Ask the Community - Modern Dentistry

Hi everyone, I've gone to MD for years. They seem to have a policy of making you prepay for any services (except cleanings). Am I the only one who has experienced this?

When I got my nightguard, I paid half beforehand and the other half after I received the nightguard. I think that's reasonable given that some people might not pay after receiving an expensive service (night guard, fillings, etc.).

At my first appointment with Dr. Telis, he was able to show me x-rays moments after taking them, on a screen that sits right in the room. (A+ for technology!) He went to work right away, and developed a plan to get some much needed work done. I'm very appreciative that Dr. Telis and his team listened to my concerns, addressed what was most urgent first, and suggested a reasonable care plan moving forward. The folks at the front desk are very friendly. They call prior to the appointment to confirm. The day after major appointments, they call to see how I'm feeling. They also greet me by name each time I arrive. They were also very reasonable when it came to creating a billing/payment plan. When I found out I would need extensive dental work, they checked what my insurance would cover, and then were willing to allow me to make payments over time to cover what I was responsible for. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the services rendered by the Chevy Chase Dental team. The front desk, dental hygienists and doctors are all very personable. Dr. Telis is very personable, explaining what's happening with each procedure while doing the work. He and his assistants have put me at ease when I felt anxious about what's going on prior to and during the procedures. I would highly recommend the team at Chevy Chase Dental Center to anyone who's looking for a practice that is friendly, uses the latest technology, and does thorough work! Thank you Chevy Chase Dental Center!

Severe dental anxiety and a few years of no dental insurance left me needing work that could not be…read moreprocrastinated anymore. I choose this place because they had good reviews from other people with dental anxiety. The first two visits, I saw a female doctor I couldn't catch her name. She and her assistant put me at relative ease. She did x-rays, a deep cleaning, a removal, and bone graft. I managed to sit through it without freaking out, largely due to the demeanor of the dentist. My hands were shaking but they gave me a stress ball to squeeze and I made it through. Next I was scheduled to return and get the stitches removed and some fillings done. After the bone graft took, she planned to do an implant. The work order was written up and approved by me. But on the day of my visit, I got a call saying the female dr was out on a family emergency. But I'd be seen by Dr Lim. Ok... Well, Dr Lim came into the room. The dental assistant told me that he was quiet, but was a great dentist who specialized in root canals. I was already nervous, and Dr Lim's bedside manner did not improve. First, he wasn't just quiet, he kept dropping and adjusting my chair without warning, jerking my body around. Without reviewing notes, he removed the stitches (I had to tell them where they were). Then looked at xrays, and growled, "I'm going to do a root canal." and left the room. The front desk lady came in with a new work order and cost estimate. Dr Lim basically ignored everything that the other dentist did, and just wanted to do a root canal in a tooth that the other dentist didn't mention. When I asked about the other work, the desk lady fetched the paperwork. Together, with the root canal and cap, planned implant, and fillings, it was more than I could swing. At this point, my anxiety was very high. Dr Lim came back in the room to explain why I needed the root canal. He pointed to the x-rays, which I don't know how to read. He said, in a very hostile tone, that if I didn't get it fixed, the cavity would just get worst. He said he didn't see the point of the planned implant when I needed other work on teeth that were closer to the front of my mouth. During our interaction, he demonstrated that he hadn't reviewed my prior treatment notes by saying he'd address a problem with my teeth that the other dentist had already fixed (but still showed up on the original x-rays). I didn't give consent, so Dr Lim left the room. I decided to just leave with the stitches being removed, and not get any more dental work done that day. I wasn't prepared for a root canal, having gone in expecting a mild day of fillings. Before I left, I expressed that my confidence was shaken by the fact that the two different dentists didn't agree on a single plan of action for what work was the highest priority. I have no doubt that I need a fair amount of work, but I wasn't happy with the first doctor's treatment plan being belittled by the second doctor. The front desk lady said she'd bring the issue to the head dentist, Dr Sanna, and ask him to prioritize dental work with the two doctor's differing plans in mind. She said she'd get back to me Monday (it was Friday). I left, and proceeded to have a full blown panic attack. No one from the dentist office called me to follow up on the issue. Not that Monday, or in the weeks after.

Great Dentist. No frills, no upselling, just clean, healthy teeth. 4.5 stars…read more I moved up to DC a few years ago and hadn't really found a dentist that I like... until now. Dr. Michael was kind, friendly, quiet, confident, comforting, and honest. His wife works the front desk and is lovely. For me, Dr. Michael did all the work himself (unlike a lot of dentists where the technician does the cleaning and the dentist just pokes around). He cleaned my teeth, did some flossing and polishing, said that he didn't see any cavities and that my teeth looked good. He could have easily made a quick profit off of me by doing unnecessary X-rays or "finding" something like "a cavity" or worse... but he didn't, and in the process earned a loyal customer (and another good review on yelp). The nicest part, I think, is that there are huge windows in the second floor exam rooms with a little bit of a view of some treetops, the sky, and the street-scene. That and the classical music playing in the background made it almost as relaxing and comfortable as a dentist visit can be. The waiting room is simple, neat and clean with some magazines provided, and rather than trashy Jerry Springer -esq daytime TV blaring, they have the aforementioned local classical music radio station playing. The sign-in/sign-up process was simple and straightforward (just one page of the usual info). Getting an appointment over the phone was easy. They take appointments Monday through Thursday. I have Aetna insurance (which they accept) and my checkup was therefore free. I think I walked out of the door less than an hour after I walked in. The office is located in the second floor of an apartment building, they'll buzz you up. The apartment lobby, elevator and hallway were probably the worst part of the experience (they're just not quite as comfortable and slick as some medical center lobbies), but that is largely outside of Dr. Michael's control. There is metered street parking on Connecticut or Nebraska and un-metered parking on the surrounding streets (but don't park on Connecticut during rush-hours). Right across Connecticut are Comet Ping-Pong Pizza and a great local bookshop called Politics and Prose. Overall, it was a great experience and Dr. Michael will be my new dentist while I live in DC, I would recommend him, but I would also recommend the following to get a 5 star rating: 1. The apartment building trash-shoot room is in the hallway near the dentist suite and smells a bit, this should be cleaned up, or at least air-freshened. 2. For first-time visitors, it would be nice to have a little more signage out front as it's not clear that the apartment building also houses a dentist office (which is a bit unusual for this suburban Florida kid - apparently is more common in cities). I wasn't sure I was in the right place. Also, some more modern and directional (with arrows and "second floor") signage inside would be helpful. 3. The cleaning/appointment was so painless that I almost wondered if my teeth were properly checked for cavities. My old dentists used to poke and prod and scrape my teeth seemingly as hard as they could to try to "find" cavities (or was it just to torture me?). That was usually the most painful and least comfortable part of the visit. There was a lot less of that during my visit, and I think I would have benefited from more explanation as to why. 4. A plain, simple, static website with a picture of the building, the office, the doctor, and some basic info would be helpful (which insurances are accepted, what days are appointments available, a link to this yelp page, how many years of experience Dr. Michael has, etc.). It doesn't need to be slick or fancy, a basic squarespace site or something would suffice, it could even say that their specialty is dentistry, not websites, that would be fine. 5. They should add coat racks in the exam room so that you can hang your coat/jacket/bag where you can see it, and not worry about your valuables (wallet, phone, etc.). But like I said above, it was an overall great experience, Dr. Michael will be my go-to dentist and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a new Dentist in the area.

I was lucky in that I never had any bad dental problems, but some in my family did, and Dr. Michael treated them well. He never tortured me. I guess that's a plus for a dentist. They are covered by a lot of different insurance. His office is clean...he's got good toothpaste and floss... I'm running out of things to discuss. The magazines in the waiting room are good? Not only thorough and knowledgeable, he's also friendly and really puts you at ease with his jovial sense of humor. It was also nice to not have a dentist trying to push lots of extras and services on me that I didn't want - like he evaluated the alignment of my teeth, perceived that I'd had braces in the past and possibly a retainer, and while giving me an honest assessment of how my top teeth are more evenly aligned than my bottom teeth, he didn't make a fuss about trying to convince me to get another retainer (as other dentists have tried to do). Honest, thorough, and not pushy - hard to find all of those qualities in a single dental practitioner these days. Dr. Davoudian did my tooth cleaning himself, and his dental assistant Mickey, who is also lovely and a total riot, did my x-rays.
