My fiance called to find out if they would do a fuel pump replacement on his truck. The man that answered said no and hung up abruptly before he could even asked an additional question. These days, It is very hard to find a reliable, honest mechanic. I think I have found that diamond in the the rough. My car was telling me that it was getting sick by turning the system lights (battery and brake) on, while I was in drive. The next day, I brought it in to a dealership to get diagnosed. They told me that I needed a new battery, fuses and a new alternator, the cost...somewhere around a grand. I took my car out of there and brought it to Dave's. I parked in their lot in the morning and dropped my keys and a note in his mailbox, explaining what the symptoms were. The orange-line (CTA) is nearby, which makes it very convenient to get to work while the car is being cared for. I received a call from Dave two hours later, he explained what the issue was (a defective alternator) and how much it would be to repair (which is half of what the dealer was asking), what surprised me was that the car would be ready by 5pm. Warranty for all his work and parts are guaranteed for a year. It's been 6 months after the repair and my car is very happy and no issues to report. read more

I have literally gone to him on and off for close to 8 years, and the only thing I have regretted is when I didn't listen to his advice. He is also great in terms of educating his customers to better understand how to take care of their vehicles. While he is very willing to help, he pretty much works alone, so best to make an appointment or be prepared to leave your car for a while. I needed my brakes done and Dave's quote was $100 less than Firestone.. $50-75 less than other small shops. He isn't an overly social guy.. doesn't like to take appointments, but we planned a day for me to drop my car off and leave it overnight. It worked out perfectly. Dave was great at communicating.. he texted me that night to confirm what needed to be done and EXACTLY how much it would cost. I was able to pick my car up by noon the next day and had zero issues. If you're looking for a fancy shop with a waiting room and cable tv in the lobby - this is NOT the place for you. It's a small shop, you take your car to the back, the space is dirty and clearly shows the signs of a busy mechanic. Dave was fair, affordable and kept in touch throughout the process. After reading reviews here I took an appointment with Dave auto shop for the oil change. After reaching the front door which was closed, I felt they are closed but don't know what I thought and took the right turn in a few meters and drove straight to the back door of auto shop. Dave opened the door and asked me to pull in right away. He answered all my questions and did the oil change, all fluid level check, PSI check and even answered all of my questions. But after I explained my situation and need to get back on the road the next day he took an hour out of his busy day to diagnose and repair my car so I could make the 400 mile trip back home. Dave knew I was under a time constraint after I explained my situation. He actually ran, yes ran into his garage to get a diagnostic meter. I knew after talking to him and seeing this effort to take car of me, his customer that I was in good hands. He saved the day and got me back on the road within and hour. The charge less than $15.00 If I or anyone form our company needs auto service in the Chicago area we will take our business to Dave. Honest reliable and fair, a true gentleman! Dave is a good mechanic for basic repairs such as brakes, rotors and oil changes. Anything beyond this he is either not willing or not capable of repairing and/or diagnosing problems. He will give excuses and other temporary fixes instead of actually fixing the problem at the core. Only go here for oil changes and brake replacements. read more

I went to this shop for this first time, and I was very pleased. It's a one-man shop with Dave, the owner, doing all the work. He proved to be a straightforward, no-nonsense guy, and I plan to make this my regular garage. I've had some weird creaking noises coming from under the car, and I'm sure he could have sold me all kinds of expensive new struts, etc., but he advised me to do nothing -- that the sounds were just normal wear on an older car. I appreciated his honesty. The key here is expectations -- it's very much the opposite of a slick, fancy place. It's even a little disheveled. But who cares? Once again Dave doesn't disappoint! I love this guy! I never thought that there would be a day that I would love my mechanic. Again like I stated in my previous review, I hated dealing with mechanics and anything that resembled them. Ugh!!! But after meeting and dealing with Dave, you'll never want to deal with ANYONE ELSE but him. I could move to Zimbabwe and I would still figure out a way to drive my car so he can diagnosis it. Let me tell you about my recent wonderful experience I'm leaving work at 9am which is located by City Hall. On Randolph & LaSalle to be exact. I pull off from the red light and all of a sudden I hear a loud pop. I veer off the side of the road, praying I don't hit anyone as my car is out of control. I see smoke and the car is not stopping. Omg. I have no clue what's happening. Finally the car stops within inches of another parked car. However I'm in the middle of the intersection of Randolph and LaSalle. My first instinct was to cry (like most women) but my inner Olivia Pope came out and said "No fix this shit!" Called Dave. He immediately suggested I call a tow company he deals with. He also stated that it shouldn't run me anymore than 50 or 60 bucks. They came within a half hour...not too bad... but I had a bad experience with the driver. He tried taking advantage of me (see what I'm saying about other mechanics or people that resemble them) and charge me $175. Then when I explained, I do not have that much cash he dropped it to $150. I was not completely satisfied with that. When he finally got the car off of the bed. Dave asked me how much I told him $150. He repeated "$150!!" With an astonishing look on his face. Then he turned to the tow truck guy and glared at him with a pissed look. The guy started shaking his head with great fear. Like he had been caught. He said that's not the price, indicting I'm making that up. He assured Dave he would take care of me. Dave went over to him and whispered something. All I know Dave demaned "You better not!" Uh oh.... haha my mechanic doesn't play. After that the guy charged me $85 but I only gave $80. Dave completely had my back!!! Loved that. It took sometime for Dave to fix the issue with the car, as there were many , but he made sure he kept it fair and with a reasonable range. He really tries to work with you. Omg. I love himmmm!!! He truly saves my life seriously. It makes me shed a tear to know that a human being is this honest, pleasant and helpful within today's world. He's a rarity within his field. Just want to add a new review for Dave. Its been about 3 years since my last review. Dave is still just as reliable as ever. Never lets me down. Think about this... when was the last time you heard a mechanic that goes the extra mile for customers. That's Dave in a nutshell. In the last year or so, we had to change our water pump, fix some electric wiring problems, change a few oil changes, and plug a few nails in the tires. Dave has done an excellent job every time. The prices are always fair. Work was always done in timely manner. Most other mechanics will "recommend" you with unnecessary "maintenance" or "repair" work... Trust me, even if you want to do these things on your car, bring it to Dave for a second opinion. You can thank me later... I have tried to tell Dave to expand his operation for the last 2 years, since he is a one man show. His responds has always been he is afraid that customers won't get the best service if he hires other people. I think that truly shows his character by putting customer service first over monetary gains. Our family really feel lucky to have him as our mechanic. read more

Needed brakes for my 4Runner. I'm so glad I brought it to Dave's Auto Shop. He was dependable and accommodating to my schedule. Fixed my rear brakes as promised. I also asked him to check a leaking cv boots (the dealership stated it needed to be replaced), but he was able fix the leak by replacing a $4.00 faulty clamp, which saved me several hundred dollars from what the dealer quoted. I stuck with Dave through two old, high mileage cars and he always explained my options on repairs and showed me why the part needed to be replaced afterwards.
