Suffice it to say, for now, that if you need a fruit or vegetable (the standards), a deli salad, garden plant (in season), seafood, pot pie, or sweet treat, get yourself to Layton Fruit Market. Today I tried two new items: German potato salad made by the famous Pulaski Inn of Cudahy, and safe-to-eat-raw chocolate chunk cookie dough. The former was nearly as good as my grandma's, with sufficient bacon and a well-balanced dressing. I prefer it hot, so a quick trip through the microwave and I was happy. The cookie dough was excellent--big CHUNKS of dark chocolate, and a yummy base sans eggs, making it safe for many.

There were so many unique items to browse, from ornaments and décor to homemade treats. The food and drink options were fantastic -- local food trucks like EZ Tiki, Flip's Mini Donuts, Tots on the Street, and Milwaukee Pretzel Company, plus local beer, made it easy to snack while walking. The weather was decent, which made strolling through the market enjoyable, though it was definitely busy with lots of holiday shoppers. Live music and festive decorations added to the cheerful atmosphere. Parking was convenient with several nearby lots, and the layout made it easy to explore despite the crowds. A fun, lively holiday event -- perfect for shopping, enjoying seasonal treats, and getting into the Christmas spirit!

CITY SLICKER I have…read moredriven by here many times but i have never stopped. Recently I needed zucchini. We were having company over and I wanted to add grilled zucchini to the menu. When I stopped in I was amazed at the large selection of items they had. They also had a bunch of great looking zucchini. The normal price for them was $1.29 a pound but they were on special for 75 cents a pound. I grabbed 3 nice size ones and the total price was $1.83. Now that was a deal. I should have grabbed more. I was also able to meet the owner Chris. She was very friendly and helpful. She actually stopped in to drop off more zucchini. She was also there to see how the store was doing. We also started talking about cooking food and using fresh veggies. As she was talking to me she was looking through the peppers. She picked up two giant green peppers that were going bad and asked me if I could do something with them. I told her Yeah and she gave them to me. In fact, I took them home and roasted them on the fire pit. I also served them to our guests later that day and they loved them. In fact, the guests used them on there brats. I know roasted peppers are not a traditional topping but I must admit they tasted fantastic on the brats. Thanks Chris for giving me these and adding to our already delicious menu. This store is seasonal. I am not sure when they close down but I'm sure when it starts to get cold. I also learned that Chris is the daughter of the famous Jerry Smith who has the farm North of this location. So all of there fresh seasonal veggies come from there. Jerry Smith's farm has a great pumpkin patch for the kids to visit in October. If you haven't been there then I recommend you load up the Family and make a trip there. They also have a Corn Festival coming up in August too. Those events take place at the Jerry Smith Farm and not here. I also have a Yelp Review posted for that location. Okay back to Green Acres. The selection was huge. They had a variety of potatoes and onions, Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, 4 foot tall Dill, corn, hot peppers, green peppers, pickles, watermelon and zucchini. Everything looked amazing. In addition to the fresh vegetables this location also carried flats of flowers too. I really wanted the palm tree for $330.00 It looks so cool plus I would always feel like I'm on vacation if I owned it. So if you are driving down the road and you see a little shack at the side of the road it's Green Acres. It is the place to be. It's like farm living which is the life for me. Yeah I may get allergic from the smell of hay. I do love the country but I also love my big city too. There are some song lyrics mixed in there above...enjoy!!! See Green Acres makes me want to break out in song. I'm happy that people seem to be getting healthier. Places like this are helping us move in the right direction. We need to learn how to make food again and not out of a box but from scratch. It is not only rewarding to do this but it tastes amazing. So I appreciate Green Acres and I can not wait to stop back.

The farm features a corn maze that takes more than 20 seconds to get through, a small petting zoo where kids can feed goats and see a few other animals, and a hayride which takes you around the farm. There was a small fee for the hayride, but the corn maze was free, as was the petting zoo. You just had to donate $.50, I think (might have been less), for the pellets to feed the goats. The store sells seasonal fruits, veggies, bakery, and "gift shop" type items. I will come back again, but I'll try to leave an earlier weekend in October open in my calendar, for a better pumpkin selection. Although, we did find a small pumpkin in great condition that sufficed for this year.

I recently stopped by Pete's Fruit Market for the first time after hearing about it. As soon as I…read morewalked in, I saw buckets of vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, squash, you name it. Most buckets seemed to be about 6-8 inches in diameter and prices ranged from $1 to $5. I only wish they offer smaller buckets instead of such a big bucket. It is hard to buy in bulk with smaller household and I don't like to freeze produce. I was curious about the quality of the produce, but I wasn't too impressed. For example, the apricots looked a little banged up--kind of like the "misfit" produce I've seen before. There was upbeat Mexican music playing, which gave the place a fun vibe, and the store itself isn't that big. A security guard was stationed outside. They had yellow-flesh watermelon at $0.99/lb, and giant seeded watermelons for $16 each--which felt pricey, especially since I had just come from Costco where I got a decent-sized watermelon for $6 (though admittedly smaller than the ones at Pete's). I also noticed mangoes going for $2 each, which again felt steep. I had been hoping to find some Mexican pastries, but nothing really stood out, and there weren't any prepared foods available. However, I saw they got a catering menu which I thought it might be good to have a food court selling those items. I was expecting something more like La Michoacana or Fiesta stores in Texas, but this wasn't it. In the end, I just picked up a few Mexican candies like Pulparindo and called it a day. I was a bit disappointed with the fruit selection, especially the lack of tropical options. On the plus side, they have a fairly large, gated parking lot, which is convenient. I'm glad I visited, but not sure I'll be rushing back anytime soon.

Plenty of vendors selling a variety of goods. Spices, clothing, crafts, sundries, and lots and lots of food. Live entertainment on stages in front of the local bars along the street. Plenty of Farmer's market items, fresh produce, dairy, and homemade meat products. This event seems to keep getting bigger every year. Very well organized, and everyone is very kind and cooperative. Parking along the roadside, or closer parking on residential lawns for a minimal fee.

The tables are set up along the sidewalks right now, but I wonder if it will spill over into the green space around the gazebo if more vendors start taking part in the market. There is parking available on Franklin street, but if the spaces are full it looks like parking is available along Swiss Street. Alternatively, if it ever gains in popularity, there is definitely parking across from Wegner's Inn on St. Martins. I am a big fan of the change. The fair used to be held on the first Monday of every summer month from 6am through noon. I use the term fair loosely because it was just a few people spread out so far from each other. Definitely not what it was 15 years ago. I understand the tradition of a morning farmers market/fair, but it was so inconvenient. Now, since it is every Monday and goes until 7, I can still take part if I have to work late. It's like someone actually listened to my complaining :) There were Port-o-Johns and a wash station set up. I thought that was a nice touch in case anyone were to need a restroom. Please stop in and take advantage of this new market if you are in the area. I want it to succeed and not be reduced to just the Labor Day weekend flea-market style fair.
