I had to drive 90 miles to Ames to pickup my 10' box truck. But the Ames uHaul Center staff was also top-notch and I had an all around lovely moving experience at half the price Penske wanted for the exact same equipment.

Sometimes I think about buying a truck purely so I can…read moremove things without worrying about having space, but since that'd be ridiculous, U-Haul was my next-best option. I've never rented one before, so this was my first experience. I needed one on an insanely short notice (within an hour). I went online, and I saw the quoted prices, and I was like "Okay. I can do that". You'll need to pay a standard rate (per day) for the truck itself as well as a per-mile fee. However, when I clicked on "Book now", the prices actually changed (almost doubled the per-mile fee), so I'll admit to be annoyed there. Regardless, I still booked it to pick it up within an hour. I got there, and the employees seemed a bit confused about things. They, however, still managed to do their jobs to satisfaction, and one of the employees quickly showed me how to open and shut the truck. No particular warnings were given to me which concerns me. When someone goes from driving a tiny sports car to a huge, giant van, I'd love to see employees offer some simple "tips" about how to avoid accidents. I did make it clear it was my first time renting one. I wasn't given any particular extra information about the process or how to drive it. While I was there, someone else was renting an item they'd just purchased because it already had wear marks, and he thought he was buying it new, so that's something to consider. I was a bit annoyed about the change in price again. There was an environmental fee that I wasn't made aware of until I went to sign the receipt. The prices matched the higher prices quoted online. Despite the place closing very soon, the employee didn't explain how to return any of the equipment after-hours. Also, in addition to the per-mile fee, you'll need to fill up the car's gas to the gas level that it had before you received it, so along with paying $1 per mile, you'll also need to refill the gas. It just seems a bit ridiculous. As for the truck itself, it was in good condition. Excellent condition, actually. Everything worked like it was supposed to, and the back/bed/haul-y part of the truck was actually spotless. I was happy about the spotless part because I wanted to put a couch back there, and I didn't want to get it dirty. It actually was cleaner than the ground, so i'm impressed on that matter. Returning the truck was easy-ish. They have instructions posted, but the instructions are honestly kinda vague and confusing if you've never rented before. There's a drop box for after-hours dropping, though, so it's possible to return the truck after hours. You'll need to drop off your contract as well. I received the final receipt. I was properly charged, and they didn't try to claim any damage or extra mileage that didn't happen. So that's good. (I've heard horror stories about rental companies - not this one in particular) Final thoughts: I'd rent here again if I had to, but I wish they had more knowledgeable employees who had taken the time to explain things better to me while I was purchasing. They just seemed to want to do what was technically required and get me out of them. I'm not fond of their pricing scheme either, but that's probably U-Haul wide and not just this location.

Luckily they now have updated 2022 model Vans big enough to fit one bedroom stuff. Service was great. Had no issues picking or dropping the truck off. Prices are reasonable.

I rented a 12' truck to drive from Des Moines to Spokane, WA. My pick-up was really fast. And maybe…read moreit was too fast because the counter agent failed to acknowledge that the truck was dirty. He failed to tell me that it hadn't been serviced. And he didn't seem to notice that the cargo bay was leaking water from recent rains. He did cover everything else about the pick-up, such as damage on the truck. During my drive, I had a hard time seeing in the rain as the truck really needed new wipers. And when a big rig splashed mud on my windshield, I ran out of wiper fluid within a few uses and had to make an emergency stop to refill it. The cargo bay leak didn't affect my belongings, but it could have had I not used protective blankets. These guys are a district office and need to be taking better care of their trucks. I made this reservation more than 2 months in advance, and paid over $1000 for the rental. The truck made it to my destination without other mechanical issues. I notified the folks at my drop-off location about my issues and they were concerned but I would have liked more than an apology. I went with Penske for their repuation, even though they were more than $200 more expensive than Budget. But I can't recommend them and won't consider them first next time I move.

Where to begin? Can't even give this one star as U-Haul, in general, is a TOTAL joke! Not these…read moreguys in particular, however, they did take my reservation for a 20 footer and car hauler!!!! Mind you I already packed, hired movers and ready with obligations to leave out of state 7-31-2025! Lease up and lease begins in another state which I am obligated! Got a call NOT even 24 hours before my resevation (actually 19 hours before) pick up to tell me, "Sorry, we don't have equipment anywhere in Iowa!" Needless to say I lost it as that news sent me scrambling to find a truck and car hauler. They did have ONE truck with NO car hauler in another state 2.45 hours away!!! What in the H good would that do for me now???? Zero. Thankfully PENSKE went completely out of there way to get me what I needed and for the time I needed. But guess what? Yep. The cost. Nearly 639.00 more up and beyond U-Haul price and quote. Round and round I go with CSR and district ONLY to be offered 50.00 bucks for the lack of their incompetence. That's it! Also spent 180.00 plus for boxes at the 63rd street location!!!! It is literally unreal that U-Haul would leave people hanging like this! "It's the busy season sir, and its not guaranteed!" I'm like what good is a reservation if it can't be lived up to? What about my job obligations in another state? What about the people depending on me in said state to be there WHEN I said I would trust in U-Haul to ensure I had the equipment to get out of Dodge??? Never, EVER again will U-Haul see any of my business and I will be the LOUDEST sounding horn against anyone wanting to seek my advice on renting from U-Haul!!!!! You lost a customer forever and your customer service SUCKS!!!!! Mic drop!

The first time I had to leave cause the line was so long and when you are in the middle of moving you can waste precious time waiting in a line where only 1 person is working the counter, checking in trucks, and having to ask about 40 questions to every customer who is renting a truck. All I wanted to do is buy some boxes to make moving my record easy.. It ended up being quite the chore... The man working behind the counter stayed positive and kind to all the customers and the boxes worked great so I gotta give him a 5 stars on politeness and patience, but a 1 star for Uhal on only having 1 employee doing all the jobs on a busy Saturday.. Average the 5 and 1 and get a 3..

They picked me up in 15 minutes, diligently worked to get my car out of the ditch off I-80, and had us back on the road in no time. They clearly communicated at every step of the way, made us feel safe and taken care of, and the price they charged was very reasonable. Additionally, they are compliant with IA DOT regulations and carry liability insurance, which can't be assumed with all towing companies. Definitely recommend Rick's!
