They were also very informative on aftercare which I really appreciated as I got my first tattoo here. The vibe of the shop is great tons of super cool artwork along the walls. Well I didn't know coming back to have a tattoo fixed was going to be an issue. I explained to the cashier that I understood that finger tattoos fade but the fact that you can't tell what the tattoo is at all was the issue. I didn't expect that receptionist to be defensive as well. I never said that tattoo artist was bad at all but that's what was implied by the receptionist. I came into dark horse with my design and Cat made the pattern more intricate. She was very helpful in explaining the process on how long it would take, how many and what sized needles she would be using. Her pricing is really great with how much detail she puts in her work. My piece took a total of 4 hrs and 15 min, split into two sessions. She gets booked pretty fast and for good reason! I normally don't post reviews but felt it was necessary this time. I've been looking for a good place to get tattooed for years. I've been to a few places in Richmond / Chesterfield and nobody has been able to come close to John at Dark Horse. Now mind you, I have 16 tattoos so I've been to quite a few places. John is great! I'm actually fairly new to the area and was recommended by SEVERAL people to John. After seeing his insane work on my friends I was very impressed. Hesitant about trying yet another tattoo artist I was unfamiliar with, I made the appointment anyway and was BLOWN away. I decided to get roman numerals of my grandfathers passing on my neck. It didn't hurt almost at all (weird because I thought that would be the worst place to get tatted), and I was in the tattoo chair for maybe 10-15 minutes. Quickest and most painless tattoo ever. Not to mention the quality was amazing! Lines are super clean! Although I have quite a few tatts, he still went over aftercare with me instead of assuming I just know what to do (which I appreciate because I forget). He also went into detail about needing to wash my sheets and things before sleep because of the placement of my tattoo being a little more susceptible to getting infected. From start to finish, I was very impressed with this experience. He estimated $180-200 for this tatt and he said because how easy it was to tatt, he only charged $180. If you are unfamiliar with this shop, you go online and request an artist and submit what you want to get. After they call you to confirm and set up an appointment, they get a $50 deposit. The only thing that I could say would be that it did take them a while to get back to me after I initially submitted my request online. Then my appointment was 3-4 weeks out. But that's nothing against them, they seem to be quite busy. I also have a banker type schedule so I'm sure that didn't help. With tattoos I've figured out that quality comes before anything. If you're rushing to get a tattoo immediately and they don't have any immediate openings. Wait. It's well worth it. Tattoos are forever. Thanks John! read more

They do good work at this place. Kat is a good artist but not a great conversationalist and can come off as arrogant at times. The staff is very helpful and Steve is a great guy and the face of DHT. The only thing I really don't care for is their method of pricing. The artist essentially comes up with the price for the work and it can vary from person to person that comes in. They do stand behind their work, so if something needs to be touched up, they are more than willing to go and touch it up. If not knowing if you're getting the same price as someone else doesn't bother you, then I would recommend this place as they do good work. read more

I had a super experience at Dark Horse. I called to make a consultation appointment and was told just to come on in any time before 7 p.m. I was there in 15 minutes & talked to Kat. She was very nice and personable and told me with the style of my tattoo I'd be better off with Jon, who happened to be right there. I talked to Jon and explained the changes I wanted on the image and he really listened to what I was saying. (ok and he called me "sweetie, which I totally love). I paid my deposit, made an appointment for the next week and went on my merry way. The day before the appointment Steve called to remind me of my appointment (I've NEVER had a tattoo place do that - nice touch, y'all) and then Jon called to let me know he had my drawing complete and that I would love it. he was right. the drawing was amazing, and proved he was listening to what I wanted. Jon not only drew up a great image, he has a great touch and the tattoo turned out great, and was over way before I thought it would be. Jon explained after care (although this wasn't my 1st tattoo, so I didn't need too much help in that vein) he also told me to come back (within 90 days) if I need any touch ups, which I would expect from a good tattoo place. The shop was VERY clean, and I like the way it's set up (individual rooms, but the walls don't go all the way to the ceiling so you can kind of hear what else is going on in the shop). After much research and referral, I decided to visit Dark Horse Tattoo for my first tattoo. I've wanted my particular artwork for about five years and was extremely nervous about finding someone to do it. Jon was my artist, and he did a great job. During my first visit, he was friendly and listened as I explained what I wanted done (as i had made the trip unexpectedly and didn't have my drawing with me)...he called me two days later with finished artwork. I went back up to the shop and he had drawn exactly what I had wanted. They didn't have anyone else scheduled, so I went ahead and got my work done right then. As it was my first tattoo, I was nervous, but Jon was very reassuring and I quickly got over my fears. I was done in less than an hour. My tattoo was reasonably priced and I'm looking forward to going back for my next piece. About the atmosphere - The shop is nicely decorated, the "stock" options are nicely displayed, and there is a lot of room to converse with your artist or friends while you wait. When I went there the first time, the employees were all sitting in the front room. As I said, Jon was very nice. Steven, the piercer, was knowledgeable and talkative - in a good way. Kat was sitting there, and while she wasn't my artist, she is the shop owner (as far as I know) and was not very friendly...I looked at her work before I went there and she seems like a fabulous artist, but she needs to work on her customer service a tad. read more

Best tattoo parlor we've ever visited! My husband was in need of a cover-up, and Cat was the one and only artist we've spoken with that seemed confident in doing something over his super-detailed original piece. Her sketch was so cool, and she was quick in drawing it up for us. He sat in her chair for about 5 hours, as she put the most beautiful piece on his arm. She was friendly, confident, and an absolute amazing artist! We are more than pleased with the piece she tattooed on my husband, and plan to have future work done with her. Disappointed. Called a few months back and discussed a tattoo, deposit required, etc. Finally went in Sunday to put down a deposit, chatted with Steve a bit (nice guy!), and left a note with info for the artist to review. Was told there was time that evening around 7 to talk with her and possibly get the work done. Deposit? No, don't worry about the deposit yet until you chat about the design... left my number, said they'd call because time might free up before then. Fine. Waited and didn't get a call until after 8. So during the phone call we schedule for Wednesday at 3 pm. I'm 10 minutes early and find out someone else is booked at 3 pm. Did I pay a deposit? I'm asked... No, I could have done that Sunday but was told to wait. Maybe come back after 5... Seriously? Not the best first impression when going for your first tat. I have 4 designs of my own but this was that first impression to see how you like the artist. My daughter liked her work, but I'm just not feeling the love. read more

I went in to get my nose pierced last night. Got there around 8pm, and I didn't have to wait long. Steve (the piercer) is so friendly. Everything was really clean and he made it fast and easy. Also received very thorough after care instructions, as well as phone and email contact info in case I have any problems or questions. They even sell the sterile saline right there in the shop to make after care easy for you. I'm not sure who works the front desk (never introduced herself), but she was fine as well (not super friendly, but not rude, either). I can't speak to the tattoo side of the shop since I've never gotten any there.. but if you're looking for a great, clean piercing place, this is it! I drove up from the Cosner's Corner/Lee's Parke area of Fredericksburg just to go there. Worth the drive in my opinion. I've only ever gotten a nose and ear piercing when I was a kid, so I'm not sure if they're "expensive" or not, but my nostril stud was $50. read more

I got my first tattoo from Dark Horse tonight, and let me just say that they were amazing! This was a tattoo I've wanted for 7 years and have been too scared to actually get it done. Steve was my artist and he talked to me about anything and everything under the sun to keep me distracted while he worked. Everyone there was extremely nice and kept me laughing through the pain. (I don't take pain well.) I've heard horror stories about other tattoo shops in the area having mean or rude artists and can honestly say that the employees at Dark Horse are definitely not like that. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a tattoo. The private rooms were a nice feature and I loved that they set up the equipment in front of me so that I knew it was sanitary.
