Having been a fan of the other restaurants at Mousai and Garza Blanca, we were SUPER EXCITED to return to Mousai to try this new restaurant which only opened three weeks ago.
In summary, we had an amazing dining experience at Dao, and even went back a couple of times before we left! Ha! The food, the atmosphere, but notably the service made this a five star experience, and made this restaurant my favorite here (I may even like it more than Hiroshi's!) And that is saying something, which you know if you have ever stayed at the Mousai.
We were welcomed so warmly each time we went back. Our servers Ivan (1st and 3rd nite) and Vicente (2nd nite) treated us like royalty. Correction everyone provides the best, service, treating us like old friends. Ivan recalled us from our visit to Mousai last year. "Welcome home!" He was so enthusiastic, helpful and attentive - a huge part of our dining experience. You could tell he felt so proud of the restaurant, of how well it was doing, very popular - many reservations, and the food.
The chief came out last night introduce himself. So nice.
I'm Chinese-American so I was already familiar with most of the dishes on the menu, and had a good idea of what my Italian-Puerto Rican boyfriend would like as well...
We ordered a massive amount of food each time we've gone and on our first visit would have kept on ordering if the restaurant wasn't closing lol.... Nick's favorites were the gyoza (10) dumplings, the shu mei (steamed pork dumplings) (10+), I also thought the shrimp crispy rolls (10) were very delicious. They have Szechuan oil on the table which should be mixed with the soy sauce, for a very nice dipping sauce.
The egg white fried rice was good (I a 9, Nick a 8); the fish ball and crab cake noodle soup (a solid 8) the broth was very tasty.
For dessert my bf ordered the creme brûlée which he really liked (8+); he may have rated it higher, he has more of a sweet tooth than I do. Our favorite dessert was the banana lychee rolls with coconut ice cream. (10) That was a suggestion of our server Vicente, which was a great call.
We both loved the pork and shrimp won ton soup, the broth is so tasty! (10+) which we got our second time there.
My favorite dish was the HOR FUN (I know them as "chow fun") noodles and we've ordered that each of the three times we've gone. These noodles are large flat rice noodles, which here are made fresh daily. This has been been my favorite comfort food for years (for a few years a picture of chow fun noodles was my background on my Facebook page lol) - we'd go late night while we were studying for finals while in college for a chow fun run in Chinatown. Anyway, I digress.... The menu at Dao has a little nice description of the "Chef's Hor Fun Noodles" is a traditional rice flat noodle said to have originated from the town of Guonghou, China ....(actually where my ancestors were from). You can get the hor fun noodles with chicken, beef, vegetable or bbq pork. I got the beef, which is what I usually get at the Chinese restaurants at home.
They have a creative drink menu, we tried we got three of the specialty drinks, but I think the way to go is get a Cadillac margarita. Yummy! They bring a cart to your table and do the / make the margarita/ cocktail there at your table.
The first time I went, I opted to just go with a dry sparkling wine, which I felt went nicely with the complexity of the flavors in our dishes. My bf got a nice red wine. Both our glasses were always kept full.... Thank you Ivan! So I think we'd recommend either a Cadillac margarita or wine / sparking wine. I'm have g a Cadillac margarita as I edit this review.
We liked being offered lemon, cucumber, strawberries for our sparkling water. Nice touch.
The restaurant itself is beautiful, modern, with gorgeous marble floors. The marble floors is a plus..... and a minus honestly. The 1st night we were there, there seemed to be a lot of people celebrating birthdays, lots of singing happy birthday so it kinda got loud. The price for beauty....
Oh yeah we couldn't wait to go back and yeah, like I said we went back three times this trip. Yesterday, we hit Hiroshi's first for "Happy Hour" sushi and Hiroshi martini, and then went to Dan for "dinner." OINK!
Yeah the first and second time we went we really were having such a nice time we closed the restaurant down! They offered to make a dish for us for us take it to go, which was sweet. We said, "Nah, that will just give us another reason to come back tomorrow." Which we did! :) read more
