In May of 2018, I attempted to purchase a storage unit from them.
They offer three types of services, one described as "outdoor parking" and two described as "storage". One type of storage is "standard storage, outside", the other is "climate-controlled storage, inside".
I attempted to purchase what they described as "standard storage, outside". Typically, one would think that "standard storage" involves a covered place to store items. You might assume that the difference between "standard storage, outside" and "climate-controlled storage, inside" is that while both are covered boxes, one is climate controlled, with access from indoors, and the other is not climate controlled i.e. standard, with access from the outdoors.
However, as far as it went at the time, one would be mistaken. I was assigned a parking space. Apparently, at the time, "standard storage, outside", referred to a parking space, and "outdoor parking" *also* referred to a parking space. Apparently, at the time, if you wanted a covered location, you had to pony up for the climate-controlled.
To their credit, Squirrel Storage has agreed to refund me my money fully. They did so despite that I was unable to call for half a month, due to the tight timetable between my move and my travel for a prearranged trip to the California wilderness. This full refund, under the circumstances, has certainly restored my faith that the company is not intentionally predatory; it is at most a bit unsteady at representing itself on the Internet. It is in this light that I give them a four-star review.
For posterity, here is a complete record of the customer service interaction: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QQpclNUVdwLSxJEahEoSJxR64flHnZJenIhThj4X-LY/edit?usp=sharing
In case you are judging the rep harshly for threatening possible legal action over the writing of a review by a confirmed intended customer, you may also read my original review here. I confess that the situation seemed quite ridiculous to me at the time; this impression may have bled over: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MgafnHjibq8q-SQpWZum-3_IV7jWSmD0W4wVOV1z310/edit?usp=sharing
For what it's worth, the company's actual storage units seemed quite spacious. Gate access was easy enough. Hopefully, by the time you read this, they will have clarified their advertising.
UPDATE: the full refund arrived appropriately quickly, a couple weeks. read more
