I had a wonderful experience here from start to finish. Doc made me feel that I was in good hands for my first "real" pair of glasses; total professional, down-to-earth & a funny sense of humor too. His staff was very welcoming...plus extremely helpful & knowledgeable when it came time to pick out the right frames for my face (which can be an overwhelming task! lol) Another big-positive is the fact that I didn't feel like I was treated any different, or less than their patients who have "better" insurance than I do (I have Partnership Ins). I had my prescription filled there. After receiving my glasses I got home and noticed no receipt so I called and ask them to send it to me two weeks go by and no receipt. I call again and request it again. I final received it and all it had on it was the cash I paid out of pocket, no mention of what the total was, nothing about what the two insurances I paid nothing itemized. I have been to Dan's Optical since I was in highschool. Out of all the optometrists I'd gone to, this place has made me feel the most welcome. It's so welcoming and personal that some visits ago, the doc even remembered me after I hadn't been in in years! I am very sad to write this, but I think it must be told. I made an appointment for Dan optical. I thought it was in Redding but when I went for my appointment, they told me it was in the other building and Shasta Dam so I said OK. She called over there and everything was OK but when we got there, I just didn't feel right. You have to walk through this big room. There's a lab on one side and the glasses it's hard to see the front desk cause you have to walked in. When walked up too the front desk I told her I had an appointment and I asked if she take a certain insurance and I gave her all the information she told me it would be $40 and I was thankful for that. so I had some concerns about my eyes and I had told her and she goes OK just show the doctor when you go in and I said I have my contacts prescription from last year so she said OK. I'll have the doctor look at it. Well the doctor came out. He was a mature man. He had a paper in his hand that she had given him and I sat down and he said I just wanna let you know I'm gonna charge you $99. OK that's surprise me cause I was told it was 40 so he asked me if I had contacts on and I said yes I do and I said do you want me to take him out? He said no that's weird because I've been wearing contacts for many years and always have to take off my contacts so we proceed an he was talking to me little small talk and he was asking me how I could see and I said you know I know I can't see 100% but I wanna see better so he did a couple test and then he said oh well OK can you read the second line yes kinda of and it goes OK you can get the same prescription you had and I'm like in my mind thinking what why would I come to get the same prescription? Also, I asked him if he can dilate my eyes because I had a concern and he said no I'm not going to dilate your eyes at this point. I was very upset. Nothing had changed from the time I walked in. I was getting nothing except the same prescription and not even my concern. Addressed .my eyes usually get worse over time so then I was ready to go out and then Office goes. Where's my plane ? where's my plane and I guess it was a toy plane he made and he was asking you know where is I said I have no idea. so I went out to pay for the doctor for everything and she said it was a box of contacts cause I have color contacts were $180.00and I thought that was a set so I put it on my card then to find out later it was $386.00 plus the $99.00 for the doctor. I didn't know that they charged me that much until I talked to the bank because I went back and I told the lady I wanted to cancel because all the reasons and I wasn't happy with the service I got I told her about the eye doctor she told me that he didn't belong to the same office she did so it's very disheartening to know that they can charge you that much and do nothing for me .i understand had to pay, but what I received was not what I thought she did give me a refund for everything but . also, there were other issues with other customers while we were there. I did my due diligence to allow this place to make things right with me & I have not heard back. I emailed, sent a fb messenger message 7/31/24 to let Dan know that I purchased glasses with transitioning lenses that had a prescription that was to strong for me. I had just gotten this new prescription so it was my 1st time using it. I was told by the sales clerk to either get another exam which would be out of my pocket or they would make a new lense in my old prescription, which I already have 5 pairs in the old prescription so I do not need another. When I made the purchase the sales clerk stated she would take care of me for any reason if I didn't like the transition lenses or if they didn't work out.Well,when I went back I was very kind, expecting her to fulfill on her word. She on the other hand was upset and didn't seem to care in the least to help me. Telling me to call her manager. She obviously lost her temper for no reason while I sat there with a smile on my face still. I'm shocked to not get any response at all from anyone. So this is my first negative review on here but I feel people need to be warned about this place! It took me over a year and a half to get a working pair of single vision glasses, and that was after over forty unreturned calls during this time period and SEVERAL mistakes on the progressive lenses they upselled me on for hundreds of dollars that they still haven't fixed for me! And they won't return my money or fix them! I have had glasses for 35 years and have never had any kind of ongoing nightmare even remotely like this. A friend of mine went over to try to talk to Dan's Optical, as I am completely stressed, in no condition to deal with this. She went to both locations and was told that they were to be gone until Wednesday , July 12th. I am completely overwhelmed as I have stress and depression already. This has really put me in a bad place. DMV will not give me my license without retaking the vision test, with my first pair of glasses. i have no money to go and get glasses elsewhere. I was sent there by a low-income health center and I will be questioning them as to why you would send patients like me their with their low standards, high prices (?), and lack of follow-through. Went in for a contact lens exam. I got the same prescription for contacts. Which is fine because I can't read with contacts if they are too strong. It was just weird that he didn't see where my prescription was from 2 years ago. I told him my glasses are stronger than my contacts and he didn't check just told me that I had bad vision and cataracts. I can see fine with my contacts and my glasses. I had to wait 30 minutes for a copy of my prescription after my exam. The receptionist said he forgot. Then he wrote the wrong type of contacts and I had brought the boxes of my current contacts. I went to Dan's for new prescription glasses after cataract surgery because they were highly recommended by a friend. I have no complaint about the glasses or the service. Normally, Medicare covers one pair of glasses post-cataract surgery. They told me they don't bill Medicare so I had to pay out-of pocket, but they led me to believe I could be reimbursed and gave me the address to submit my claim. After being denied by Medicare and several appeals I have learned that Dan's does not have a Medicare provider number and there is no way that Medicare will reimburse. So, I am out $500 for the glasses that would have been covered anywhere else. Dan's should stop telling customers they can be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expense. Let preface this review by saying Dan aka Dr. Waldrop and his staff, over the multiple times I visited the location, seemed to be helpful and considerate of the other patients/customers of all ages they were servicing. Now here is an account of my experience. I have owned a pair of Rayban "XL" Wayfarers for 10+ yrs. In that time I have had the lenses replaced twice due dropping them (glass lenses are pretty scratch resistant but "drop proof" they are not). Each time I had the lenses replaced it was around 80$ or 90$. I was in Shasta County and once again needed replacement lenses so I thought I would give Dan's Optical a shot. Dan's staff was friendly and considerate (up until I paid for and recieved my glasses with the "replacement" lenses atleast) and quoted me 60$ for the replacement which was a bargain considering my past experience. When I recieved the glasses back I noticed neither of the lenses had the Rayban logo and were not OEM but was not too concerned given the bargain. When I wasnt wearing the glasses I stored them in the Rayban case I received when I originally purchased the glasses. A little while after the lenses were replaced I noticed faint wear and a scratch on one of the lenses directly in my field of view when I wore the sunglasses. I was not sure how this happened becuase the glasses did not have an significant trauma and trust in the past 10+yrs the pairs of replacement OEM lenses had been through some "punishment" and had not scratched similarly. I then realized the lenses were not only not OEM the lenses WERE NOT GLASS AT ALL. I called Dan's optical to express my concern and was told to bring them by so that Dan could look at them and see if something could be arranged in regards to a discount on another replacement or other compensation. I brought the glasses by with my concern that the lenses were not glass and had scratched easily. These were my options pay for a single replacement lense for the one damaged that would be matched as best as possible or Dan could give me a better quality lenses for the price I initially paid (from my perspective it kind of seemed like an upsell but I still had faith in Dan's service up until this point). Dan provided me with the improved lense replacement, however, we realized the lenses he had used were prescription. So he told me to give him a week or so and check back he also mentioned Monday, Wednesday, and Friday's were his least busy days in regards to patient work load. A week goes by I did not hear back. After leaving multiple messages on the "less busy days" I eventually recieved a call back and was told come in on Monday to pick up the glasses with the "improved quality" lenses (almost 2 weeks had passed at this point). I showed up on the "less busy" Monday to pick up my glasses and walked into the waiting room (wearing a mask due to COVID) Dan was with a older patient and told his staff to take care of something (I do not recall what) and also to "see why he is here" or something to that affect (referring to me). Finally, for the umpteenth time I explained who I was and why I was there. At this point the staff member hurriedly brought out the lenses to see if I liked them but seemed in a rush to move on to the next patient/customer. The lenses looked similar to the original plastic lenses they had used to replace my OEM lenses initially but could not be sure so said they would do. However, after I left I considered my experience with Dan's Optical up until that point and realized I should have a closer look at them before I approved the lenses be replaced. I left a message that I wanted to get more details about the "improved lenses" on Monday and did not hear back. I called twice on Tuesday and did not hear back (especially disconcerting because in my second message I stated I needed the sunglasses for driving for work and in the past had experienced headaches with photosensitivity). After not recieving any call back by near end of day I was done. I am picking up my damaged "replacement" lenses tomorrow. It is worth it to take them to another shop and get OEM lenses as in the past and not deal with the worst customer service experience I have dealt with in recent memory. I would like to add that on Dan's wall there is a featurette of his practice in Enjoy magazine and in the picture he is standing in from of a optometry exam "poster" that at the top reads "EYE CARE" I thought this was a double entendre but after this experience I no longer feel like it is. Also, I worked in a hospital in patient care for 12+yrs and can say, after working overtime more times than I can count, with certainty you can prioritize patients and not neglect other people who are depending on you. I am not sure if Dan responds to these reviews but if so...Dr. Waldrop I am not interested in your response. I do not want an apology. If you want to share your side go for it. Personable and extremely educated in their field, Denise and Dan allowed me a most pleasant and comfortable journey to my perfectly awesome glasses. Was really impressed with Dan's Optical. Friendly very attentive owner, who obviously takes pride in making sure the customer is taken care of. Even offered to repair glasses that I didn't purchase there (An older pair that was falling apart). I felt an almost old fashioned sense of pride in this optical shop and it was very refreshing. I can't say enough good about these folks! I got a prescription at Lens Crafters and then I had Dan's Optical make the glasses. The prescription from LensCrafters was wrong! Dan's Optical gave me an optical check, and then made me a new pair of glasses! And then did not charge me for the redo on the glasses. Even though the mistake was originally from Lens Crafters! Dan's Optical is old fashioned customer care and they really want to do right by there customers. Not just make a fast buck! Overall this place is really good. They will put in your lenses while you wait (unless they are a speciality lens then you have to wait a day). The staff is very friendly and helpful. They have an amazing selection of frames similar to what you would find in the larger city. The only drawback is out of the four pairs of glasses I've brought in for lenses, 2 of them have been come out funny. On the prescription sunglasses I constantly see a rainbow out of the corner of my left eye when I have them on. With my regular glasses, my vision does not feel right. Everything looks weird. Brought them back and they said they were the right prescription strength so I'm not sure. But they make me dizzy when I wear them so I don't wear them all the time. I heard about this shop after placing an order at lens crafters. I was excited when told I could receive my glasses/lenses in just two days (instead of 7 days with lens crafters). I canceled my order with lens crafters (just purchased frames at lens crafters bc dans frames are out of date or cheapy) and ordered at dan's. Well, it seems the two day time period is not the truth, and I have been attempting numerous times to call the shop for an update. I have left messages and other times there has been no answer. When I finally got someone on the line and expressed my frustration, I was told they were busy and will call me back. Still waiting.....should have stayed with lens crafters. read more

Dan has been making my glasses for many years now. He is extremely knowledgable about his field of expertise, has his own lab, has his wife assisting him and his customers. This is a local, family-run business that cares about the quality of service provided. I always learn something new about my frames or lens, get personalized service and have a large variety of frames from which to choose. It usually takes 7-10days for glasses but they are always correct the first time. It may be a bit more of a drive but it is worth it! read more

I bought my 6 year old son Modern Frames at Dan's Optical. They broke within a month. I took them back and they replaced them but they broke again. I went back again and they tried to fix them but said the manufacturer would not replace them again. I found out Modern does replace as many times as they break, however it is not worth the drive to Shasta Lake to repeatedly have to replace the frame. I went back to Miraflex frame until my son gets older and less rowdy. I won't go back to Dan's Optical. read more

First visit for a low cost pair of glasses, referred with positive opinions. When the inexpensive glasses broke a temple piece within 6 months I was surprised, my glasses usually last years. When I got the inexpensively repaired glasses back I discovered they used a non matching temple piece. When pressed they confessed the frames were discontinued floor display so no matching piece available, the other side was replaced to match so I didn't look like a mismatched doofus. (The wear and tear on a display frame also explains the quick breakage IMO) Within 24 hours of having the repaired glasses the screw fell out of the replaced temple piece and lost to the lazyboy recliner. After 3 trips from Redding to Shasta Lake, and countless minutes on hold on the phone because they were "busy", needless to say I won't return. read more
