was working totally fine. If a door doesn't open with the remote, the first thing you do is check if the problem is with the opener or the remote. There is no way to make a mistake on that. So this is just purely fraudulent practice. The fact that they did not respond to further questioning from my property manager about this back that up. They got caught and don't want to admit it. I don't know if this is standard practice for them or just one bad tech. But if it was a bad apple, their response should have been apologetic and shocked by the story - yet they seem to have nothing to say. So I will not be using them ever again, and have instructed my property manager never to call them again either. Be careful with these guys!!! Do not trust their "diagnosis", especially if it involves replacing a whole system. read more

Mike suggested going with two springs instead of the one that broke and gave me reasons for and against doing this. Totally no pressure for the upgrade. They saved me hundreds of dollars! The rail from our garage door opener had broken off from the wall (not just unbolted, but the metal was snapped off). I had another guy from a different company come look at it and he said it was not repairable, and that I would need to get a new opener. My choices were to purchase one from him (more costly, but came with additional warranty) or buy from Home Depot or somewhere similar and then just pay for install. His install prices were a bit high ($80 more than Home Depot, but Home Depot had a 4-6 week wait). I went ahead and bought a unit from Home Depot and decided to call around a bit more to get a better installation price. I called Dave's and the install price was $30 more than Home Depot (and $50 less than the competition), but could be done the next day. I made an appointment. The following day someone from Dave's came and discovered I have a beam in the way, and the unit I purchased could not be used in that spot. He told me they sell one that could be trimmed to fit, but now my total would be $225 more than paying for the one I purchased to be installed. Ugh. He left me the quote and went on his way for me to make decisions. I called back and gave them the go ahead, as it seemed I was out of options. A second Dave's employee came back ready to install the new, non-Home Depot unit. I told him the story. He looked at the broken rail and said, "I can fix that. No problem." Woo hoo! He just saved me $489! My hero! He easily could have sold me the new unit and not bothered to help me out. I SO appreciate this kind of customer service and will 100% call back when I need help again. My unit is older, so I know it will go out eventually, and I know exactly who I will be buying it from. I had horrible experiences with two other garage door companies. One of them only wanted to sell me new everything and charged me $50 for the premise visit. The other company (which had installed new springs 18 months prior) basically did nothing except try to rewind the springs, tell me the door was too heavy for the load and couldn't be adjusted any more, and then charge me $130 visit charge. After he was gone, the door was soon unlevel again and shortly thereafter the cable came off the drum and the door was stuck halfway. When I called this company back to tell them what had happened, they told me to call someone closer because they were in Hillsboro. They did not appear to want to work on the door any more, nor did they offer a refund. So, I called Dave's Garage Doors, whose tech came out the next day and found multiple issues that neither of the others had bothered to notice: One side rail was loose and barely secure to the wall, the springs were not correctly tightened, bolts were loose, and the door opener was pulling the door too far up; the door wasn't balanced, so instead of correctly adjusting the spring tension, someone had simply turned up the force adjustment on the opener. The tech from Dave's Garage Doors caught all of this, and fixed it. This was a life saver for me and I'm grateful that there remain companies who care about service and who take the time to do a job correctly. Kudos to Dave's Garage Doors and its employees.
