Dr. Wong is simply the best dentist I've been to and I've been to many. I started going as a emergency patient in 2009 and was so impressed that he is now the only Dentist I would ever go to. He is patient, explains everything in detail and in layman terms and makes sure you are comfortable. He has never tried to " sell" me any services or products. He just gets to the point and gets it done. The office is Unpretentious just like him. It's clean and efficient. The office manager , Penny is extremely nice and always try's to accommodate his patients. This office has taken my fear of dental work away! read more

I came here based on high yelp reviews, location, and the less than one week turn around for the scheduling of a new patient. The place is tucked on the first floor of what I think is an apartment building; it resembles a refinished basement but is definitely clean. The hygienist was great. She addressed my concerns seriously and focused on cleaning my teeth. She was a bit chatty but she was friendly; it was a great distraction from teeh cleaning, which I've never enjoyed. From doing an additional cleaning to using gel for the pain, she went above and beyond. Dr. Wong briefly popped in at the end and after checking my teeth said I had no problems! He was very friendly, and though he didn't seem to realize it was my first time, I valued his warmth and competence. The receptionist was also helpful when I asked questions about my insurance coverage. Rather than being bothered, she actually praised me for asking and staying informed. Overall, this isn't my hometown dentist but it was convenient, efficient, and I got great service. It's in my insurance network too so I think I found a new local dentist! read more

Dr Wong has helped me with dental crises multiple times in the past 10 years. And this fall he did it again. I had a seriously chipped tooth, and he fixed it with utter simplicity, accuracy, and explained everything to me. It was *perfect.* This is the same as each time I've had a dental crisis while in DC (I normally live elsewhere but spend time here). I have utter confidence in Dr Wong--and also appreciate his practice. While, yes, his practice isn't fancy on the admin side, everything is quick and smooth even so, and he is highly accessible, easy to reach, and things have worked out well on the business side. I also just started going to see him as my routine dentist this month since I am increasing my time in DC. Working with him on prevention, again, was clear, educational, practical, efficient, and I am very happy about having him as my dentist. A word about COVID. I have now been to Dr Wong twice in the pandemic. His office feels very safe, and he is direct and transparent about the many steps that he--and I as a patient--and his team are taking. read more

I was a loyal patient with Dr Wong for 12 years and often recommended him to friends. For the first 10 years or so, I felt he was terrific. Patient, gentle, and very skilled -- I had many cavities filled by Dr Wong, some of them large and complicated, and I completely trusted him. In recent years, however, the whole practice went down the tubes. With the exception of Susie, The hygienist, the office staff were consistently incompetent on all matters (billing, scheduling, general interpersonal skills). And Dr Wong's care became more and more rushed, impatient, and even rough at times. (For example, a year ago, I had major bruising to my jaw muscles after rough handling during a filling. When I called Dr Wong to ask what to do, he told me it's because I grind my teeth, which I don't do. It took months to heal.) Now that I've moved out of the area and am seeing a new dentist, where equipment is modern, staff are professional, and the care is through and careful, it's all the more clear to me how poor Dr Wong's practice has become. Sadly, I do not recommend Dr Wong's practice any more. read more

Disclaimer: This is a very belated review, which nonetheless should be out there for others to consider and learn from my mistake. I started seeing Dr. Wong in 2008, who was keen to suggest replacing few old fillings. At first he seemed OK and I agreed to whatever he suggested. Then, one of my teeth, which got (an unnecessary) new filling, was my (unfortunate) left central incisor (known as E). Fast forward to February 2009, E started to hurt and very soon the pain became intolerable. I went to see Dr. Wong who upon examining it told me that the filling was old and did not interact well with E's root and as a result it might be dying. In distress, I reminded him that he was the one who had worked on this filling ~three months ago! In spite of all Xrays and what not, Dr. Randall couldn't recall his own masterpiece! As a result, my tooth did die as I got pus, had to take antibiotics and then do a root canal procedure and finally get a crown. Besides going through this unpleasant experience, I had to spend unnecessary money and have ever since been very unhappy I had to let go my natural tooth and was stupid enough to agree on having fillings when they're not truly necessary. While Mother Nature and other factors might have had a hand in the death of my tooth, I do hold accountable Dr. Randall for an unnecessary intervention and for not remembering a filling he himself had done. I immediately stopped seeing Dr. Randall and sought a new dentist with whom I have been very happy as he doesn't just see $$$s in my mouth but is considerate and explains well and without rushing what my options are, doesn't push services and allows me to make an informed decision. read more

So I chipped my front tooth a few days ago and I just moved to DC from New York. Knowing that my old insurance was going to lapse tomorrow, I called Dr. Wong this morning and explained my situation to his staff. The woman who answered (I believe it was Jackie but I apologize if I'm mistaken) was incredible, and although they didn't have any availability to see me, she promised she would "check with Dr. Wong" and get back to me. Half an hour later, she called and told me to come by at 4:45, which is 15 minutes after closing time. Within a few minutes of my arrival this afternoon, Dr. Wong had applied some bond to my front tooth and now everything looks just the way it should. And the best part about it is that Dr. Wong didn't even charge me. He said that he hoped to see me again when I had new insurance, but that this procedure was on the house. Seriously? This guy and his staff are awesome. read more

COULD. NOT. GET. AN. APPOINTMENT. I saw all the great reviews wanted to go see him. I called early December and the first time, the machine answered that they are out of the office. I called at 4, they close at 5. What is this. I left a message expressing my interest to book an appointment, left my name, number (and repeated it), never got a call back. Second time I called, it said that the doctor would be out of the office until some date that had already past. Called again the following day, same thing. Called the fourth time today, tried three times, always got busy tone (honestly, who still has that any more). Third time, some rude sounding girl picks up, mumbles something that I assume is the name of the place, and asks me to hold. Held for 5 min, hung up. Found someone new. If you can get an appointment, go ahead and try. But I checked for a provider off my insurance's site. There are a billion dentists in this area, don't waste your time. read more

I just left the office, and will not be going back. I had an appointment scheduled for this afternoon, and took a Lyft over to make my appointment on time. I waited 10-minutes, only to be called up to the desk to be told that they made a scheduling error, and if I could wait at least another 40 minutes, they could maybe see me then. I understand things happen. But this appointment was confirmed yesterday. The office called me on Sunday to confirm the appointment, and they wait until 10-minutes AFTER I arrive to advise me that they couldn't see me at that time? It's in the middle of the work day... I don't have the option of waiting around. Not to mention that I paid to travel there and back for no reason. And ironically, they acted like, well, this stuff happens. The response I got at the desk was, "well, we didn't know until you got here that there was a mix-up, and if you'll wait, we'll still try and fit you in"-- as though they were doing me a favor. NO, THANK YOU. You've wasted my money, and more importantly, my time. read more

I waited FAR too long to go to the dentist, and I am very happy that my friends recommended Dr. Wong to me. Dr. Wong didn't actually clean my teeth--the dental hygenist did, and it was one of the most enjoyable teeth cleanings I've ever sat through. She was very receptive to sensitive areas, and made sure I was very comfortable the whole time. I loved the goodie bag of toothpaste and toothbrushes, and my dentaquest insurance covered the entire visit. Dr. Wong did a final check on me afterwards, and I could tell he was really great at what he does. read more

Dt. Wong is an artist and a genius. Dentistry requires a deft touch, wide-ranging skill, and, most of all wisdom. He has it all. Have been a happy patient for decades. Had a dental emergency this week -- he spoke with me on the phone at 6PM, texted a next day appointment time (despite being fully booked for more than a month) before 7AM the next day, and responded to my follow-up question within minutes. I just got back from going to Dr. Wong for my first time. First off, I hate going to the dentist. It probably has something to do with the fact that I do not have great teeth (thanks mom). I went to a dentist in Van Ness for years who was always trying to sell me stuff. I find it completely inappropriate when you're being taken advantage of in while in a precarious position - literally. Dr. Wong and his assistant are awesome: super funny and nice. It made a potentially painful experience a lot easier to swallow. I still have to go back and get some work done - but now I am not so scared. read more

My husband and I have been using Randy for 20 years. He is so wonderful and has always been able to take us in an emergency. He recently performed implant surgery on me (6 teeth) and they look absolutely beautiful. I was very nervous about the surgery but it didn't hurt and Randy walked me through all the steps.Is it too much to say he changed my life? Dr. Wong is a superb dentist, easily one of the best I've seen. He's polite, explains what he's doing, and doesn't push non-essential procedures. He's guideline-orientated and very personable. After my first visit, he noticed that I listed an urgent care facility for my primary care physician. He called me, thanked me for the visit, and recommended a few physicians. As someone a bit overwhelmed with the physician choices in the area, this was immensely helpful - and really shows the extra mile of care he takes with his patients. It is difficult to get on his calendar and his voicemail seems a bit odd. You may have to call a few times. The admins I ran into were competent and polite. Otherwise, he's a one-man practice who seemingly does most, if not all, of the cleanings himself, so he's quite busy. But if you're looking for an appointment 3-4 months out and want to get onto a regular rotation with someone, I can't think of a better dentist. read more

Dr. Wong has been our family dentist for about 15 years. He is the best dentist I have ever experienced. I am 74-years-old and must have had at least five major dentists during my life. Here is an example of his work: I woke up with pain in one of my teeth; I called his office and Dr. Wong saw me that afternoon--even though he is normally booked up weeks in advance. He discovered I needed an immediate root canal to relieve the pain. His office called a highly regarded DC endodontist who saw me in three days--again the usual wait for this endodontist is months. After she performed oral surgery to relieve the pain I was told to go back to Dr. Wong to finish the work. Again, he saw me right away and spent over an hour restoring the tooth. Because Dr. Wong accepts my dental insurance plan, I expect the co-pay to be minimal. I highly recommend Dr. Wong. read more

I'm not a big fan of going to the dentist, but I'm a big fan of Dr. Wong. That said, he's well aware of my phobia and adjusts his approach accordingly. He always keeps me abreast of what he's doing, which for me helps keeps me at ease. He also wraps up our appointments with the latest recommendations from the ADA on preventative care. I came across Dr. Wong by a referral from a friend and I would be more than happy to recommend him to my other friends as well. read more

This poor review is due entirely to the utter incompetence of Dr. Wong's administrative staff. I have had appointments cancelled on less than a half hour's notice, but I kept coming because I like Dr. Wong and his assistant. However today was the last straw. Last week I called to schedule an appointment and was told (1) the only slot available in the coming weeks was today at 2pm (just a cleaning - no dentist), and (2) they had changed their policy, so I would now need to pay up front and then get reimbursed by my insurance. I was not pleased but scheduled the appointment anyway. After I rearranged my schedule and worked from home specifically so I could go to my 2pm appointment today, I showed up to find that, in addition to requiring payment up front, they put a 5% surcharge on credit card payments. This had not been disclosed when I called to schedule an appointment, or else I would have brought cash or my checkbook. Then, to top it all off, it turned out that the woman with whom I spoke with last week neglected to put the appointment on their schedule. She offered no apologies and merely stated that she was "surprised." Well, I will no longer deal with the "surprises" that come with dealing with Dr. Wong's administrative staff and their complete disregard for their boss's patients. read more

Total time for my annual cleaning this morning, including wait time: 36 minutes. INSANITY. Thanks to Sophie (Susie? I'm sorry), the dental hygienist, who did a fantastic job, and would talk to me about what she was doing whenever I winced. I felt at ease, and could tell she was knowledgeable and confident in her training. I have been going to Dr. Wong for a few years, and I only have good things to say. He is the dentist that I chose when I finally decided to be an adult and get my teeth cleaned on a regular basis, which means he is also the person that got me for that first unfortunate appointment. He measured my gums, took out a bunch of gross stuff, and didn't give me grief about avoiding the dentist. That is why I keep coming back! I have had a few fillings done, as well as a crown re-fitting, and everything has gone well. With the fillings, Dr. Wong didn't try to sell me on the expensive white material - in fact, he told me that silver was more economical and a better fit. He also packed a special compound inside the 1 really bad tooth before covering it, and the method he used saved it from a root canal. As for the crown re-fitting, he was also thorough and fixed the problem. I've never had issues getting an appointment, and I haven't had issues rescheduling. The women at the front desk have been great to work with. read more

Dr. Wong is the best dentist I've visited in DC -- and really, the best dentist I've ever visited! Absolutely recommended! While it's true that it's difficult to get an appointment, especially for your first visit, it really is worth the wait. I've gone to other dentists in DC and they've been terrible -- both in customer service and dental service. After my horrendous experiences with other dentists in the area, I've gotten lucky with finding Dr. Wong and have been going to him for years. You'll deal with Dr. Wong pretty much most of the time you're in the dental office. There have even been times where he's the one answering his own phones! Unlike other dentist offices who pass the job off to their dental hygienist, Dr. Wong will do your dental exam and your cleanings. The exams and cleanings are gentle and thorough. If you happen to need other work done, or think you do and want to ask him about it, Dr. Wong is very detailed and up front with the necessity of the work and the costs that may be incurred. If you have any questions or concerns, he's very open to talking you through any issues and questions. The office is located on the lower level of a mixed-use building -- I think mainly an apartment building, so you can't tell from the outside it's where his office is, as it's not clearly advertised... at least not that I've particularly noticed. But the location is great, once you know where it is. I've always been able to find street parking within a block and it's within very easy walking distance of the Dupont Metro Station. read more

His reception staff were also able to fit me in on short notice to repair a chipped tooth. Overall lovely office I would recommend to anyone. Recently, Dr. Wong and his excellent hygienist, Susie, found a problem with one of my implants. They referred me to a periodontist for follow up. Now, two weeks after surgery to remove years of infected tissue, I am on the way to complete healing and hopefully, can look forward to many more years of healthy teeth and gums. Dr. Randall Wong is an artist among dentists, I am super-impressed with his knowledge, skill, clear devotion to his work, and high level of respect and care for his patients. I don't say this lightly, since I am picky and have been to excellent dentists in cities all across the US. It is a small practice so Dr. Wong cleans your teeth himself, which is rare and wonderful. He gives valuable advice and respects his patients' choices and wishes. His receptionist is a sweetheart. AND he takes insurance. It doesn't get better than this. I'm a bit skeptical about the authenticity of all the rave reviews for Dr. Wong. Doesn't it seem that many are written in the same general style? I have never been to a dentist who seemed so intent on selling me stuff. He was pitching me this night guard because apparently my teeth have been ground to tiny stumps, and he just wouldn't let up. He told me it would cure my headaches. I said that I don't have headaches, he told me, "You need this bad!", in a tone I associate more with car salesmen then doctors. (By the way, I'd asked my dentist in Baltimore about a night guard because I'd heard so much about them. He said I didn't need it.) He filled two teeth for me. At the appointment, after he started he says, "How about I just fill these others while I'm here." I couldn't talk to say no, but was waving my hand no. he was pretending to not understand, "Okay, so I should fill them?" Come on, guy. He didn't fill them, but that is not professional behavior. All dentists do the thing where you raise your hand if you feel pain. He sets the same rule, but ignored me when I raised my hand. The worst thing about him, though, is the way he speaks to the receptionist. Having seen the way he yells at her in front of patients, I would hate to know what it's like when they're alone. read more

After not seeing a dentist for over 4 years, I finally sucked it up and made an appointment with Dr. Wong. I agree with the first reviewer - Dr. Wong really is awesome! He didn't chastise me or make me feel bad that I hadn't seen a dentist in so long when I told him. He did a thorough examination. Wow - they really have great new technology. Dr. Wong mapped out a plan for how to repair my neglected mouth. He took into account that I am paying out of pocket and has told me what is most important first. We agreed I will take care of those first then take care of the less pressing issues later in the year. I'm so ecstatic that I finally went to the dentist and found such a great one! read more

He is by far the worst dentist ever. He did a root canal on one of my molars that had a crown on it. I questioned why he was not referring me to a root canal specialist, but he said he easily could do it. I am now suffering with the same tooth because he did not get the entire root out. read more

Dr. Wong was a life savior, as was his Dental Assistant Alexandra. I walked in crying because my tooth had chipped and thought I would have to get a crown, something I cannot afford at the moment since i'm in school. Alexandra calmed me down and then, along with Dr. Wong performed some kind a procedure that nearly seamless fixed the chipped tooth without having to add a crown. He was so helpful and kind and provided clear guidance for how to treat my tooth until the next day when I could see someone.
