I haven't been to a store like this myself to see the doctor for an assessment to better my health. In fact, it's been a very, very long time since I've drank those type of Chinese medicinal herbs. It's always been my parents and grandparents combining their own ingredients that was taught to them from their parents and grandparents or other family members, and possibly they were taught by older generations too. When I was a kid, I dreaded drinking that bitter, thick, black concoction. I already felt sick, the smell and taste of it makes even feel worse!! Why? Why? Why?! I made a deal with my parents and grandparents to drink it in one gulp only if I can have a candy--a candy chaser lol. Well, I'm not a kid now (on the outside, at least), so I don't think I need one now? I was recommended Tak Wah Tong from a client. She used it for her sickness. I normally rely on Western medicine to get the job done for quick relief and quick healing, but Western medicines doesn't improve your health from the inside as Traditional Chinese medicine. Tak Wah Tong is located in the Chinatown Cultural Plaza among Beretania. It's in the inner part of the plaza, next to the big stage, and near Won Kee and Legend Seafood restaurants. You'll be greeted by a kind elder gentleman and lady. They both can speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and very understandable English. You explain your issues and health concerns to the doctor, and he will check and feel your pulse on both your wrists. Then he will write up his ingredients list to make your herbal drink. After that, they both go to work, and gather and weigh all your ingredients. I have really no idea on the cost as I've never did this. My family usually just buys the whole bags and prepare at home. I did the 5-day plan and that ran me $60 even. Seems okay. They only accept Cash or Check, no credit or debit cards. No need appointment. The inside of the store is clean and well-lit. I'm surprised there was no giant apothecary cabinet, but everything was in jars and containers along the wall and scattered here and there. Overall, I do strongly believe in Traditional Chinese medicine. Whenever I was sick, and Western medicine fails, Chinese medicine always heals me. Western medicine gets straight to the point for quick relief, and Chinese medicine heals within and the hidden, underlying issue. I'm only day three of my medicine, but hopefully it'll work in the long run.

Dr. Mei-Lin is amazing!…read more In our quest for parenthood, I stumbled upon Maunakea Acupuncture. My Obgyn said to just continue trying and come back in a year if nothing happens. Me (being my impatient self) wanted to explore other possibilities. I'm still young and relatively healthy, so I was looking for a naturopathic option. She did an extensive consultation and walked me through the plan before we started acupuncture. She asked about things like my diet, lifestyle, and gave me great advice on what I should/shouldn't do. The next appointment was scheduled for acupuncture. I'm not sure if it was the timing or the stars just aligned. I immediately got pregnant after the first session! A pregnancy test confirmed it a month later on Father's Day. I saw her religiously during the first trimester and sparingly throughout my pregnancy. Based off my pulse, she was able to identify the baby's gender and confirmed we're having a boy! Now, a year later, we have a healthy and happy baby boy! I still see her once a month post partum to help my body heal. Thank you Dr. Mei-Lin! PS She also helped fix my reoccurring knee and ankle pains Thanks for reading my reviews! Chinese medicine... an alternative/supplement to Western medicine???…read more When I was a small kid, my popo (Chinese grandmother) used to give us all kinds of Chinese medicine. *There were topical ointments like Tiger Balm, bok fa yow (white flower oil), and hoong fa yow (red flower oil) that heated up the skin and probably were good for circulation, muscle aches, and congestion. *There were liquids made out of alcohol - yok jow. It seemed like leaves and twigs were soaking in the bottle to make a brown liquid. Popo would rub our bruises with it. OUCH! *There were potions that she would boil - they sure were pungent and tasted horrible. I don't remember the purpose for drinking this. *There were po chai pills that looked like little metallic balls. We'd swallow the contents of the whole container and our tummy aches would go away! Later, I heard that the pills contained lead...lol... and were discontinued! After a few rounds of these "treatments", I learned to not complain to Popo because I didn't want to go through this torture...haha! Her remedies were questionable to me! In more recent times, when my dad had cancer, he tried everything - chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, reiki, and Chinese medicine. He would boil packets of herbs from this Ding Hong Tong store (after they measured his blood pressure and pulse) and drink the liquid. Somehow the combination of these methods helped him endure 16 years of cancer! Today, my mom was looking for some "Chinese cough drops". She had run out and wanted more. She said that they worked to soothe the throat and that they even freshened the breath! I had to try it! Haha! We found "Golden Throat" at Ding Hong Tong. These lozenges don't contain menthol, but it sure feels like it! It must be the peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil that creates a vapor-like presence in the mouth! Interesting! They come in a box of 12 lozenges for $3.00. Service here was quite helpful. English was spoken and... Golden Throat was being consumed by the cashier! Whoa! I'll be back!

Highly recommend!!…read more My husband found Dr. Wong after a different local acupuncturist turned out to be mediocre (not "bad," but...mediocre) for our needs. I am so grateful that he found Dr. Wong. She and her entire team have been WONDERFUL!! Dr. Wong is extremely smart, knowledgeable, experienced, conscientious, patient, compassionate, and kind, with decades of experience under her belt. Her English is very good, which is important to me because I can't speak Chinese and I always have a lot of questions. She has used a combination of electroacupuncture and herbal prescriptions to help my body become stronger and better balanced following a major life disruption. My husband and I just survived a wildfire that burned our house and our entire town of Altadena (in Los Angeles) down in January. We were extremely fortunate not to have experienced any fatalities on our street, but the wildfire initially displaced almost one hundred thousand people, including our very dear neighbors and friends, who in turn did lose neighbors of their own to tragic fatalities in the fire. We have had a lot of practical/logistical and emotional stress to deal with in the survival aftermath, even though thanks to God and love and support from friends, our little family came out of the situation remarkably intact and ok. Dr. Wong's treatments have been crucial in helping me with sleep, energy level, mood, pain, circulation, mental/emotional/spiritual attitude, and releasing liver/kidney/heart chi stagnation (among so many other important post-wildfire aspects of wellness) and in helping me to manage middle aged medical ailments (menopause, osteopenia, changes in my eyes, changes in digestive function, etc.) so that I can have the stamina to help our little family adjust to new life here on Oahu. I am calmer, I sleep better, my fingernails are more pink (indicating much better blood health and blood circulation), and I am experiencing improved digestive function since switching to Dr. Wong's care. So far (knock on wood), I am not showing any signs of PTSD from the wildfire, even though it would be completely understandable if I did. I have been in long term recovery for C-PTSD from other causes, and Dr. Wong's clinical experience with using TCM to treat PTSD is extremely helpful for my longer term healing and overall health. Tammy, Dr. Wong's assistant, has superhumanly sensitive fingers that are able to adjust electroacupuncture electrical current strength to EXACTLY the level that my body needs on any given day. She creates a safe, client centered environment in which I feel free to call out five minutes into my treatment session to ask for a slight increase in electrical current levels, after my body has had time to acclimate to initial current settings. I am never made to feel embarrassed or ashamed that that's the method my body seems to need, even though it's more work for Tammy to come in a second time for a mid-session adjustment on the electrical current intensity. I very much miss my previous acupuncture doctor (Dr. George Shi at A Beautiful Day Spa in Pasadena, Los Angeles). If you are ever in Los Angeles, I hope you will give Dr. Shi a try! For here, for local context, I am so grateful for Dr. Wong and her team for helping me through an incredibly difficult life situation and for helping me to deepen my understanding of TCM principles and pono striving right here on Oahu.

I was essentially told I had to decide that minute (like literally THAT MINUTE) if I would accept an upcoming appointment in a few weeks. I'm in treatment with a different acupuncturist - it's been 8 months after all - and I needed a moment to think about this. I wanted to review my care plan and goals after not hearing from this practice for so long. Very much caught off guard. I asked if I could have time to think (I wanted about an hour), and was told no - I would need to decide right then THAT MINUTE - and she needed to proceed down the waitlist. I felt extremely pressured to make a decision on the spot, in a very vulnerable aspect of health care - fertility and women's health. I was about to say yes, and then after thinking about it for the three seconds I had and how unprofessional this all felt - my answer turned to a hard "no." This practice made me feel like a mark, a number, an insignificant person on a list to get through until they hit their client booking goals.
