SCAM POTENTIAL/UNTRUSTWORTHY - After getting all needed parts to replace my back windshield wiper at O'Reilly's next door, they recommended Dan's to attach the new parts. The older man at the front desk at Dan's told me it would be $44 JUST TO ATTACH THE PARTS. On my way home I went to Uncle Ed's and they attached the parts for FREE. In all honesty it was hard not to feel insulted that the Dan's employee thought he could get away with charging me that much. - In my experience (as a 23yo woman) Dan's tried to scam me on a small scale, so it makes me even more worried for anyone who is taking their car here for extensive repairs. Please be careful and try another shop. read more

I've been going to Dans for years. Always up front with the pricing and are very reasonable. I've never once felt as though I was being taken advantage of, or lobbied to do addition work that wasn't needed. My sister car was making a grinding noise so we took it here and they said it was okay and nothing was wrong. A week later we brought it back because I knew it was the breaks and rotors grinding. They patronized me and spoke down to me like I didn't know what I was talking about.... here is a picture of a new break pad and the break pad she had on her car that they said was "just fine".... clearly I don't know what I'm talking about. I would not recommend this place. Either the tech that looked at her car making that grinding noise is lazy or incompetent. Either way? Fire them. Being new to Novi, I wanted a fair and dependable mechanic. I will preface by saying the office people are warm, down to earth, knowledgeable, they charge a fair price, and are salt of the earth type of people. I'm not sure about the actual ppl who work on the cars, tho. 2xs I have fixed cars and it turned out the issue was completely something else. 1st: My steering wheel wouldn't turn. We replaced a part. When I received it, it still wouldn't turn. Now I know I have to dbl check their work So went back in and they had to replace another part....it was a misdiagnosis 2nd: I brought in my car bc it made a lot of noise. They fixed the snorkle. A week later my car is making more noise and I'm stranded in the middle of Detroit. 3rd: I replaced my timing belt a year ago with them, they say the thing that holds the timing belt just went "bad". I appreciate they telling me I need another oil Change and battery replacement bc when my car went dead it looks like it caused a host of other problems. I usually try to give a few chances but 3xs in a row tells me, it's time. I love the office ppl but in the end, the mechanics are the ppl doing all the work and it seems really careless. Doing it right the 1st time is the best way to do work. It seems like the mechanic is just guessing and not doing a thorough job. read more

They give me an honest opinion When the work will be done. The estimates have been reasonable and very honest. DISASTER! DO NOT GO TO DAN'S AUTO REPAIR! They misdiagnosed the problem with my car which resulted in me being stranded. I originally told them I probably need a new alternator. After hundreds of dollars of "diagnosis" they said it was just a short circuit and sent me on my way. When I was stranded on Friday evening I called Dan's Auto but nobody picked up. I had to get it towed to another Auto Repair place which fixed my problem - I needed a new alternator. When I came in to discuss what happened with Dan he refused to reimburse me for anything I paid him and screamed at me until I left his shop. From the very beginning the entire staff was rude to me and acted like they did not need or want my business. I do not recommend Dan's Auto Repair! read more

I've been going to Dan's for years, generally when my vehicle is out of service. They have always done a competent job of repairing whatever was wrong at a decent price. If you live fairly close, they provide a ride to wherever you need to be. The last time I was there with a '98 Mustang, there was a minor problem with the part they ordered, but it ended up being fixed the same day. So, I am not feeling good about spending $881 on my car. Then after I got my car back the CEL came on again and the then said that it is yet another issue that I questioned. I have NEVER paid this much I'm labor costs in my life. Live and learn. Looking elsewhere for all my future auto repairs. You should do the same. They were lucky I allowed them to work on my car at all. Being new to the area, wishing my family and friends had more options for me to investigate. Oh well. $89.50 an hour is outrageous. Brought my car in to have Alternator replaced. At that time I told them my Timing chain (GM LS1) had been inspected by another shop and needs replacement but I did not want the work done as I did not have the money at the time. They went ahead anyways and inspected charging $150 to tell me my timing chain was bad, suprise. 2 weeks later I brought it in to have it replaced, they had the car two days then called to tell me their mechanic is sick, cant do the work, and I needed to pick up my car. So the $150 in diag, the $190 in car rental for the 2 1/2 days while they had my car wasted. Taking it somewhere else. Do not go here. read more

I have to say. Came in with serious engine problems. Transmission was slipping engine was knocking and I was set that I was buying a new transmission. Dan's could have easily replaced my transmission and i would have accepted and paid for it. However, after looking at my car and diagnosing the deeper problem correctly they notice i just needed new cables and plug and I got out of the whole thing under $300. Pretty great news when I was expecting close to $3,000!! Not sure if the services they do are the cheapest or not, but I do know they won't screw you over. read more

Stay away from the dishonest liars! Brought my can in for a new transmission and found out they had replaced my catalytic converter with a non-working one! The part number on the converter proved it! They did not provide me my old parts, and could not provide a receipt for the labor and parts breakdown of cost! Walking out I saw the pile of old exhaust systems in a pickup behind the shop that they install on cars and tell people they are new. They claim to have good reviews and to be honest but this is all fabricated to hide their true unethical business practices. STAY AWAY! read more

I recently had to replace my Jeep antenna and the dealership told me it would cost roughly $300. So I called a few auto shops and was told they couldnt fix it, only the dealer could. I then called Dan's Auto Repair and spoke with Mike who said to bring it in and they would look at it, something the other auto shops wouldn't do. They said they could replace it by ordering the part for cheaper than the dealer. Happy that I would save a good chunk of money, I took it in. The mechanic that fixed it decided to fiddle with the antenna first instead of just replacing it and ended up only replacing part of the antenna, saving me more money! I was thrilled! They ended up saving me $220, were able to do it in a few hours and Mike was extremely pleasant to work with. They are tops in my book and any future auto work I need done will be done by them. Traveling through Michigan on business, I got a double whammy. Brake line snapped AND, wheel bearing went bad. I was expecting the worst.....its just what most repair shops do. (A female...out of state....broken down? Ca- CHING for an auto repair business) Not so here, though. This company went out of its way to help me. They were more than fair on price, kept me informed along the way and could not have been more honest and up front with me. The prices were well below what I was expecting. I thought I would try this shop because it's close to where I work and it looked like it's been around for a while. I brought my 1999 Chevy Suburban in for some simple brake work and when they were finished my car had more problems than before. When I got my car back (the first time) I could hear a screeching sound when I applied the brakes and a clicking sound when I came to a complete stop and the car pulled to the right. They also replaced my steering gear box (which is a whole different mess/review). On my 4th or 5th visit I drove the car with one of their advisors and he claimed not to hear the screeching. Later, they tried to tell me the noise was coming from the U-joint (which was recently replaced), but the noise was clearly being caused by the brakes. I have taken my car back there 7 times now and counting. All-in-all I have spent over $1,800 at this shop and they STILL HAVE NOT FIXED the work they did. Now, I am going to have to pay to get the work done right at a different shop. read more

My wife's car gave out on the freeway near there and I had it towed to Dan's. He diagnosed the problem as a fuel pump and gave an estimate of $508 or thereabouts. I called the mechanic closer to me, Darby's in Redford, and he said it was about a $250 repair. I had the car towed to Darby's, and he did the job for 240. When I had talked to the person at Dan's before towing it, he did not seem surprised at all or apologetic about it. He said, "Great, it's always good if you can get a better price."
