    Fishing and boating area.

I was not expecting nearly what I found at this incredible state forest park located in Goshen. The layout is perfect for fishing, boating, swimming, camping and hiking, I am told that there is skating during the winter months as well. The lake is small almost 2 miles straight across and back but traversing the perimeter would take and 1.5 hrs by canoe or kayak. There are pavilions for larger parties and bathrooms in the common area as well as porta potties conveniently located throughout the area. I was taken with the cleanliness and absolute pristine beauty of this spot and hope to kayak the lake very soon.

This weekend as we were passing through the area we decided to stop in at the DAR State Forest to take a quick hike and enjoy the scenery. The park itself was phenomenal and since it is still before the peak season, the park was fairly empty, and it was great to just walk around and enjoy the sounds of nature. The cool thing about this park was the fact that the lake itself has a few small docks that are accessible to the public. This was nice because it allowed us to take some nice pictures. The other great park of our trip was sitting at their benches listening to the stream flow into the lake while soaking up the sun. The park itself was well maintained,] and the hiking trails here are really enjoyable.

This is a child who decided climbing in without parents around be a great idea. My view from site 21.

Always clean and friendly atmosphere from the park rangers. The bathrooms are as clean and lifeguards always vigilant.

A pretty hike, but impossible to find the trails -- there's NO trail markers! Please fix this!

This year they are going to be rebuilding the dam at the end of the lake, so that should be worth exploring next year. Last year, we learned how to sail, which was a real treat. We were in the correct season to get to be able to pick fresh wild blueberries from our kayaks!! We made a great syrup with them, and had it over ice cream...yummmm. ====================================================== In response to the person that has trouble with stairs: I think all the cabins have some amount of stairs, the white one has the fewest (maybe one?). In order to get down to the lake, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE ANY STAIRS. My mother-in-law has bad hips, and she doesn't use the stairs. All you have to do is either go around the house to the right, or walk all the way to the left in front of the green cabin, and there are NO STAIRS. The lawn is very gradually sloped on both of those paths. You can even get to the lake by walking directly in front of their porch...without stairs. Look at picture number two (that I took years ago), there are NO STAIRS under the flag on the left OR near the small red tree on on the right. The stairs mentioned are directly in the center of the picture under the arch.

We swam, kayaked, grilled every night, played with our dog (yes, they are extremely dog friendly) and just relaxed by the lake and in our cozy cottage. It's close to so many great places to visit and enjoy (Northampton, the Berkshires, DAR State forest), yet far enough away to indulge in a little pastoral solitude. We can't wait to return!

When you're carrying beach chairs, a beach bag and water bottles on a hot day, it's not a fun walk. When we got to the lake, there were only three cars in the parking lot. They rake some of the weeds in the designated swimming area, but not all, so it can be very gross to walk on (which i don't really mind, but it can be yucky). They used to have a cute little shack that served food, but that has also closed (i also believe this went to the funding and upkeep which is why it has gone downhill other than the parking). It's unguarded now, but i can understand that as i am a lifeguard and know that we have a shortage of lifeguards right now. I don't know the laws of boating there, but be careful going beyond the designated swimming area because the boaters really like to go close (which can also be annoying when they're coming one after the other). So the closest parking area is basically a mile away, and it has little to no sidewalk the whole time. So it's very unsafe if you have children, especially if they have any type of disorder or handicap. I wish they would solve the parking problem, but it's been 2 years now so i doubt they will. For a town that gets a lot of traffic from tourism, they seem to be trying very hard to keep people out, which is sad.
