I was referred to Dr. Fessenden's practice by Fast Med Urgent Care. I had finally broken down after…read moredays of pain and sleeplessness and tried to get help. Fast Med couldn't help because I needed a minor surgical procedure, so they called around to local doctors and Dr. Fessenden said he could see me immediately. I left Fast Med and went directly to Pinehurst Surgical Clinic. Keep in mind I had already been poked and prodded in the most private of places for a few hours and been in constant pain for days. At reception they had no idea who I was. They don't believe I'm expected. They call the doctor's office... and the receptionist there has no idea who I am. I call myself... same story. Not 15 minutes ago I had listened to the PA at Fast Med give them my name, DOB, phone number... even my insurance provider. So I left. Without treatment. Without even getting to see the Dr. I did get a phone call back later apologizing for the confusion and could I come back that afternoon. No thanks. Overall, the whole experience was dehumanizing, disheartening, and wasteful. If I'm going to be in pain I'd rather do it at home then be treated like that. And no way in hell am I going to reward this business with my patronage. This isn't what medical care is supposed be like, people.

About six years ago a small lump appeared near my belly button. I went to my primary care…read morephysician where he diagnosed it as an umbilical hernia. He said not to worry about unless it started hurting or got to big. It kept enlarging until he said it was time to do something about it. He referred me to Dr. Fessenden. Dr. Fessenden agreed, we scheduled the out-patient surgery to implant a mesh. During the post operation appointment Dr. Fessenden said "your back will blow out before the mesh fails" and "you have nothing to worry about unless you gain 300 pounds". I followed all post operation instructions. About nine months after the surgery another lump appeared next to the first one. I scheduled an appointment. Dr. Fessenden said I do not have another hernia. He kept alluding that my concerns were for vanity reasons. He said things stick out and said to look at my profile, my knees stick out. He talked about plastic surgery to remove my belly button and used some medical terminology I did not understand. He took a plastic trash bag and pressed a hole it to demonstrate my abdominal lining and what a hernia looks like, again declaring I do not have a hernia. I was perplexed, the lump looked like the one we repaired however, it was enlarging much faster. Dr. Fessenden was clearly aggravated and declared "if you don't trust my 20 years of experience I'll get you what you want". I did not know how to reply. He then said "I'll get you the CT scan and if that does not convince you I don't know what to do". The CT scan revealed I have another hernia. I choose not to use Dr. Fessenden for the repair. I had the mesh Dr. Fessenden implanted removed (took more than an hour) and had a larger one put in. The surgeon who made the repair stated I needed a larger one the first time. If not for Fessenden's arrogance I probably would have not taken the time to write and post this.

On September 21 my stitches which should have been ready to come out ruptured and puss came out. I was in Ohio so came back went to the emergency room since it was the weekend and was placed on antibiotics was informed to see an orthopedic. Since I already had one I called them Monday and was seen. The surgeon at my orthopedic was out due to surgery for himself so I was referred by my orthopedic to Dr Johnson. Dr Johnson asked if my surgeon had both his hands cut off if not then he should still be able to perform surgery on me. He also asked why I waited so long to see a surgeon I tried explaining to him I did everything that I was told to do by the hospital and my pcp. He refused to do the surgery and told me I should just live with it being numb the rest of my life.

A week after my surgery during my follow up he was very attentive and answered all my questions. Later that week I panicked with my new arm brace so I went by the office and he calmed my fears and took the time to show me how to work the brace. I can't say enough about Dr. Johnson and all the staff that work in his office. They all treated me with great care. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
