My girlfriend and I got takeout on a Saturday night; she got the lamb gyro and I got a regular cheesesteak. World's best cheesesteak? Probably not. Came here after the eagles parade because it had great reviews and gluten free bread. While walking in, we were greeted with the person behind the counter asking us what we wanted before we were fully in the door. Seemed like we were being rushed and didn't let us get a grasp of what we wanted as it was our first time there. Also, I asked for hot peppers and fried onions and got mushrooms instead of hot peppers. The cheesesteak itself was pretty good. The steak and wiz was good but the bread was too soft. It made everything kind of feel like mush and didn't hold it together very well. One thing about my reviews is that they are 100% truthful and genuine. Whether I give a 5 stars or a rare 1 star I honestly believe it. Now this one might hurt. And that's because they have the audacity to display "World's Best Cheesesteak" in their logo. It's the first thing you notice when you grab the handle to their door. My question to them is: in what world is your cheesesteak the best? Because it certainly isn't the one I live in. Do you remember in Elf when Buddy was so excited because the place had "World's Best Coffee" on their door? And then he blindfolds his date and has her guess what it is only for her to say "it tastes like a crappy cup of coffee." Well, I had the crappy cheesesteak equivalent. Their cheesesteak is woefully, barely average. It's what I've had a million times at your regular pizza takeout joint. But this isn't a pizza takeout joint. It's a place that has Steaks in its name and you better be pretty damn good at serving exactly those. When you're not, and you double down and have the balls to put "World Best" in your logo you better back it up. Around Philly we love the cheesesteak lists even though it's been done to death. This isn't showing up on a Top 10, 25 or even 50. Now let me tell you why I think this. Let's start with the bread. I appreciate that they serve seeded and non-seeded. Some people go one way or the other and stand by it like their political party. Others, like myself, are more moderate and can go either way but I usually lean seeded. Usually, when you get seeded it's a little on the harder side. Well, this one was anything but. It was soft and chewy and I don't think I've ever had a soft seeded roll before. On their website, they describe their rolls but curiously omit the bakery it's from-- it's stated that the bread comes from "a local bakery." I find this odd because most of the time (if you're proud of where you're getting your stuff) you'll give a nod to where it comes from. The steak was finely chopped and just had something lacking. One word I'd use to describe it would be "meh." The fried onions gave it the only real taste to the entire sandwich. As for the cheese, they also serve the trendy cooper sharp. I thought there could be a little more mixed in. Was there anything good about what I got? Yes. The fries were pretty good but they shouldn't be the best part of a cheesesteak and fries meal at a Cheesesteak shop. Been going here for a long time to get the seitan cheesesteak hoagies with my husband after my nail appointment's. They use to be sooooooo good, to the point I've recommended friends and family who started frequenting there. The second to the last time we went they weren't as good as the previous time. Still things happen perhaps it was just an off day, maybe they were training someone new or whatever. We like them so much we still were willing to try again. We ended up going this Saturday and the sandwiches were terrible. The seitan actually tasted different and it was a lot lighter in color than normal. There are other places we get food from that use different types of seitan one being a kind of chicken tasting one, where others may use one that tastes more like beef. Usually the ones here taste beefy but this time it tasted and looked more like the chicken one. So much so we called to inquire. They claim it's the same product they've been using for years. Personally I don't believe it. I don't know if they switched or if they get it from a vendor who switched it but the seitan cheesesteak just does not taste the same as it use too. We were extremely disappointed on top of the fact that they also weren't made how we asked. Real bummer. read more

I've heard the kid in town for cheesesteaks is Dars but parking is kinda a problem there and no Seats so you just kind of have to be up for 3rd party delivery or picking it up on your own. Gasp---$30 for a Philly Dilly and I think I got a side from the 3rd party delivery. Those are the only bad points. If you are assessing / rating an establishment solely on food, Dar's gets a resounding 5, however I look at the whole picture, unfortunately (many might find this petty) the salt and pepper shakers were sticky and slimy, which makes me wonder about what cannot be seen in the kitchen. This seems like a small detail, but it detracted from the overall experience. I would return to Dar's as the food was very good. I had just returned from an international trip, my first since COVID, and I was exhausted from jet lag and the stress of a fast-paced business trip. Grateful that my sister gave me a ride from the airport, so I treated her to lunch here. Glad we did! As you can see in photos showing prices, be prepared to pay $10 and up for a cheesesteak, but they are quite hefty and generous with meat (wish they were a bit more with the cheese, but that's me - I love cheeeeeese). Dar's utilizes the take out only model. Her shop is small with no seating. Although there is a table and chairs out front for when the weather is nice. Place your order via phone and it's usually ready within 20 mins, even on a Friday night! You have your choice of protein - steak, chicken, Seitan, roll - seeded, plain or GF baguette, and cheese - American, provolone, whiz, or vegan. There are a couple of interesting choices on the menu - including the Hot Chester (hot Cheetos anyone?) and Philly Dilly (pickles and whiz). My go to order is steak w/American cheese/onions on a seeded roll and it did not disappoint! Plenty of chopped ribeye piled high onto a freshly baked roll with the cheese and onion mixed throughout. It's a very great cheesesteak. In fact, I've ordered a couple of times now just to make sure... So, is it the best? My reporting does not agree with such a claim, but hey, it's a damn good cheesesteak and a great alternative to driving over the bridge into the home of sandwich. Oh yum!! I can only speak for the vegan cheesesteaks and they were super delish and definitely a 5!! The consistency is what you would expect of chopped meat. The roll was seeded and crispy immediately after purchase. I opted for mushrooms as a toppings and the meaty portobellos were given generously! The Sammy is massive so it's definitely shareable or enough for two sittings. Our crew also ordered regular cheesesteaks some with fried onions and others with mushrooms as well, and they were said to be packed with meat but the roll got a soggy after a long drive before devouring. We didn't eat there but we got to go. I've eaten a lot of cheesesteaks. A lot! Gourmet cheesesteaks to just plain lunch truck steaks. I will say this. I can't think of a better cheese steak that I have ever eaten including LILO's and donkeys even though I don't think donkeys compares with a regular cheesesteak. The meat was perfect the amount of cheese was perfect. The fried onions and cherry peppers I requested were also perfect. I got the beef Cheesesteak with Dar made Wiz, fried onions and portobello mushrooms. The sign out front said; World's Best Cheesesteaks. If you follow me you know that high expectations usually don't work out. I did like the recycled cardboard container. Saving the Earth while maintaining the Integrity of the roll. When I opened the container the cheesesteak looked a little small. When I picked a piece of meat off the cheesesteak it was very tender and flavorful. The seeded row looked very good but we had a major roll blowout. I don't know what's going on with the Whiz but it was way too runny for my liking. I wish it was thicker and stuck to the meat.
