DART is definitely not safe... you're taking a risk if you ride this any time. The only time we've used it is for various festivals/events, so there have been loads and loads of people on it. The ride itself isn't bad, and it's fairly well maintained, but there is very little police presence except to check that you have a valid ticket. I would say, if you're going to work during the daytime hours, you should be fine. But carry a thing of pepper spray to be safe. If you're going at night, carry a gun... seriously. Don't shoot anyone unless they aim at you first, k? k. I'm not one for weapons, but there's a fairly high chance you may actually need it on this train. Anyway, have a fun ride! Oh, and if you're from out of town and want to "ride around" to "see the sights," you may want to look into alternative options. The train isn't THAT fun guys! ok... have a safe ride! read more

I've had good experiences riding DART from Richardson to Dallas. It's cheap, comes on time, and you don't have to sit in the God-awful Dallas traffic. The more people that use this system, the better it will become (as long as you demand funding from the City). Get some work done on your commute, read a book, don't worry about getting sideswiped by a Ford F-850 or whatever size they're making those now. My only complaint is on connectivity to the rest of DFW, especially DFW International. A direct-connect from the airport to downtown would be incredible. Of course, expect the token loonies. This public transportation is...public, and in case you forgot, the public is sometimes insane, but you'll be fine - at least these nuts aren't behind the wheel. read more

I'll be honest. I freaking LOVE the DART. I travel to Chicago pretty often for work and always pined the fact that no one that lives in the city has cars - not that I don't love cars, it's just that I'm pretty notorious for falling into troublesome situations with vehicles. Like, every vehicle I've ever had. So it's nice to know there's something I can fall back on. I'll give you a rundown of all the fantastic benefits of DART, but before I do, let me tell you this, public transport naysayers...the DART is not scary. I promise. I am not trained in Kung-Fu, nor do I have any magical or vampirical abilities to defend myself. Yet, I have NEVER been scared on the DART. More times than not, it's a bunch of people going to the same event you are, or a bunch of downtown business suit workers either coming to or from work. Terrifying, I know. So here are the best ways to utilize the DART: *If you work in Downtown (and/or go to any event at the Myerson, Arts District or West End)...take it. It's a lifesaver. The trains get a little full during morning/afternoon rush hour, but it's NOTHING compared to suffering through 75. Or paying for parking. Ew. *If you ever go to an event at the AAC...um...you KNOW parking is awful. Not only does it cost an arm and a leg, after you're all hyped up from the concert/game you just saw, you get to sit in a one-by-one line for 45 minutes just to get out of the parking lot. Terrible. *Anything in Fair Park/Cotton Bowl/Superpages...Ummm do you KNOW how much they charge for parking there? And Superpages? Forget it. That place gets packed and there are like two exits. No. Effing. Way. So, take the DART. Do it. If you're lucky enough to have a company that reimburses your monthly pass, try it for a month. For the first week you'll be a little hesitant, then you won't be able to live without it. Who wants to drive when I can get through a book a week just during my normal commute? read more

I've never had to rely on public transportation until I moved to Dallas... since I live way up north (McKinney) and my job is in Uptown my daily commute would be about an hour there and an hour home. (If less than that I would be surprised). My office is about to move to the heart of Downtown and parking fees are atrocious. But thank goodness for the DART! For these last six months, the rail has only been late once. If there's a bad storm, then debris or lack of electricity can shut the rail down. (Happened twice just in this month!) Overall the trains are comfortable, spacious, reliable, and safe. I pay $80 for the 31 day pass which is the best value. It's $5 to ride all day or $2.50 for a 2 hour pass. But if you rely heavily on the DART, there's a yearly pass for $800. I love the GoPass app where I can buy my tickets, outline routes, or even just check the DART arrivals and departures. I'm happy I can read or browse through my phone on the way to work than stress and curse in traffic. read more

I personally think DART is a great, fairly safe way to travel across DFW. I love utilizing it especially when the State Fair and events around downtown Dallas come around. It's cheap to get a roundtrip ticket and it will usually drop you off right at (if not super close to) your destination. They are always opening up new stops in various towns and locations. Dart rail is neat-o, I love it when it goes into the tunnels for the Cityplace stop! Light rail is pretty convenient if you're going to the Dallas Zoo, Downtown Dallas, the AAC, Mockingbird Station, or even Downtown Plano. Also their buses aren't too shabby, very air conditioned (a factor that I treasure especially here in Texas, remember school buses from back in the day?)! If you have been to San Jose, CA then you will know that Dart has a twin brother. It's name is the VTA, aka, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. They move alike, feel alike, and cost sorta alike. Dart felt a litlle faster, maybe a tad bit cleaner, and a little more modern. I enjoyed my short trip to the west elm. I was so happy to ride the little, yellow DART. I can't say anything bad about it, because riding dart saved a tree on that day...or at least that how I saw it. read more

I have to update, because I realized this is specifically the Light Rail. The light rail is fast, consistent, takes you directly downtown, has plenty of parking, it's clean.... The Light Rail rocks. The bus system, however, is more sketch and much less consistent. Because of that, you can hardly get anywhere in decent time using the DART system, unless you're just going downtown and you can drive to the light rail stations. read more

UGH, why can't we have such an expansive metro in austin?! I took the metro from rowlett tx, to downtown Dallas and then to north dallas to the zoo. Quick, clean and easy. $5 for an all day pass. $2.50 for a kid's all day pass. They enforce the fare here, saw two peeps get kicked off for no tickets. I'm sure there are some downsides to ppl that use this transportation all the time, but I didn't experience any of them! read more

I'm a huge fan of public transportation, so I was excited to see that Dallas offered a Light Rail to bring me home from The Music Hall at Fair Park to the West End. Fair Park Station is situated in an amazing spot, since it allows you to go to a show and avoid parking/cabs. The schedule is regular enough that you never have to wait more than half an hour (for me, it was less than 15 minutes) and that's later in the evening -- I boarded the train just before 11 PM. The ride between Fair Park and West End was super quick -- under 15 minutes, in fact -- and several of the stations are clustered very close together. It was a short walk back to my hotel and I was glad to have only paid $1.75 for the one-way ride. While they didn't check my ticket, I didn't want to take a chance and not buy a pass and I was delighted to help support local transit. Don't fear DART! It is your friend and it's great for the environment. read more

DART is remarkably clean and relatively inexpensive based on one day's use. But it is SLOW. We paid only $2.50 for the 'Reduced Rate Day Pass' for "Seniors" like us. We only used it one trip each way but could have used it all day, apparently. We boarded at DFW Airport and went to the West End station, the one nearest the 6th Floor Museum. The ride took an hour to go what the Boston MBTA trains take about 30 minutes (in snowless weather, of course.) to do. The return trip seems a little faster. If you plan to use it, plan ahead. But we do recommend it otherwise. read more

Clean and efficient! We were glad to discover and use this system to get from our hotel to the down town places of Dallas. My wife liked it to the Bay Area BART system, only cleaner. They have almost a honor system, in that, there are no turn-styles for entry. Just cameras around and the possibility of someone checking for a ticket. I bought a ticket, but no one ever checked. The stops really served us well for seeing Dallas on foot. We stopped for breakfast and then the JFK sites. We also visited Deep Elum using the trains. If I'm going to mosey around Dallas again, I would not hesitate to use the DART trains. read more

It was a very convenient way to get back downtown after a football game at the Cotton Bowl. We just got herded onto the train with the rest of the huge crowd leaving the state fair. We never even paid, never even figured out how to pay, weren't even sure if we needed to pay until we were already on board with the doors closed behind us. Sorry DART, we owe you one. It seemed pretty slow. Especially for the Oklahoma fan who had to pee really badly. Unfortunately, he couldn't quite make it to the first stop after leaving the fairgrounds, but luckily for him, I had an empty cup after finishing my lemonade. Dear DART, thank you for saving my little brother so much trouble today. For $4, he got to ride all the way down to Fairpark for the Red River Shootout and didn't have to park. He's never been to Dallas and loved that he didn't have to fight traffic or get lost looking for the fairgrounds. He also liked that the train took him on a tour of Dallas. He said that the DART on gameday was like a party bus. He got to the game in 30 minutes. He got back to me safely later that day on the train. It was way convenient for the both of us. read more

Weeeeee! You guys know I love some trains! I have been riding this since I was a boy and it's fun. It's great for people watching. The prices are flat and you can ride all day. It's not like this in major cities like Philadelphia where the ticket price varies by stop and it's only one way. Some complain that the system isn't expansive enough. While I understand the point, the city just isn't laid out like many other cities to evenly compare the two. It is great for a weekend when you just want to have some fun exploring town,and it's very easy to navigate. Everyone should give the DART rail a ride. read more

When DART first opened up, this was a bargain... it was cheaper to ride on the rail then to drive down there (especially if you had to pay for parking). However, the prices have increased and it's now cheaper for a family of four to just drive together in one car to go see a concert at the AAC or something of that sort. However, DART, as a whole is very clean compared to other public transportation lines across the country. From four stars to one. I broke my wrist, so I can't drive my big ole stick shift to and from the doc. I take the DART to the south section of town and its usually ok. BUT, my last ride wasn't....cool. A man got on at the west end, lil messed up, I'm not hatin - I like to get my drink on... but he got up while we were stopped at Union Station and pissed right out the door like he was at home. Then, he sits down, takes out some sunflower seeds and tosses the shells on the floor as he's eating them. I grew up in Philly riding the subway and the L trains and I wanted to believe the DART was better. The truth is, other then cops to check that you paid your fare, you're on your own... Your staff was a crew of incompetent, unprepared, ignorant, baboons that could care less that they were causing people to be three freaking hours late for work! I was at cityplace station, (waiting for over an hour on the next train, that DIDN'T even go where it should have) and I asked a DART employee "What kind of a job allows you to say 'whenever I get there, I get there?'" And she tells me "the kind of jobs people that take public transit work for". This was after the total disaster this morning all for a stabbing that happened four hours earlier at a location different from the station they shut down because of it. Over the last twenty years, the DART train expansion has boomed! From the first trains opening in 1996 until now, there has been vast improvement. I love that the trains go to DFW airport, which we have used for one of our trips. It did take a while but that is because everything is so spread out in Texas. The buses I think are still slower but they have gotten better. Overall, I love that DART has expanded the rails lines all across the city as well as into Irving and the mid cities with the TRE. read more

1. Poor train car set up. Seat setup didn't make much sense and train cars have a lot of unusable space. 2. Train cars also shake laterally quite violently. 3. Inefficient ticket validation system. Why have a print out card with a magnetic scanable bar and not use it to validate the ticket? I saw a girl get on the DART and try and hide from the ticket enforcement employee. The employee proceeded to let her ride for free but told her to get off at the next station. She got a free ride for about five stations before being caught. Riders are paying for ticket enforcement employees to not do their jobs. 4. After leaving DFW airport, the DART was late to every subsequent station. DART needs to take notes from metros from Asia. read more

It runs on time (mostly, unless it runs into a car or vice-versa), it takes you certain places, and it doesn't cost a lot. Sure, it has room for improvements, such as express lines and greater coverage, but it's not too bad, especially for Texas. Hop on the DART light rail at a station for $1.25 one-way (local) or $2.50 all day. You can also opt to purchase a calendar month-long pass for $40. The heart of the light rail system is downtown Dallas, of course, so if you plan on visiting the West End, the Art District, or even Mockingbird Station for the Angelika Theatre, you're set if you live relatively close to a station. (Check the system map for details.) But if you live in Carrollton, you'll have to stick with your ugly, gas-guzzling SUV instead for now. (There are plans to expand the system coverage by 2009.) read more

Dart is finally becoming somewhat helpful. It is a mix of more and more things being built around the stops and more and more lines being built and Dallas traffic getting worse and worse. It is best to take it downtown because parking can be a mess down there and it is also pretty decent to go to special events at Fair Park. It gets crowded at the commute times you would think it should, but more and more it is getting used on off times. I don't use Dart as an every day commuter but the times that I have used it, I have been pleasantly surprised with its efficiency, ease of use and cleanliness. I didn't think there would actually be a listing for DART, but there is! And now I can write a review! I've been riding the DART every Tues and Thur for the past 8 months to El Centro. Because 1) El Centro students ride FREE (If I had to pay, I probably wouldn't ride.) 2) The West End station is directly in front of the building 3) Saves me $3 for parking 4) No driving in annoying traffic down 75. So it has many a benefit for me. At peak times, the trains run every 5 minutes. And they're almost always on time. They're not on time or having a "momentary delay" when it's raining. If it's raining, add at least 10-15 minutes to your trip. Also, when riding it to special events, such as the State Fair or Greenville on St. Patty's Day, except to be crammed up in there with other people who had the same brilliant money saving idea. If I'm riding during rush hour in the AM and PM, I'm not afraid of who's gonna get on next. Still, you'll have people asking you for spare change. As a general rule, sit in one of the cars near the front. Put away any valuables. Don't stare at people. And give up your seat for the elderly, if they want it. read more

Probably the best public transportation option we have here in Texas. Granted, that's not saying *too* much, but Dallas Area Rapid Transit gets the job done. Interesting fact, it's actually the largest light rail system in the country. Has a large number of stops that run pretty far out into the Metroplex, and serves both the touristy parts of Downtown Dallas as well as a few of the suburbs. 5 bucks for a day pass, clean cars, and it seems like a lot of people use it, which is good. read more

I'm reviewing the entire DART mass transit system with this review, as it is a fully-functioning comprehensive system that can only be fully appreciated when all transit options are utilized. What to say about DART? It depends, really. The system is good if it takes you where you need to go. The further out of the downtown area you get, the less effective this system is. And that is understandable, as mass transit in every metro area is like that. The Dallas area has the pitfall of being spread out, and favoring a lot of single-family suburban homes spread out on half-acre lots. There are a few neighborhoods that are serviced by DART's on-call service, but those are few and far in between. Most of the time when I use DART I'm going from my beloved little city-state of Addison to downtown. The schedules for the buses and trains are relatively easy to read. Every transit center has a large system map showing where all the routes go, so you can plan your trip accordingly. I know there are people who are concerned about staying safe on DART, and especially on the buses. Now I will admit that you do run into some er... interesting people, however I have never felt that my life was in danger. Sure you get some homeless people asking for change or a cigarette or something, but that's about it. Here in Texas, where the car is king, it's surprising to find a relatively-successful mass transit system. Because for the price of a day pass I can go to almost anywhere in the greater Dallas area. Sure, it's going to take a little longer, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice to avoid the headache of driving and worrying about what will happen to my poor defenseless car parked in a scary lot somewhere. Please understand this about DART. It is a growing system, and will be for a long time. There are constantly evolving projects to expand the system and connect more neighborhoods. The more people that use DART, the more it can grow, and the more cars we can get off the roads. I think we all can get behind that. read more

It's a mixed bag. Like so many others have said, it's pretty good if you're going downtown. But what if you're going from Garland to Farmer's Branch? You either have to take the train all the way downtown and then way out again to reach your destination, or you have to meander about on the buses. How about a crosstown line? There are NO plans for one, unfortunately, and this makes the system unusable for a lot of people. And look at where "Love Field Station" is. Blocks and blocks away. I know there's a bus but anytime you have to transfer it's a pain. They tunneled under Mockingbird Lane and I don't know why they didn't put the station in that tunnel. A lot closer. Then there's the downtown thing. Currently you have all lines sharing the same track through downtown. That's bad for rail congestion and makes the train less viable to downtown commuters because there's only one string of stations. AND it's all above ground, which is the stupidest thing in the world. At grade trains can't be any longer than they are now because they'll block intersections when they stop. So it's kinda hard to add capacity now, isn't it? To make matters even worse, I've actually seen trains full of people stop at traffic signals to let four or five cars go through a downtown intersection. The system is okay, but it could have been a lot better had they tunneled downtown. They really need to add rails there anyway, and when they do they should spend the money and but them underground. I realize that doing so is costly, but this is an extremely long term investment. Safety? I've never had a concern about that. I live in the Cedars and that station serves the red and blue lines coming up from South Dallas. Yeah, you get some weird people, but quit crying about it. Violence on DART is very rare. I read one review on here and it said he would have given the rail four or five stars except his car got broken into at a Park and Ride. Well, tough. Take you stuff out of your car...this is common sense. And your car can and will get broken into at some point or another in Dallas no matter where you park it. Especially if you leave six thousand dollars of crap inside of it. May as well hang the Hope Diamond from your rearview mirror. I would have given DART rail by itself three stars in spite of its shortcomings, but it is supposedly integrated with the buses, and the buses are the worst I've ever ridden outside of LA and NYC. You can walk faster. read more

oh yes the DART train, not bad for such a large scale city. It connects me with every single place I want to go. Even takes you to DFW (Dallas International Airport). Only con is that it gets noisy when you try to wait for it to pass. Did not do so well with that when I was riding in my friends car with the windows down. That is not what matters the most. It is fast clean and really Tourist friendly Texan or not. Love the DART and love that it is trying and love that it seems to be recently taking off. My backing for this statement, nothing but antedotal stories and a couple of somewhat recent DART rides. It is packed at commuter times and although it doesn't work for my commute, I am 1000's times thankful that that many extra people are off the roads. It seems like for so many years the DART didn't have enough line for it to be used, but now I just hear about it more and more. read more

If you are headed to a different terminal at DFW other than Terminal A, DART can be a very slow and confusing option. The service to DFW terminates about a 5 minute walk from Terminal A. Once you've walked to Terminal A, you have a 2 free choices to get to other terminals: 1. Go through security here and then take the airport monorail to another terminal 2. Take the airport bus to another terminal, and then go through security A few problems with option 1: the security line is really long here, and there's no TSA pre-check line at this location. The problem with the option 2 bus is that it's really slow. The DART ticket machines are hard to use. I couldn't figure out how to use a credit card to pay for the $2.50 ticket, and then the machine ate a $5 of mine without giving me a ticket. If you're heading to (or coming from) any terminal at DFW other than terminal A, I recommend using a taxi or Uber. read more

I rode Dart for the first time this weekend, but just the rail line. It was a great way to get downtown to go to the International Motorcycle Show. We didn't have to worry about parking or driving. It seemed just as fast as driving down there. There were plenty of seats. I think if I rode regularly, I'd carry my MP3. No doubt I'll use Dart next time I need to go downtown. read more

While both are convenient, I prefer DART to the TRE. It's a bit cleaner and everything seems more up-to-date. Since I moved to Coppell about a year ago, I use the DART for all my events in Dallas (mainly at the AAC). Ticket system is really user-friendly and overall it's worth it to avoid traffic and parking fees. This is the transit system to use if you're on the Dallas side or traveling North/South. Trains are onTime, clean and zip right past traffic, so for that I give the system an "A". Unfortunately, Dallas doesn't yet seem to have moved beyond its past, in that the majority of riders are people of color and some very skirt looking folks. I rode the orange and blue lines, first at rush hour then at midday. I recently started a job in Houston and was disappointed to find that Houston only had one rail line that I couldn't use since I have to drive from Katy. Last year, I worked in downtown Dallas and LOVED taking the DART rail to and from work. With 85 miles of track, I could go from Plano to downtown to Irving, Carrollton, American Airlines Center, Fair Park, etc. One could even transfer to a TRE or DCTA train and go to Fort Worth or Denton respectively. While taking the train didn't really save time due to all the stops, it definitely saved me money since station parking is free, far less gas was wasted siting in traffic, and I didn't have to deal with the aggravation of the North Dallas tollway or highway 75 (which sucks even on weekends.) I'd listen to my co-workers talk about the traffic and I was really grateful that I didn't have to deal with it. Coming to Houston, I assumed that the area would have a more developed rail system than Dallas since Houston is the larger, more congested city. Sadly, I was wrong and Houstonians aren't as lucky. Driving to downtown from Katy takes 45 minutes minimum and 90 minutes back. Looks like I'll have one more thing to miss about Dallas and I'll have to make due with the METRO buses until a more practical rail system is built. So my basic message to Dallas residents is: 1) Enjoy and use the rail system that you have available to you. 2) Buy tickets if you're going to use the rail. Like any business, a big transportation system like DART requires money to operate, otherwise buses and trains dwindle and it's back to stop and go traffic! By the way, DART rail should add an east-west line to save people the agony of driving on or near 635! That would be glorious! read more
