Hoo boy, am I excited to know about this place! It's hard to screw up a cheese steak, right? They're all good, so any place that makes one NOTICABLY better than everywhere else is, to me, a big deal. I'll have to try it a few more times, but Dar's is immediately in my top tier (which includes Tony Luke's, among others), and is almost definitely my favorite within ~20 minutes of where I live. Good bread, good whiz, good everything. Everyone was really nice, the food was ready really quickly, and... what's that? A vegan option! I had it, and it's quite good for what it is (I'm accruing a mental list of imitation meat options that I like... BK's Impossible Whopper, Dunkin' Donuts' & Wawa's Beyond Sausage, Asian stir fries...), but obviously pales in comparison to the regular one. Oh, also, despite the containers in the pictures looking like styrofoam, they aren't! Always appreciated. I'm eagerly awaiting going back so I can try the Pizza and Buffalo varieties. One suggestion for you, Dar's: if you can get some soda fountain drinks (they currently have a fridge full of Pepsi-branded bottles... which is fine), that will completely put you over-the-top, in my book! To be honest, when I saw the sign "World's Best Cheesesteak", I was immediately dubious about the whole place. But I noticed that they had zeppoles (more on that later), so that got me to give it a try. I picked a Saturday afternoon and went in for a cheesesteak with provolone and some zeppoles. The place is no frills - strictly an order and pick-up place, not a lot of room to sit. Wasn't a problem for me because I was planning on taking it home anyway. So, I got the steak and went home. It smelled delicious in the car, which is a good sign. But the zeppoles smelled even better so I had to cheat and try one of those in the car - and they brought me right back to my visits to north jersey when I was introduced to this delectable treat. For the unfamiliar, zeppoles are balls of dough that are fried and then coated in sugar - supremely unhealthy but delicious when done right. And these were - perfectly cooked and coated in sugar that melts onto the dough. Great for me, but they were a bit messy. Once I got home, it was time to try the cheesesteak - it was meaty and the flavor was excellent. These were the best cheesesteaks I've had this side of the river, and hold their own with the best that Philly has to offer. The cheese wasn't as sharp as I would have liked but it was still tasty. The bread blended perfectly with the meat/cheese combo and provided a delicious complement to the sweet treats. A second visit confirmed that the first time wasn't a fluke - these are some really tasty cheesesteaks, definitely the best in the area. I haven't had a chance to try out their chicken cheesesteaks but I'm planning on taking that one this weekend. Highlights: good bread, plentiful and flavorful meat. Best cheesesteaks by far! And this is coming from someone who is from Philly. Steak is tender and juicy. Seeded Amoroso buns toasted and scooped out so it's light and airy and filled with that tender meat and cheese. We add hot cherry peppers and order it with whiz. I was told the mushroom steak is amazing so that'll be on our list to try soon! So happy for the consistency with quality and portion. Service is great guys are always friendly. Multiple issues...I ordered a side of buffalo sauce and when I picked up my order I asked to make sure the sauce was there...I got home to find out it was not. I called and was told that I would be refunded the cost of the buffalo sauce- no other accommodations were made. Much hyped and anticipated new steak place. We went today and realizing they just opened, I'll give them a pass on the phones not working. And also a pass on not having the advertised seeded rolls. The staff was quite frantic trying to get orders and customers straight. And the payment station automatically starts the tip suggestion at 18% and it goes up from there. Hopefully these are all issues they can overcome. Now the food- don't believe the pictures on the website. The sandwiches we ordered were more bread than meat. The meat itself was bland and had the occasional chunks of chewy gristle. The fried onions were almost impossible to find and were extremely small pieces. Cheese, what there was, was hidden under the meat. The lettuce on the hoagie was no more than a tablespoon on the entire sandwich. The tomatoes were about 1 1/2" in diameter so not sure what kind they were, but there were 2 small discs on one half of the sandwich and none on the other. On the positive side, the veggie steak had a mushroom like taste and was very passable. Overall- low marks. But I will give it a second chance to allow for start up issues. read more

Whiz is house-made and of a thinner consistency (though tasty). Fries and zeppoli (!) as hot sides. Herr's chips, bottled Pepsi products round things out. My only disappointment has been the packaging. Sandwiches come in biodegradable boxes which don't seem to retain moisture or heat very well-- I get why they've chosen this, but can't help but think their product would keep better in wax paper or foil wrap.
