WATCH OUT: surprise bills! After establishing care and getting my teeth cleaned, I learned I needed to have a few cavities filled. When I scheduled the appointment, the front desk staff showed me an itemized bill for the fillings, including what my insurance would cover and what would be out-of-pocket costs. This was towards the end of 2025. The out-of-pocket costs were just over the remaining amount in my FSA, so I scheduled the procedure for the end of year. I was very happy with the fillings and paid my outstanding bill. A month later, I receive a notification for a bill over $500. Confused, I reviewed the services listed in my online portal and saw that all were listed as paid. I called the Brandywine office and was told that my insurance had not covered as much as they expected, despite Brandywine providing an itemized bill when I scheduled the service, and the cost for the error was now being passed on to me. They offered me a 12% discount, implying that this made up for their error. The most infuriating part is that if they had let me know up front that the itemized bill was just an estimate or that they were unsure about how much my insurance would cover, I could have delayed the fillings by 2 weeks and used my 2026 FSA to cover all of the costs. Instead, I ended up stuck with a surprise bill and minimal compassion about its impact. While I was happy with the dentist and dental hygienist, I am so put off by and frustrated with the front desk staff that I will not be returning. And based on many of the reviews, this sounds like common practice. Beware! read more

I would give it a pass - came to Dr. Schwart's practice to try to establish a new relationship with a dentist after not having one for some time. After three visits over a six-month period, I am moving on. The front desk staff is rude and unhelpful when scheduling appointments and less than transparent about billing (like, charge me $1900 out-of-pocket and not provide a detailed invoice until I insist, with follow-up email and phone calls). It also seemed like treatment decisions are made to maximize $$$ and the number of appointments, with no consideration for the patient's own schedule or budget. And, the hygienist has long, lovely hair that she does not pull back - will not miss that hanging over of my face during appointments. I gave them 5 stars in my first review 5 years ago, now I'll share my experience last Thursday and let you decide. I went for my 6 month cleaning and Tess (not the one who usually does them) cleaned my teeth. I thought it unusual that the afternoon/evening doctor would examine my teeth/mouth in the middle of cleaning. He asked me a few questions and said that everything looked great. Tess resumed my cleaning and my crown popped off. She apologized profusely and told the dentist who cemented it back. Before he cemented it back in, he gave an explanation of how what was originally done could've been done better to further secure the crown. I asked the cost and the person at the front desk looked at my insurance and said that even with it, it would be $1600. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, she shared that they can break them up into payments. I said that's still over $500 over a 3 month period!!!When he saw how annoyed I was, he agreed to cement it for now but to save so that the other procedure can be done. The crown fell in the floor and I'm not 100% certain that she rinsed it off. He asked her to but after she's left cotton in my mouth (he had to ask her to remove them). This wasn't Tess but another person assisting the dentist. It was clear she was in training because the person at the front desk was also appearing to be annoyed by her. The cleaning which should've been $10 with my insurance swelled to a $98 bill. My thing is this, how did we go from everything looks great to my crown popping off in its entirety, resulting in an eventual 1600 bill!?!? I hate to say it but it sounded like when they heard that I got a promotion, they thought they could get more money and when they saw my frustration and my refusal to pay an unexpected amount, they couldn't get me out the door fast enough. Either Tess didn't know what she was doing or it was intentional. Either way, no one should be experimenting in your mouth. I debated whether or not to send this, but this happened Thursday and it's still bothering me. I have an appointment in December but I have no intention of keeping the afternoon appointment. I will either move it to the AM or leave the practice all together. My hope is this will save others and if Dr. Schwartz wasn't aware, that he'll make adjustments regarding his current afternoon/evening team. read more

I first want to start off by saying that I have never written a review in my life on any business but after my experience with this Dental practice I found it would be ethically wrong of me to not share my experience and warn other people. I was a patient of Dr. Adam Schwartz about 4 years ago, I decided to leave this practice as a patient as I thought the way they were conducting business was ethically wrong... charging for all kinds of services that were not necessary. In may of 2021 I saw a dollar amount and invoice posted on my credit report thorough a collections agency, I never received a bill from the office and I had not been a patient in over 2 years at that time. I decided to pay the bill as Melissa the billing coordinator said it was for a past service, fine I paid the bill so that it would no longer affect my credit score. Fast forward to December 12th 2021, the same exact amount was posted again to my credit report now under a different collections agency and under Adam Schwartz himself. I called BrandyWine Dental care and asked why it was reported again after being paid. I was told that this was never paid and was yelled and then hung up on again by Melissa. After being yelled at by her and her telling me multiple times this bill was never paid I contacted tek collect as I know I had paid the bill. They said yes it was paid in full and sent me proof of payment in full. I am very concerned as this dentist office is still keeping my personal information on file and they are being fraudulent to the credit agencies by sending the same bill (to which they never sent an invoice to me) to different credit agencies hoping you pay the bill multiple times. In addition, tek collect told me they have a contract with BrandyWine and that they are able to see on their end whether a bill has been paid or not. Be aware of this dentist. read more

I wish I had read these reviews before I went to this practice. Everything that was said in these negative review are true. And after reading the positive reviews, which are all from 2 years and before, they are all about a dentist that is no longer there. They say they are in network but they do not follow the prescribed charges and they hide extra charges in their bills. I had a $225 extra charge for supplies. They definitely over charge. As for their service, they try and do all dental services trying to rake in as much money as possible, when really they should leave it to the specialist. I had 2 root canals done together. The procedure took a long time and and I felt that Dr Lomke was inexperienced and I wish I went to a Endodontist. Beware of this dentist! read more

I've seen 3 different dentists at Dr. Schwartz's office, and each gave me different advice on whether I needed to get my molars out. Separately, one dentist helped me with a cavity, but in doing so fused my teeth together and I had to come back in to get it fixed. Another dentist who I've seen 5+ times is not very kind to his assistants, and it's honestly awkward sitting in the room as he barks instructions at them. I asked about invisalign and they effectively administered the process, but they never told me that they used a different brand, which is fine but it would have been nice of them to mention. They are convenient, always on time, and have evening and weekend hours whic his helpful. read more

I'm SO thrilled with the care I've received at Brandywine! When I moved to DC 6 months ago, I was experiencing severe pain from my right upper tooth. My son highly recommended this office, and I was able to be seen right away. With the various high-tech scanning, x-ray, etc. equipment, Dr. Stangel was able to show me exactly what the issue was. I have had the bad tooth extracted, was given the option to see how I do without an implant, and was given detailed information on how much the implant would cost, and the process described in detail. I decided to go with the implant, and have also had teeth cleanings in the meantime. Dr. Schwartz was also very kind and professional when both dentists worked on me during a previous appointment. EVERYONE I have encountered there has been patient and kind, which is greatly appreciated because I have awful anxiety. No pressure, no "up selling" no surprises! Love this place! read more

Please avoid at all cost. His practice is called Brandywine Dental Care and it is basically an insurance milking operation. I went because it was very close to where I live. I called and double checked they accepted my insurance. They said they did. The whole appointment felt like an extremely pushy sales pitch with fear and intimidation tactics. The doctor claimed I needed extensive scaling and root planing for what he called very bad gum disease. He kept proding me and poking me and asking if it wasn't incredibly painful as a way to prove to me that I needed the treatment. He was so concerned about the state of my mouth that he advised forgoing the routine cleaning (coved in full by my insurance) and immediately starting the scaling. I declined. During the cleaning (which was actually just polishing and taking a full set of x-rays that I did not need because I had my less than a year old set sent from my old dentists' office) completely unprompted, the hygienist asked me why I still had my wisdom teeth and strongly suggested I needed to have them removed as soon as possible. I know this is incorrect because every single dentist I've been to (including my mother who is a dentist) has noted I am very lucky to have plenty of space for all of my wisdom teeth. When I flat out told her I knew that that was a lie and that it was incredibly inappropriate to suggest I have major surgery for no reason she didn't have an answer. When I confronted the doctor he brushed it off and she sheepishly said she was just making a suggestion she thought was in my best interest. When I fished the appointment the front desk claimed they didn't take my insurance even though I had called and double checked and they said they took it when I came in to register. They charged me $300 and said they were doing me a favor charging me a new patient 'deal price'. When I asked why I wasn't told they didn't take my insurance they claimed they didn't want to disturb me during my urgent treatment. I paid and immediately booked an appointment with a different dentist. The new dentist said my teeth and gums were in perfect shape and that I did not need any sort of periodontal treatment. He also confirmed I had no spacing, crowding, or any other sort of issue related to my wisdom teeth. He noted it was rare to see someone who had the space for all 32 teeth with no issues. When I called my mom to tell her about this, she laughed and said it is a very common way to basically scam the insurance company legally. The dentist claims you have a bunch of problems, preforms unnecessary procedures on you and milks the insurance company at your expense. I've been going here for 1.5 years now. This is a fantastic dental office. I can't say enough good things about the staff, my dental hygienist Evan and my dentist Dr. Ivan Stangel. The cleanings are thorough, they are good at finding problems that need to be addressed, they do a good job of keeping an eye on dental problems longitudinally, and they communicate their treatment recommendations in a very reasonable way. They use high-res cameras to photograph and track the progress of tooth lesions over time. They do not over-treat or over-charge. As a nice little plus, the toothbrushes you get at your biannual visits (along with floss, toothpaste and mouthwash) are actually quite nice. read more

I called the office to check to see if this office took my insurance. The lady on the phone told me "yes, we take all insurances." I went to my appointment and was told I had a problem with one tooth and needed a crown and they could do the crown in one day. When I went to check out, the front desk lady (same lady from the phone) told me they did not take my insurance because my insurance was "limited." I went home and I looked at my insurance to see where I could get a second opinion about the tooth needing a crown and discovered that there were 68 dentists in my ZIP Code alone that took my insurance, so it was most certainly not limited. Upon visiting Dr. Davoudian, I also learned I didn't need a crown yet and the tooth might heal. I would not recommend this dentist as he didn't seem to be trustworthy and cared more about making money than about my teeth. read more

I had almost the same experience as Megan T. The implication was that they "took" my insurance, but really that just meant they would file with my insurance and it would be processesd as out-of-network. This meant a difference of over a $1,000 in the cost to me for a crown. I know this isn't necessarily their responsibility to tell you, but it doesn't make you feel good about the practice, frankly. And honestly, it made me question the idea that I needed the crown at all. In a follow-up with a different dentist, he didn't rule out that I would need a crown eventually, but he suggested I wait a bit longer to see if the tooth would heal itself. He also adjusted my bite which the Dr. at Brandywine did not even look at. I did think the staff was very kind, I was able to get an appointment right away. They were helpful in having my xrays emailed to me, so I could use them again for the next dentist. I would not recommend them, especially if you have insurance that has an in-network option. read more

One mistake that is still costing me SEVEN years later. Dr. Schwarts slipped while filing between my front teeth - and kept slipping - so much that I now have a permanent gap in my right tooth that goes diagonally and is very visible. I have to have this mistake repaired every two years because it's very difficult to have the filler stick at such an awkward angle and it erodes with regular cleanings. So every couple of months I pay to fill the mistake that Dr. Schwarts made. As if that wasn't enough, when I complained about the problem and asked him to fix it, he wanted to charge me for the repair. Steer clear, if you need a dentist, I have a list of wonderful ones in the DC area that have been fixing me since 2011. read more

I have been going to Brandywine for about 6 years but this year I finally decided to change dentists. First of all, important advice I have for everyone going to Brandywine (especially if practice is out of network) is do not pay the bill prior to insurance working on the claim. Once the claim is completed, you will most likely see what was billed and how; if not (sure), check with your insurance (call and ask!) and then go to Brandywine with the information you received. Second, my experience: Brandywine dental care made me pay out of pocket for procedures and visits that should be covered by insurance (by billing wrongly). The reason I know they billed wrongly: although the practice is out of the network, my insurance claims that preventative services are covered regardless of whether the practice is in or out of network. After years of paying thousands of dollars for preventative cleanings out of pocket, I realized that my insurance was never charged for preventative cleanings --- I realized this because I had been having two cleanings a year, but my insurance report showed I had 0 of allowed 2 each year. Additionally, as many negative reviews before mentioned, there is this feeling that you are pretty much going to die if you don't decide for a treatment on your teeth as soon as possible. They freaked me out twice, but thankfully didn't decide to give in. They also made me come in for cleanings more regularly than needed. When I first visited my new dentist, he was very confused as to why I was having cleanings every three months as my gums looked in great shape. Also, the treatment that I should have already had two years ago (according to Brandywine) was mentioned at the new dentist as well, but the way it was presented it made so much sense and I didn't feel pressured into the procedure at all. Of course it also isn't as urgent as Brandywine presented. In summary, I would suggest to look for another dentist first if they are in your insurance but definitely do not decide for them if they are out of your network. read more

While the dental service itself is excellent, and their staff is very friendly and accommodating, their billing practices and transparency about relationships (or lack there of) with insurance companies is subpar. They will tell you that they take insurance like CareFirst, but really they are not within the network so they bill you partially up front and state that you should wait for insurance to reimburse you. Bills for remaining amounts pending with insurance companies as claims then go out with less than 30 days between notice and payment due given the "3 week" billing cycle they claim their invoicing company uses that they cannot change. While they do make exceptions if you call, this is just too much work and too inconvenient. They should just become a provider in network for major insurance companies. read more

I gave so many stars because everyone in the office was very nice. Was able to make an appointment easily. The hygienist was very nice, delicate, and did a great job cleaning my teeth. Dr. Schwartz was very nice as well. HOWEVER. I went in the summer and was told I needed 3 crowns because of deep cavities. At $1,700 each. Was odd because for such significant issues, I didn't have any pain at all. Because insurance only covered 50% of the cost, I looked into my employer plans and found if I changed insurance, I could be covered at 70%. In January I changed insurance but Brandywine didn't take the new one so I had to go to a new dentist. The new dentist took xrays and told me I didn't have a single cavity. He gave me a cleaning, a calendar, and sent me on my way. So much for needing $5,000 in dental work! Suddenly I feel like I went to an auto shop for a car wash and was told I needed a new transmission. Be very careful. read more

I have always been insecure about my teeth and my smile, so going to a new dentist is a really nerve-wracking experience. I try really hard to keep my teeth nice and healthy, but always end up getting scolded at the dentist for not brushing and flossing - I do! Dr. Schwartz and the staff I met didn't make me feel like my problem areas were my fault and they took an individualized approach when telling me what to do next. Since brushing and flossing haven't been sufficient for keeping my teeth and gums healthy - they suggested additional things I can do. It seems simple, but I was really blown away after so many bad experiences at the dentist's office. I will definitely be going back as long as I am in the area and will be sad if I ever move and have to find a new dentist. Also, I never felt like they were trying to push expensive procedures on me. They actually suggested less expensive options because they seemed like a better fit for my teeth. And hats off to Kim. Not only was my cleaning thorough and great in that way, her people skills are off the charts. She was incredibly kind and turned the music up to distract me, since she could tell I was a bit overwhelmed/nervous. All in all, I am incredibly satisfied with my experience. Brandywine Dental Care is five star-plus. I say this after decades of enduring the good (serviceable, meh!) the bad (downright incompetent) and the ugly (patient as cash cow). In truth, I was so disgusted with the bottom line dealing and general insensitivity (one dental service used pictures of my messed-up teeth in a public waiting room album) that I decided to write an expose' of the industry's move away from general health to patient as endless ATM. Then I found Brandywine and everything changed. I dropped the proposal to write a pull-no-punches expose'. Doing so for a full-time writer is no small thing. I view myself as a "professional patient" with life-long dental miseries. But thanks to Brandywine and Dr. Adam Schwartz, those miseries have ended and my dental health has improved 10-fold. While the Brandywine office is up to date as a newly minted star ship, the service is bottom line health-oriented. No gimmicks. No unnecessary "OMG, you're going to need $70,000 worth of work," which I encountered at several dental offices. Brandywine is equipped with a 3-D CT scanner and a Cerec unit that creates crowns and veneers in-house, saving patients the high costs of outsourcing. As for the human touch, l give Brandywine another five stars. As one who has gone through the highs and lows of service etiquette, I have found the "feel" of the office every bit caring as the professional treatments. If you are a paranoid patient, Brandywine may cure you of dentaphobia. If you are concerned about high costs (and who isn't?) Brandywine has a nifty in-house insurance plan that will make you smile. So if you're after dental care that is elegantly professional, cost conscious, and performed state-of-the-art, give Brandywine a try. It changed my life--and my smile. read more

This will sound a bit over-dramatic, but this dentist has truly changed my life. 5 years ago, I went here because a coupon for new patients appeared in my mailbox and I hadn't been to a dentist in 2 years. The office was within walking distance for me then and was easy to locate just off of Connecticut Avenue on Brandywine. The front desk staff were friendly and approachable, and have clearly been with the office for a long time. In fact, in the 5 years of going to this dentist, I have noticed minimal turnover; a good sign that folks are happy. The office is very clean. The hygienists have all been friendly and knowledgeable. They are thorough but gentle with cleanings and communicate with you so there are no surprises. They all work together like a team. I did have a few small cavities on my first visit. The dentist took care of them personally. There was no pain and it was a very easy experience. The dentist is very friendly and is also an excellent communicator. He is a younger guy, but clearly has a lot of experience and is a perfectionist, but with a healthy sense of humor. He feels genuine concern if there is any discomfort and he does his best to avoid it; not an easy task for a dentist. The staff was careful to schedule my next appointment for 6 months later at that visit, so it was easy to get into the habit of regular cleanings. They even have a set up to text and/or email you to confirm your next appointment. They have recently added Invisalign to their repetoire, and this is really how they've changed my life. They priced them affordably and have a few payment options so that this orthodontic treatment is doable, including a pay-in-full option that makes it easier overall. I want to point out that this treatment was never pushed on me, even though I definitely had crooked teeth. He is NOT a sales-centered dentist. I've never heard him push any cosmetic treatment on anyone. Not even your average whitening. He offers these things, but doesn't give you a big sales pitch. The Invisalign treatment requires a visit every 6 weeks, though it is often just to pick up the next set of liners, and this is included in the overall price, so it isn't costly. It has been much easier than I expected, and a lot of that is because he and his staff have been so friendly and concerned about how it is working. If you are one of those people that hates going to the dentist, or thinks they will try to sell you on things you don't need, give Adam Schwartz and his team a try. It is worth it. read more

I finally forced myself to find one and went with Brandywine Dental Care because they were located very close to my house. Kim, who did my cleaning, was awesome! She was incredibly warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. She showed me pictures of my teeth and went through any trouble areas with me, answering all the questions I had. Dr. Deckard was also great and addressed all of my concerns. Lastly, one of the office staff sat down with me and went through my insurance plan and payment options. First off I truly wish that I could give this dentistry office a lower review, but Yelp will not allow it. I will get straight to the awfulness that is Brandywine dentistry. The staff at this office overall pretty nice and my hygienist that I had was fine, but they seemed to be extremely overbooked running late for my appointment and I felt as if I didn't get the attention I deserved. The dentist that I saw was Dr. Schwartz. He was extremely brief rushing threw my appointment and I had a couple questions about my diagnosis, but he seemed to cut our conversation extremely short and I felt rushed out of the room. He did however say I could come back to talk about my treatment further, but it is hard for me to come back for another appointment. I was confused by this statement because I was already there why couldn't I talk to him then, especially because I was taken back a half hour late. Overall this was one of the worst dentist office I have ever been to and I highly recommend taking your business elsewhere. read more

Check the hidden reviews for this dentist. There is one with which I am in complete agreement. Dr. Schwartz is like a sly mechanic. He will ask you how long it has been since you've seen the dentist, and if it's been longer than 6 months..... woo you are about to be taken for a ride. The good Dr. told me I had developed SIX cavities in the 13 months since I had seen my old dentist in a different city. He was aware that I did not carry insurance. Cost me over $200 for them to attach a wire that they broke off during my cleaning. I was asked if I wanted it reattached and I said yes. It was not until after that Dr. Schwartz told me he was "only" going to charge me $250. He put so much bonding on that it pushed my bottom jaw back causing pain. I had to go back to have him file it down which cost me more money. AND I HAVE DENTAL INSURANCE! He wanted to charge me $500 for a big filling. I called other dentists and asked for prices on a big filling and they all thought $500 was ridiculous. read more

Our entire family has been treated to dental care by Dr. Schwartz. Everything about the practice is excellent. From the staff to Dr.Schwartz himself, the experience is always positive. The staff is always friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. They make an effort to know you and to treat you with respect and warmth during each visit. Dr. Schwartz is a great guy and a very knowledgeable and compassionate dentist. I just had a serious problem and was able to speak with Dr. Schwartz over the weekend and was fit into his schedule first thing Monday morning. He extracted a tooth and it went smoothly and effortlessly. After each procedure, we always receive follow-up calls to ensure that things are going well. Due to my poor experience with the financial advisor (hard inquiry on my credit without my permission, very rude, would interrupt calls and emails in an effort to make it impossible to speak with anyone other than her so that I couldn't obtain info about my visit or bill), I would not recommend this place to anyone. Dr. Stangel was very kind, but dealing with the office has been a nightmare for me and it's clear they prefer wealthy patients. On top of having to go elsewhere to repay someone to complete my treatment and being in pain for the last few weeks, I now have an $800 out of pocket bill. I'm an educated hardworking young adult but this was a very hard lesson learned for me and I still haven't forgiven myself for this poor choice (hard to think when you're in pain and pressured to make a decision). Please be careful. Ask lots of questions and say no to any treatment if you are out of network. read more

I have been going to Brandywine for a little over a year. Every experience at Brandywine has been pleasant. The dental hygienist, Kim and Evan are amazing!! I have only been seen by Dr. Deckard. She is very kind and takes the time to answer questions and explain things clearly. Everyone in the office is super friendly. They do a great job. I would highly recommend to others. read more
