Customer Service and Quality of Work - A New Benchmark!…read more We had a need to reinstall a bumper that was pulled off after contacting a steel pole in Mackinac City. Our plan was to drive to Boyne Mountain for a week long stay. We googled - and then contacted Lake Area on the Friday before Labor Day. Kelsey - the voice on their phone was professional, reassuring, and suggested that we bring it in ASAP to have them take a look. We were able to drive the vehicle - with the bumper carefully stowed inside the car - from Mackinac City to the Boyne area - and easily found the shop. It was now 2:30 pm on Friday before Labor Day. We met Kelsey who was great and she introduced us to Steve - the owner of Lake Area. He greeted us and came out for a look - and suggested that he thought they could do the work that afternoon! Really? - on the Friday before Labor Day weekend. We then planned to contact our daughter who too was staying at Boyne Mountain to come and pick us up while the car was being repaired. No need - Steve and Kelsey suggested we use one of their "loaner" cars. Just top off the gas tank upon returning. To top this off - Kelsey joined us in the parking lot to help us transfer our suitcases and bags from our vehicle to the loaner vehicle for our quick trip to the condo at Boyne. Is this really happening? We unpacked our bags at Boyne and caught a quick breath while simply trying to comprehend the fact that 4 hours earlier we felt our driving vacation around the Midwest had been dealt a serious blow due to the incident in the parking lot in Mackinac City - and out of nowhere - the Lake Area Collision shop - and the amazing people there - had come to the rescue. We brought the loaner car back to the shop around 5:00 pm (they close at 5:30) and our car was sitting our front - job well done!!! We met one of the techs who did the work - and thanked him - and he said he was glad to help! Steve and his team at Lake Area Collision have taken the whole experience associated with a body shop (most of us probably hope we don't have to visit these types of business!) to a level that is unmatched. Perhaps this is just the way we do business - but they not only got us "back on track" with urgency and professionalism, they did it in a way that man other business' could learn from! Thanks Lake Area Collision!!!

I was involved in a collision in January and was referred to Olsen's because they supposedly…read moreoffered loaner vehicles. My car became undrivable before their loaner was available, so I had to bring it in early. At drop-off, I spoke with Mary Jean, who agreed over the phone that I could pay the repair balance in installments since I needed to use my savings to purchase a temporary beater car. Based on that agreement, I went ahead and bought an inexpensive vehicle and waited for the repairs. Once the work was completed, the entire agreement was suddenly denied. I was then contacted by Deb, who immediately began pressuring me to either pay the full balance upfront or sell my car to them at an extremely low and unrealistic price. When I refused, she informed me they would start charging $100 per month just to keep my repaired vehicle on the lot--something never disclosed in advance. She repeatedly referenced a supposed "normal" rate of $100 per day as if it were a threat, even though none of this was part of the original conversation with Mary Jean. The behavior felt strategic and manipulative, designed to corner me into selling them my car. When I arrived with the $2,000 I had borrowed from a friend, the visible shock on Deb's face said everything--she clearly expected I'd have no choice but to give in. The entire situation made me feel like they were taking advantage of someone they assumed couldn't push back. The store manager refused to speak with me by phone and insisted on email only, adding to the frustration. Throughout the ordeal, I received dismissive remarks, including being told I "couldn't be trusted" to pay--even though their last-minute changes were the only reason the situation escalated. I genuinely cannot understand how a business operates this way and stays open. Between the shifting terms, undisclosed fees, pressure tactics, and lack of basic professionalism, this was one of the worst experiences I've had with any repair shop. I would strongly advise others to avoid Olsen's entirely.

Five days before I was set to move to California I hit a deer in my brand new (old) envoy. The car…read morewas just totally mangled and honestly, I wasn't sure if it was even worth fixing as I only had PLPD insurance. AAA had my car towed over to Totten's late that night and I was told to contact them in the morning when the business was open. After speaking with aaa and learning they do absolutely nothing for plpd coverage, I headed to Totten's to find out the damage. Andy was the guy who greeted me and I believe also worked on my car. He was super friendly and clearly knowledgeable about the car and explained everything to me in a way I could understand (I'm mechanically impaired). He told me that I had a nice car and it wasn't a total loss and was worth fixing. The initial quote he gave me was much more than I could afford but as soon as I told him I'd be paying out of pocket with no help from my insurance company he rewrote the estimate and gave me two options - bare minimum but driveable or pre-deer condition (roughly $4,000 and $3,500 respectively) and Given I was working with a budget, as I was planning a huge cross country move, I told him to just make it driveable. To my surprise said he could have it all ready for me by my departure date but I told him I would not be able to pay for it for a month when I got a settlement I'd been expecting. He told me it was no problem and he wouldn't charge me storage, to keep in touch and let me know when I was able to pay. I flew out to California and after three loooong months and checking in once a month or so to let them know I was still fully intending to pay for my car, I finally got my settlement and called them up to pay over the phone. The lady told me it came to a grand total of $3,050. $500 less than the original quote!!!! Yay. I picked it up about two weeks later when I flew home. The car looked almost exactly the way it did before the deer(which was no small feat), it was clean and shiny and just far exceeded my expectations. I was expecting much less considering I'd opted out of the extra body work and aesthetic stuff but I'm pretty sure that he did a lot of extra stuff for me just as a favor since I had to pay so much out of pocket. I appreciated everything they did sooo much so thank you again for everything and I had no problems whatsoever driving to California. I made it and the car runs great! I had some work done here and I had a very hard time with customer service. The work was solid, but…read morethe constant increase in the digital estimate without customer approval was a concern. I was not use to a mechanic having to raise cost for new parts without running it by the customer on the phone first. Be aware of the digital estimate because you will sign on a base estimate of say $1220 and the estimate will update and make it look as if that was the starting price you signed at . This way the final quote will reflect say $3220 and when you look back at the estimate it will look as if you approved them to start at the price of $3000. This way when you get the bill for it and are sticker shocked you will not have a reference point of your starting estimate of $1220. Now I realize that mechanics have to raise cost as they go based on the necessary fixes, but they should always talk with the customer before moving ahead with them and also make an effort to give a quote cap idea of max price so there clients can know if it's something they can afford. Again, I am not saying their work is bad, because physically they did a good job, but when I tried to reach out by phone, no calls were returned. Price kept moving up and I had no idea why, just a growing estimate from the Tek Metric website. So in summary if you don't care about growing cost without conformation then go right ahead. If you however believe in more transparency with how you are spending you money then this is not the place.
