After several failed attempts with other dentists (one guy was touchy feely and then other had no staff), I learned about Dr. Cave from a friend. To date, I have had several cleaning appointments, cavities filled and root canal work. So, I think I have visited enough to submit a review -- I don't know why people write a review after one appointment. What many of the reviewers say about Dr. Cave being Type A, intense, terse with his staff and somewhat curt is all true but, when it comes to healthcare, I will take a type A perfectionist any day. He obviously cares a great deal about his practice and serving his patients and you can tell because he runs a very tight and efficient ship. The staff are friendly and efficient. I always get calls reminding me about appointments and quick follow ups about payment or other issues. Dr. Cave always tells you exactly what he is doing and why. He also uses a great tool - a rubber wedge - that helps keep your mouth open during procedures to prevent jaw pain and fatigue. It's a miracle. As you may have read, he does have a few "rules" I have observed but they make sense to me: (1) don't touch your mouth (I am guessing he wants a sterile environment); (2) don't look at the computer screen when the schedule is up (I am guessing there is other patients' personal information) and; (3) be on time (duh). read more

I still don't understand how Daniel Cave has received a 4 star rating from his patients / yelp users. I strongly advise everyone to find another dentist in the area, especially if you want a pleasant experience. He makes an appearance at the end of cleanings and that's about it. Forget asking any questions, he rushes you out of his chair so quick, it'll make your head spin. I recently went in for my annual cleaning, I ended up getting pulled over and receiving a ticket - I called ahead to his office (it was 10 minutes before my appointment and I was less than half a mile up the street) to let them know I might be running late. After my cleaning by the hygenist, he walks in proceeds to lecture me about tardiness and then tells me he has no time to spend with me to go over braces. I know that everyone who goes to the dentist is paying for that dentist's time - it's not free. So regardless of whether I'm there on time or not, I expect to get my money's worth, if he's that concerned with getting butts in his chair to bill as much as he can, then he's in the wrong business. I was looking to get braces done with him, but after this last experience, I will not be going back. Especially since I've inquired about getting braces both times I've been to him and he's never taken the time to really explain what I'll need to have done prior to getting braces - i.e, teeth extraction,etc. (I was on-time for the first appt and it was still unpleasant) His front office staff is the only highlight - they're always friendly. read more

I just moved into the DC area, and I am so lucky to have picked the right dentist! So far, I've had 1 cleaning and 1 root canal - both quick and easy..! Yes, you heard me, the root canal was no sweat. I had 1 other root canal last year with another dentist, and trust me, it hurt so bad and I totally dreaded this one. But Dr. Cave made it a breeze. He explained everything he was doing and the reasoning behind every procedure. Now I'm convinced that I was not fully numb for my other root canal..! Just to echo some of the other reviewers, there was no wait, I got right in. The office is nothing to write home about. Dr. Cave is all business. I felt I had to defend Dr. Dan a bit. Yes, he is very straight forward and no nonsense and this can be off putting to some people. But I find him to be very nice and personable as well. He has never pushed any work on me, and even gives me cheaper options for services because I do not have dental insurance. He works with me for better options to fix problems. I have recommended 3 friends to him that all like him fine. He does explain everything he does, and sometime I think I'm supposed to answer but then I remember he's probably just filling in the silence because silence can make people feel unconfortable too. She's professional in that she's good at what she does, but she also takes the time to explain to you what she's doing and what's going on, without a hint of condescension. I started going to Dr. Cave for regular teeth cleaning this year based on Yelp reviews and have been very pleased so far. The staff is extremely friendly and I've never had to wait more than a minute or two, even if I've arrived early for my appointment. The hygenist who cleans my teeth is good, but not significantly better or worse than any other hygenist I've been to. A question for all of Dr. Cave's patients out there -- has anyone had either dental bonding, braces or porcelain veneers done by him? I have small gaps between my front teeth, which aren't ideally shaped either. When I asked him what I could do to fix this he very thoroughly went through these three different options and invited to me call him at anytime with additional questions. Before I make a big investment, I'd like to hear people's experiences with these procedures at Dr. Cave's office -- bonding, braces (not Invisalign) and/or veneers. Thanks! read more

I decided to see Dr. Cave after checking out his reviews here on Yelp and then seeing that he was covered by insurance. I agree with previous reviewers in that it seems like Dr. Cave thinks he is quite special. He didn't have an extra 30 seconds to hear some background on my issue. Nice way to impress a new patient. When I received my reminder card (that I apparently filled out there to send me in six months) I laughed loudly and said to myself "Ah, time to try another dentist!" The dental hygenist I had was fine and did a decent job. Good technique and discussion about cleaning, brushing, flossing. From the second you walk in there you feel like you're on a mission to sit down, shut up, and make his life easier. Maybe I was there on one of his bad days, but yikes was he snappy. Just one example: I had my former dentist send over my last round of xrays - Dr. Cave scolded me for a solid minute about their "poor quality" and how I was disrupting his schedule because now he'd have to take new xrays...I'm still trying to figure out how exactly that's my fault. The only reason it's not one star is because he did his "actual job" well (or at least there weren't issues). No one likes going to the dentist, nevermind a dentist who is terse and unpleasant. Like a picky friend of mine put it: "Don't you love Dr Cave's office? If you have to go to the dentist, that's the way to do it." I love Dr Cave's office. It is nice, welcoming, spotless, and the staff is beyond professional and nice. Dr. Cave is by far the best dentist I have ever had. He is kind, polite, careful, reliable, and skilled. He takes the time to explain what he is doing and what you may feel because of the procedure, and to answer any questions -- with precision and without drama. But he does not waste any time (his, yours, or his staff's). He is efficient. And you do not need to be referred to several different doctors for each procedure. He knows and understands your case, and he takes care of it. In one of my first visits, Dr. Cave removed two of my wisdom teeth and I had no stress or pain before, during, or after. What a difference compared with the previous two removed by a different dentist! Since then, I have entrusted him with all my dental issues. I once had a problem with an implant and he was remarkable at fixing it. Despite all complications I was sure he was doing all humanly possible to resolve it. And he did, entirely to my satisfaction. I subsequently decided to entrust him with some esthetic treatments and the results are fantastic. His hygienist is amazing at cleaning teeth efficiently and painlessly, and at training on dental hygiene. His receptionist is wonderful. I feel like I am receiving an unusually personalized and extremely professional service. I recommend Dr. Cave with my eyes closed as the dentist of choice. We all need to go to the dentist. I've always had good experiences at the dentist, but Dr. Cave is another story. He is rude, condescending, and unprofessional. During a routine filling, I'm simply sitting there with my arms crossed, and he pauses and tells me, "you need to relax!" I reply, "I'm fine." I moved to DC 8 months ago and have been needing a Dentist. I found Daniel Cave on Yelp decided to give him a try. I went in to the office expecting a possible dissapoint because of what I read on here, but was plesantly surprised. The office is small and cramped, but they told me they are about to move to a new larger office. Right now, they are located at 18th and I st next to Farragut West Metro. The two women at the front desk were nice and friendly. The dental hygienist "Phan" took her time and was very very very detailed. She kept asking if I was ok and if "it hurt". Dr Cave then came in and looked at xrays Phan had taken, he let me look at them as well, which was nice. He took 5 minutes to talk to me about DC asking why I moved here and how my business was going. This impressed me, that he actually took the time to chit chat a bit. I never heard him yell at anyone. At one point I told him I had a sharp spot on my tooth and stuck my finger in my mouth to show him. He looked at me and said " please don't stick your fingers in your mouth while you are here" I said "Yes Sir". He smiled, told me to close my eyes and not think about what he was doing, he then ground down the spot asked me to feel it with my tongue, I said "it feels great now" he smiled again and said" I'll see you in 6 months" and he moved on to the other room. I like that he is to the point on things and speaks his mind, some people don't do well with that, others do. I liked him, and everyone in his office and will be back in 6 months. read more

I stumbled upon these reviews when I googled Dr. Cave's phone number to change an appointment, and I went to the trouble of signing up for Yelp just so I could add a little more balance to the overall opinion. Yes, Dr. Cave can be gruff and off-putting at times. Yes, he reduced a friend of mine to tears (the last time I ever recommended a medical practitioner to anyone!). But if you play by his rules (Rule #1: be on time!!!), then I find him to be a competent dentist and even downright friendly. I had the same experience as one of the PP, where I got a root canal without him ever saying those two words. When he described what he was going to do, I thought "that sounds like a root canal", but I never asked and he never said. I actually really liked that approach, as I wasn't scared going in and the whole thing was really rather painless in the end. Like someone else mentioned, another thing I like about him is that he explains everything as he is doing it. He also is clear with me about what needs to be done now and what can wait, even working with me to be sure I have enough money in my FSA before doing a procedure with a high out-of-pocket cost attached. It all depends on what you like. If you're looking for someone to hold you hand and tell you everything is going to be ok, Dr. Cave ain't it. But if you want someone no-nonsense who will get the job done and keep you informed, he may be a good choice. I've never had any major dental issues to speak of, so after reading the reviews, I went to my first check-up with Dr. Cave taking care to be on time, etc. I found the entire office to be extremely friendly and thorough. The front desk folks were quick, helpful and kind. Phan cleaned my teeth and explained everything as she went along. Dr. Cave was extremely professional and friendly. It was as enjoyable as a dentist visit can be. There was no pushing from anyone to have any work done and options were always mentioned. I have a few "problem spots" that made need attention in the future, but I appreciate that they did not try and force to me to get filling for such minor issues (not full-fledge cavities). A friend referred me to Dr Kham and I can say that even after a double root canal, I love him. He's a very sweet dentist, not an alarmist, very reassuring and great if you're nervous about dental work (which I definitely am). Staff was super friendly, knowledgeable about taking my insurance, and called the next day after my procedure to check in and see how I was doing. On top of all that, my appointments started right on time which was pretty amazing considering I got them on short notice (one same day and then next day for the actual root canals). read more

I've been going to Dr. Cave for about three years. I have "problem" teeth, and while I've lived with them all my life I am still no pro at dental visits. Dr. Cave is excellent. He takes the time to know the patient personally, not just what is going on in their mouth. He knows my fears about dental procedures, and is sensitive about these issues. He talks me through each step of the process, letting me know what is going on, and what to expect, what might be uncomfortable/painful. His honesty is very much appreciated! Due to my, ahem, oral complications, Dr. Cave has seen me on holidays and weekends, provided me with his personal phone number, and provided consultation from several states away during an ER visit where I had knocked out some teeth in an accident. He doesn't seem put off during these non-traditional office hours, and doesn't make me feel like I'm inconveniencing him. He seems to truly care. I'm in the process of relocating abroad, and will be scheduling my cleanings/visits when I am back in town. I couldn't imagine changing dental providers! read more

I have been a patient of Dr Cave's for many years. Dr Cave can run hot and cold - meaning he can be very friendly or beligerent, arrogant and rude depending on how his day is going. During my recent visit he treated me like a number and not a long time patient. Also found him very unprofessional a couple of visits ago when he and his hygenist were discussing at length the front office staff issues while I was in the chair. He can be very condescending if you don't describe your issue properly and he is quick to point out your are wrong. Sometimes it is difficult to isolate or describe pain and he should realize this and be a bit more empathetic. While I think he is very competent and skilled, I find his demeanor could be more pleasant. read more

There's something painful about watching a human being totally humiliate another human being. It's the feeling I had on 2/3 of my visits to Dr. Cave's office. My first visit was just a cleaning -- he was terse and exchanged (read: feigned) pleasantries but, all in all, was harmless. My second and third visits were to fill cavities. Over and over, he berated the dental hygienist helping him -- for not having a specific utensil in exactly the right position at the right time, for taking too long, etc. etc. And he did this all as I sat right there with my mouth wide open. Even if my mouth hadn't been forced open because of the procedure, it would have come open. I can't stress this enough: this guy is literally one of the worst humans I have ever come across. Previous reviewers have used the following logic in defending this guy: well, he lacks some people skills, but he gets the job done and that's what I care about. And generally I feel the same way. What matters to me is that my teeth are worked on properly, not that I become bff's with my dentist. But there's a certain limit to what I will put up with, and Dr. Cave far exceeds it. There are plenty of other dentists out there who do good work AND treat their employees with at least a shred of respect and human dignity. read more

Like most people, I hate going to the dentist. HATE IT. This office, however, is a gem. The staff are always warm and shockingly seem to care about you. I've been to plenty of offices where the staff was just counting down the minutes until they get to leave, so I really appreciated their kindness. My first visit I saw Dr. Kham, who actually did my cleaning himself. In fact, I've never had an appointment that he didn't run. I.e. pass you off to a hygienist. Not that his hygienists aren't also fabulous, because they are. Dr. Kham will talk you through any procedures as he does them, and is very cheery, kind and calm (even though I'm a horrible patient). Afterwards, he'll often walk you back out the door and help you check out. Overall, the office is clean and welcoming, the staff are great, and Dr. Kham is fantastic. They play Pandora stations over the intercoms and you can frequently catch staff singing along. I would 100% recommend this place. read more

This review is for my dentist , Dr. Sai Kham from Daniel Cave & Associates. I heard about him from my colleague. His office takes my insurance. So I made an appointment to see him. Making the appointment over the phone was easy. The office was very clean and nice. They have beautiful orchids and nice paintings in waiting area. It took me a few minutes to fill out the paperworks and then I was seen right away. They don't waste your time at all! The staffs are professional and courteous. His assistant took X-rays for my teeth and right after it was done, Dr. Kham saw me. He is friendly & relaxed yet professional. He did a very thorough exam, reviewed my x-rays and he explained all the findings very clearly ( he has a foreign accent and he spoke with the mask on his face. So it was a bit difficult for me to understand him. it's not a big deal though). I found out that I needed a few fillings and a root canal. I was scared to death at first! But he explained what the rootcanal is and assured me it wouldn't be bad as I thought. fast forward, I had the rootcanal done on my next visit and it went really well. Dr.Kham truly cared for my comforts during the procedure and he explained every step of the procedure he was doing. He also fixed all my cavities in following appointments . Every time I went in, I was seen promptly . Procedures were done fast and painless with constant care and concern for my comforts. Now I just need to get my crown done on that root canal tooth and I am going there again next month for it. I couldn't be happier that I found such a good and caring dentist. Dr. Kham rocks! This review is for Dr. Kham (I haven't seen Dr. Cave so I have no opinion on him): I highly recommend Dr. Kham, I found him to be very friendly, knowledgable, and efficient (he fixed a chip in my tooth and did my cleaning in an hour). He did my cleaning himself (I've always had a dental hygienist do it with other dentists), and explained what he was doing and why it was necessary every step of the way, and I left his office feeling like I had actually learned something about my teeth! In addition to Dr. Kham, the office staff are great: they submitted my bill to my insurance within a week so I was able to receive my bill from them less than three weeks after being in (in comparison, my last DC dentist sent me a bill nearly 10 months after my cleaning), and they also worked with me to get copies of my xrays from a previous dentist so that I didn't have to pay for new ones. They keep things running on time (I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes), and seemed to remember me when I called to confirm an appointment. This review is for Dr. Kham. I used to think I went to pretty great dentists. After going to Dr. Kham, I believe that they all pale in comparison. I had a routine cleaning and x-rays this morning. The experience was overall excellent. I am new to DC, so I had been calling around and researching different dentists. The receptionist I spoke with on the phone from Kham's office when I first scheduled the appointment was the friendliest and most flexible I encountered. (Others from different offices whom I had spoken to were rude, annoyed by my questions, etc.) In person, the receptionists were also super friendly and helpful and offered to look up my insurance info as I was fumbling around in my phone to try and find my group #. I was seen by Dr. Kham very quickly. I can't speak highly enough about his professionalism and kindness. He literally explained every single thing he did, why he did it and what it tells us about my teeth. I learned more about dental health in those 30 minutes than in all of my previous dentist appointments in my 27 years on this earth. I finally know why they poke your gums (to measure the distance between your gum and teeth which indicates gum health). He also explained all of the x-rays thoroughly. I told him I grind my teeth while sleeping; he is the first dentist who actually took time to explain the risks of grinding, but also didn't try to sell me on one of the expensive custom made dental guards (which all of my previous dentists did). He explained that since my level of grinding hasn't affected my jaw nor made my teeth flat, I don't really have to wear anything at night (including the over-the-counter night guard I currently wear, from Target). Refreshing honesty! I also found out that, despite the fact that I floss daily, I have been flossing wrong and so at the end of the appointment he walked me through the proper way to floss. Other hygienists and doctors who I've seen in the past just let me bleed and told me to floss more. Dr. Kham showed me with a mirror and actual floss the proper technique. The final touch that I have to mention was that Dr. Kham put lip moisturizer on my lips mid-cleaning because they were dry. Seriously?! Nicest person ever. I highly recommend Dr. Kham and his whole staff (x-ray technicians, receptionists, etc.). Everyone was great! I feel super informed and empowered about my dental health. read more

Office runs on time, friendly staff, take my insurance, has great original artwork on the walls, and best of all - has a carefully curated selection of current magazines designed to appeal to all tastes (Architectural Digest, Consumer Reports, News, Sports, Parenting, Fashion etc) - now if only they weren't so prompt then I could read the magazines more. I see Dr. Kham who has an excellent friendly demeanor and explains everything to you. The dental assistant is warm and welcoming but not too friendly (I don't want to be chatted up the whole time). Dr. Kam was wonderful. I had to have a TON of work done (my fault) and he just could not have been more patient about explaining the procedures. I also have to heap praise on the office for working with me on my bill. Through an unfortunate error, I discovered after all that dental work that I was not properly enrolled in my work's dental insurance program. The office was sympathetic and immediately offered to reduce the bill. I'm very grateful to them and would recommend them whole heartedly. Worst Experience Ever!!!! Lack of Customer Service and Professionalism. My appointment was at 4.30pm, I arrived 4.25 and the Doctor's assistant (she refused to give me her name, "heavy women" sitting behind the Front Desk) said that since I was late to fill out the paperwork ( I should have arrived at 4.20), the Doctor might not be able to perform what I needed to have done. I asked if it would be a good idea to re-scheduled and she said no, she kept repeating I was late????. I replied that I wanted to make sure he will be able to see me that day, before I pay for my visit, otherwise I would have no problem to come back another day. I waited for the Doctor to finish with his patient. At this point I was surprised by her lack of customer service. I was reading a magazine waiting for the Doctor and she kept mumbling things that I could hear, and this is because I arrived 5 minutes before my appointment????. Finally the Doctor showed up in the waiting room ("he was standing like if he were at a Bar, drinking on a Friday night", not impressed with him, definately not the right posture to talk to your patient) I explained to him about not being late and the "hard time given by his assistant because I arrived 5 minutes late to fill out paperwork" He questioned me about my conversation with the assistant (she changed things around in front of him, "she said, you said") and after realizing that this conversation wasn't going anywhere I apologize for "wasting his time" and I decided to leave. I left confused, it was very hard to believe that a "Doctor/Professional" will treat first time "Patients/Clients" like this. He should have allowed me to fill the papework and should have explained kindly (I don't think he know what that means) that he would need to re-schedule because I arrived 5 minutes EARLY for the appointment!!!!! So if you are looking for a dentist who will give you a root canal without telling you than this is the guy for you. I was told I had an infection in my tooth that had to be cleaned out and then capped. Ok, for someone like me who has never experienced a root canal I'm going to take that literally. When I went back for my follow up crown appointment I arrived at 1:45 for a 2pm appointment only to find the door locked in the middle of the day. I waited until 2:02 and after calling multiple times while I stood outside a locked door I was turned off by the unprofessionalism and left. 20 minutes later I was subjected to a voicemail on my phone, not apologizing, but accusing me of not waiting long enough. I was done and decided to go back to my old dentist near an earlier place of work. Only THEN did I find out I had had a root canal, and not only that, it maxed out my dental insurance and so now I am paying for a crown out of pocket. (BTW if you go through these yelp reviews you will find multiple people had the same experience as I with regards to getting a secret root canal) I will NEVER EVER go back to this dentist. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had with a dentist. While the receptionist and hygienist were polite and professional, Dr. Cave was rude and demeaning. He refused to answer any questions and reprimanded me when I tried to talk or ask him to clarify something. I am not a delicate flower or easily offended and this man was truly offensive and awful. He is brusque, but very professional and knowledgeable and I love how he talks you through each step of the procedure. His staff are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I've had a terrible experience with his actual dental work. I went in for a check-up with no noticeable problems - my teeth felt great. He told me I needed 5 fillings and 2 crowns. I've always had problem teeth and he seemed very competent, so I didn't think much of it. I wish I had done like the previous reviewer and gotten a second opinion. That was 3 months ago. I have been in pain ever since, and I worry he has done irreparable damage to my teeth: - After the procedure my gums were badly inflamed for a week and I could barely eat - Every filling has given me intense pain for months, especially when flossing. I've never experienced dental pain like this before - He ground away a large chunk of a healthy tooth to make space for my crown. When I began to have pain in that previously healthy tooth, he told me I would need another crown. Too bad about ruining my tooth, but at least you can get a few hundred more $$$ out of it, right? - One of the fillings was too high, and though I mentioned it in several subsequent visits, he refused to fix it, telling me I was simply "wrong." I've had jaw pain and headaches for weeks as a result - I'm having deep, aching pain in several of the teeth he worked on, and I'm scared I'll need root canals to fix them. - He used this spiky floss to grind down fillings between the teeth and cut me twice in the corner of my lip, creating ugly, pimple-like lesions that took over a week to heal. When I (politely, I thought) asked him to be more careful the next time, he denied cutting me, and insisted the lesions were from an oral yeast infection. This was maybe our most bizarre interaction; he definitely cut me, why deny it? This was when I started to realize my health and comfort were not his top priority. I don't mind paying a lot for dental care, but I need to know the dentist isn't carelessly damaging my oral health/comfort for profit.
