I know that I'm going to sound like a snooty city person to locals, but they already know all they need to know about the only supermarket in town. This is for the "just passin' through" folks like me. It was August 29 of the year of the pandemic, and we were heading home after a camping trip. My boy was getting hungry, and restaurants with outdoor seating were scarce, so we decided that groceries were the best way to satisfy him. I masked up and went in alone. This was my first real encounter with small town scorn for public health. People in other small town businesses have looked like they resent the mask rules, but comply for the sake of the tourist trade. For example, I saw two mask scofflaws at the supermarket in Forks. (And yes, we even see scofflaws in the city occasionally.) But here, the place was pretty busy, and maybe a quarter of the customers were unmasked. Most of those tempting the virus to hasten their demise looked old, or infirm, or depressed -- but they were also endangering people who still have a reason to live. Although I was trying to shop quickly, I didn't know my way around the store, and I had to search to find a decent, no-preparation snack for my boy. During the search, I found one irresistible impulse purchase: a huge jar of raw honey for a respectable price. The treats at the in-store bakery were pretty picked over by 4:30 pm, so I settled for a red velvet roll cake, for about what I'd expect to pay in the city. I took my purchases to the one open cashier. (They were short-handed; I heard someone apologizing about that.) She was wearing a mask, but it only covered her mouth. I'm glad there was a plastic shield, and room for me to back away from the cashier through most of the transaction. I paid with a card, and the card machine was mercifully quick. Back in the parking lot, I showed my wife and our boy the cake. (The honey will be a surprise for later.) It calmed his hunger, and my wife and I indulged too. But it wasn't something I'd highly recommend. It wasn't until my wife asked that I read the ingredients list, and I think it was mostly sugar, with some cooking oil, some flour, and some dairy ingredients in the frosting (which was delicious). We'll probably finish the leftover cake, mostly because we hate to waste food. My two-star "Meh, I've experienced better" is partly a reaction to the mask scofflaws. And I suppose it's not fair to count inconsiderate customers against them. But a cashier showing her nose? Not good. But it's not just the pandemic. The bakery shelf was short enough of items that I settled for the cake, which was disappointing. I didn't experience the employee friendliness mentioned in other reviews. It's a typical smalltown IGA. Friendly people, a decent selection, and okay prices. Definitely not as low as a supermarket in arlington I would not do all my food shopping here, but it's okay for milk, eggs, bread, vegetables, and other food products when it doesn't make sense to drive to Arlington or Marysville. read more

Overall, the service at IGA has been ok. The cashiers aren't particularly helpful or friendly, but they get you through the line. During covid-19, they have been exceptionally resistant to safety protocols though. They don't want to wear masks, or choose to wear mesh ones. They aren't sanitizing regularly or between customers, so I have tried to avoid shopping there unless I really needed something. If you really need something when you're in town, it's an acceptable place to shop. read more

I really want to support our local businesses in this tiny and economically depressed town, especially during COVID, but I'm deeply disappointed in Darrington IGA's absolute refusal to comply with the mask mandate during the entire pandemic. It is the only grocery store in town, the next closest one being 30 miles away, and it is, frankly, a dangerous place to go. Most customers don't wear masks (and they scoff openly at you when you do). The employees grudgingly wear ill-fitting masks that usually don't cover their noses, and they remove them entirely anytime they feel like it. The other day a cashier was wearing her mask under her chin and I asked her to put it on before I went through her line. She huffed and rolled her eyes and put it on - under her nose. I asked her to cover her nose and she rolled her eyes so hard I thought they were going to fall out. Excellent customer service, guys, way to make people feel welcome during a global health emergency. (Guess what? we ALL hate wearing masks, but us grownups know they are necessary and do the right thing anyway). I won't go in again until I, at least, am fully vaxed. The lack of a mask enforcement policy makes it next to impossible to shop at Darrington IGA if you are a sane and sensible person. And oh - Darrington IGA received a coronavirus bailout loan for $133,600 - guess they are willing to take the cheap money anyway. read more

Nice to see the business's here are rebounding and doing well from the Oso landslide as this town was pretty much cut off from the I-5 side of the state. This store has friendly employees and the prices though, are pretty much what you expect to pay in a small town. Hope all in the HWY 530 stretch from Arlington and Darrington continue to pull through this disaster! read more

Living in this town, I absolutely love this grocery store. The staff is unbelievably friendly. You always feel like your catching up with an old friend when you shop there. They have a great deli and meat selection. The store is limited on options, which Is totally understandable for such an out of the way small town grocer. So obviously the prices are a little higher, but they more than make up for it with excellent sales and superior hospitality! I hope they continue to be successful for decades to come! read more

Visited: July 1, 2017 We stopped here when we found ourselves in need of a few camping essentials. They have a great selection of both baby and pet essentials. They also have a deli which offers fresh made sandwiches. I heard from our camp host that the pastrami was particularly tasty. The employees were very friendly and helpful. I was surprised to find that they had a great selection of both wine and beer. read more

Great service, friendly staff, good gourmet coffee for really cheap at the deli, good selection of food in the store, they sell recreation passes. Centrally located in the middle of town and open until 8 pm week nights. Anything you mean get need visiting like were you will find here including a good selection of seasonal items. Update: we went here 4 or 5 times and every time employees where friendly and welcoming. Nice small town grocer. read more

The people at this store are always nice. The selection is limited (but you are in Darrington, what do you expect), the prices are outrageous ($4.77 for 8 oz of cream cheese???), but today when I was in there the produce I bought rang up wrong (both things I bought rang up different than the posted price, one too high, by $.50/lb and one too low by $.30/lb). Watch the pricing that rings up and only go here when you really need something and the savings in gas makes up for the savings you would get if you bought in town (i.e. Arlington or Marysville). read more

5 stars for convenience and consistently friendly service. Though we only visit when passing through to our campsite in the summer months, we always find some last minute thing we forgot and have to stop in to grab... even if it's just a snack for the rest of the ride. Next time we'll steer clear of the fish counter though since food poisoning while camping really frickin' sucks. read more
