I'm worried I'm going to get fat on delicious and environmentally responsible food from Dandelion Kitchen. Seriously, like I needed another grilled cheese in my life... buttered and toasted Salty Tart sourdough + melty local cheeses + sweet caramelized onions + a heap of cabbage/radish slaw on top. Trust in this. The line was about seven deep when Tori M., Julie S. and I arrived, and it didn't take long before we were biting into those serious sandwiches. I thoroughly lost my shit over the homemade basil-lime soda as well. It's just sweet enough, with a refreshing herbal tinge to it. There's something smoother about it than mint. I'm kinda obsessed with putting basil in drinks lately, so this is my ideal summer beverage. Also, Natalie is so nice. I finally stopped by the Dandelion Kitchen after walking past it for 3 summers in a row outside of my office. For lunch I ordered the Grilled Ham and Brie with housemade apricot mostarda and whole-grain mustard. I liked the ratio of ham to brie. I LOVED the perfectly toasted bread, by this I mean it was out of a cooking magazine perfection, it was light yet buttery and slightly crispy in all the right ways. I was not a fan of the mustard, I know I'm not a mustard person so I asked for light on the mustard and it was still overwhelming to the brie and ham for me. Also, for $9 I don't think I'll be back that soon. Any food truck is a splurge when you realize they don't have a building as overhead and you don't have a seat or table to enjoy your food at. read more

Hibicus ginger soda: whoa, ginger spice! Great! I came back other days and grabbed just a soda... I do wish we could use our own cups, but I understand that each area has its own silly regulations. The ham & brie is a very well-endowed sandwich. No skimping, even on the plump and juicy pears. Nicely wet and pliant cheese with thick slices of meat tucked between. Real butter toasted into the bread, coating your fingers with that fragrant, slightly sticky goodness and feeling so good twisting between your teeth. They seem a bit pricey, but it's not at all bad for the amount *and* being locally sourced. Somehow I was lucky and missed the long lines. Ok stuff. Cuban sandwich seemed about a buck pricey but for what was there it was full of flavor. The cool thing is that it seems like everything is being locally sourced so that's probably why things seemed on the high end price wise. The basil lime homemade soda was excellent and all I was thinking was that this needs a little vodka or gin. Is it worth trying? Yes but I will look at other trucks going forward. So I started this review right after lunch on my iPhone and then needed to wait to post it. Originally gave it four stars but it is a week later and I'm dropping it to three. Why? I never thought to try this food truck until my co-worker made me go one day. Normally located on Nicollet Mall outside of the IDS Center, the lines are long but the wait is worth it. Recommend getting there earlier in the lunch hour to make sure you get the food you are looking for. I highly recommend the goat cheese and beet salad, the vinagrette that goes with it is light and complements the cheese and beets well. I also like the grilled cheese sandwich and the hibiscus-ginger soda is a must try! Can't miss the truck, it's the only one in that area and it's bright yellow. read more

Had the grilled cheese here and it was too much to handle! The thick toasted bread was oily and crisp on the outside, and the three kinds of cheese were melted to an ooey gooey delicousness. What really gets me is the honey butter they use which just makes it such a rich sandwich! Because the sandwich is so rich, they serve it with a side of arugula and apple slices, and that sweetness from the honey was balanced out well by the bitterness of the arugula. At the recommendation of the hot sass that first reviewed this place (in the office next to me as speak~), we went today to continue my epic quest to try all the food carts. I had the grilled cheese with caramelized onions, which was flippin' tasty. I will have to add onions to all my GCs from now on. They provided a savory-sweetness to the cheese, which was light and flavorful. I also appreciated that they grilled it to my preferred perfection- crunchy outside but still nice and soft, not hard and crusty at all. The cabbage slaw was a nice mellow accompaniment, with subtle flavor and just-shredded juiciness. I also tried the basil lime soda... which is pretty much the best thing I've ever tasted. Very springy lime taste with a hint of savory basil... just perfect. If I could bring a little flask of Tanqueray Rangpur, I would... they'd be super happy together. They also epically win with their commitment to local foods, with local cheeses, local produce, and the seasonality of their ingredients makes me excited to try out what tasty things will no doubt be coming on the menu soon. read more

My favorite food truck downtown, and that's saying a lot since there are so many food trucks downtown. I love the BLT, they always use delicious tomatoes and that really makes a difference. I've also had the grilled cheese, which is decadent, indulgent, and more adult with the three cheeses they use. I think Brie is one of them? The fennel salad is also amazing with the roasted tomato vinaigrette, walnuts, and creamy goat cheese. Although I'm not vegetarian, I usually sub avocado for the chicken. read more

I was planning to have something else for lunch, but when I was walking through the skyway to the IDS Center I saw a bright yellow trailer sitting on the sidewalk. My attention thoroughly caught, I made my way down to the Dandelion Kitchen to find out what it was all about. Using 100% local ingredients, Dandelion Kitchen creates delectable dishes, it's a "mobile gourmet food truck" as they themselves say. Everything about this sun box of deliciousness is local, homegrown, organic, and handmade (except the trailer, of course!) and it is something they take pride in. Natalie Coleman and Alexander Brand have re-created dishes, inspired by their world travels, to awesome results. I ordered the Grilled Cheese which was "local cheeses on sourdough with caramelized onions, cabbage-fennel slaw." The sourdough bread was toasted perfectly and the cheese combination was enough to sate my dairy obsession, for now at least. At first, I was confused with the bizarre pairing of onions and grilled cheese. I don't like onions much, they make me gag and I avoid eating them. Seriously. I once fake-enjoyed an entire bowl of homemade onion soup so as not to embarrass the guy I was dating. It was...not enjoyable. But this sandwich was! The caramelized onions added a crunchy sweetness that I actually liked. Overall a great sandwich. Mayhaps my onion ex should have made a caramelized onion soup...? They also make their own sodas, which is mind-blowing, to me at least. I ordered the lemon ginger, which was just enough ginger without too much citrus. Even the plastic cup is organic, made from corn and 100% compostable! The service was quick, considering that everything is made to order on the spot. There is a grill in the yellow trailer. In the few minutes I was waiting for my sandwich they didn't shy away from talking with me and answering all my questions. I can tell they are engaged in what they do. All in all, Dandelion Kitchen is a "must-try" for everyone! I'm glad I happened upon it during my walk. I will have to make a return trip to experience the other things they have on the menu. Yummy yummy in my tummy. The chef salads are absolutely the best and that hibiscus ginger soda makes everything go down so smooth. I try to get to this food truck early since the line is insane, but the truck workers always have a smile on their face, which calms me down and gets me ready to eat. The chef salad, if you have not had it, is an explosion of flavor. Sometimes they have grapes, strawberries or pears as the fruit. The pistachios add a bit of crunch, while the goat-cheese brie add the perfect amount of "umami". Throw in some chicken salad, corn, capers, and actual mixed greens, and you are ready for a feast. I've had a lot of salads in the cities, and this one is absolutely brilliant and tantalizing. It would be nice to see them mix it up once in a while with the salad (and not just with the berries) so that I can see what other fun things they can do with veggies. read more

Street food at its finest. I've been hitting up the food trucks this year to spice up my mundane downtown work days, and the Dandelion Kitchen just skyrocketed to the top of my list. The BLT with avocado is so incredible, my words won't do it justice. Just go there and see for yourself. After the end of the season last year, Julie S and I met up at the Dandelion Kitchen for the final hoorah of the season. I dreamed all winter of their soups. Then on a chilly Thursday they were back! I ventured over this past week and was not disappointed. All that I dreamed about was true. I had the Ham & Brie grilled sandwich. It was perfect. The brie was melted with the ham warmed. Dandelion is back on the mall for season and my taste-buds couldn't be happier about the return of this trend-setting lunch cart! I usually opt for my usual- Dandelion's signature grilled cheese. Imagine a two cheese, sourdough sandwich topped with sweet caramelized onions and a tangy cabbage and fennel slaw. Is your mouth watering yet? However, this afternoon something inspired me to try another savory sandwich, The Ham Brie...prepare yourself to be deliciously distracted. Imagine taking a bite into a warm melt- the salty ham and perfectly grainy hot mustard are the first flavors to hit your tongue. Next, your teeth sink through soft slices of pear, perfectly tangy arugula while the bite becomes enveloped in the creaminess of the sour brie. Did I mention that they make they're own sodas? The other Friday I made a visit to Dandelion Kitchen, a food truck so blindingly yellow that it's impossible to miss. The mission of the Dandelion Kitchen: to use only organic, in-season produce from local family establishments for creative new takes on Midwestern staples like grilled cheese and BLTs. The lunchtime foodie looking for a quick, fresh gourmet fix will not be disappointed by a visit to the Dandelion Kitchen. When it was my turn to order, the helpful woman at the counter told me that the BLT ($7.50) is probably the most popular item on the menu, and recommended I get it on crusty baguette rather than soft bread. I handed her a tenner for that and my soda, and she handed me a glass of ice to pour my own hibiscus ginger soda ($2.50) from the tap next to the window. Cute! Service They were friendly and clearly having a blast; once I ordered, it only took about a minute to get my sandwich. Presentation The sandwich is served wrapped in a cheery little yellow paper bag, and I found the pour-your-own-soda station charming. Taste I'm still drooling just thinking about that thick, sweet and salty bacon... Value for Dollars I mean, it's good, but it is just a sandwich and a soda for $10! It's official. Dandelion Kitchen has popped my food truck cherry and....it wasn't as earth-shattering as I was hoping for. I'm not sure why I was expecting my trip to Dandelion Kitchen to be life-changing (maybe it was all the 5 star reviews) but my expectations were through the roof. We showed up around 1 pm and the line was 10+ people long. Seriously popular. The gals working the window weren't exactly rays of sunshine but maybe that was the stress of getting all that food out in a timely manner. The sandwich I'd wanted to try had run out so I got the grilled cheese instead along with a lemon-basil soda. The soda was solid, totally get the reviews for that. It was a bit sweet for my personal tastes but it's freakin' soda. What did I expect? And the grilled cheese. Never in my life did I think I'd say this about ANYTHING but there was too. much. cheese. The bread was coated in honey butter (fantastic idea!) but overall it was waaay too rich. I wish they'd had the caramelized onions in there but after looking at their website, seems they only do that at market locations. That would have been the perfect way to counter the mouthfuls of pure cheese. Love the fact that they use local ingredients! I'm sure I'll stop by again to try something else. I should like Dandelion Kitchen more than I do. They do great things with their food and come up with really unique combinations, but every time I've been (granted, only a few times) I've waited for a really long time and anticipated a fantastic meal only to be left feeling ehhhh. The lime basil drink, now that's amazingly refreshing. Unexpected and unique. Four stars for that. The grilled cheese (with apples and honey butter) should have been a home run, but wasn't. So for Dandelion Kitchen, you just need to remember two words: grilled cheese. It's AMAZING -- three cheeses AND honey butter with apple slaw on the side? Shut the front door. Add a homemade soda to that (I especially love the hibiscus-ginger) and you've got the best lunch downtown. My only complaint w/ DK is the french bread for some of their other sandwiches. It's seriously so hard that my jaw hurt from eating it. They also have an option to get brioche-style bread, but sometimes I just want my basic baguette. read more

I chose the worst day/time to try this place, noon o'clock on Thursday. Why! I must have waited in line for 20 minutes before I put in my order and another 5 for them to prep my grilled cheese sandwich. I got the grilled cheese sandwich with slaw plus their homemade lemon ginger pop. I must admit it was quite bland, although the caramelized onions were a nice touch. This summer I decided it's in my best interest to hit up the food trucks. Dandelion Kitchen was my first stop and I was not disappointed. There was a wait, of course, but it wasn't bad (hit 'em up before or after the standard lunch hour). I decided to try the grilled cheese and signature basil-lime soda. First, the soda was incredible! The sandwich wasn't bad. Excellent cheese and good-quality bread; my only issue was that it was over-grilled and very hard to bite into. The roof of my mouth was not pleased. Slaw was tasty, as were the onions, but I think it would have been better if they were in the sandwich instead of on top. I'll definitely be trying Dandelion Kitchen again. I love the grilled cheese and slaw (I am going to see if they will put my onions inside for me next time to make it a little easier to eat). Even better, the BLT with maple bacon and avocado! Even better than that, the homemade basil lime soda! I still need to try the chicken sandwich, but I keep getting the other two because they are so darn tasty. The only thing that wasn't a total win was the side salad. Delicious field greens with radishes and beets. The scent of the dressing elicited reactions from every co-worker near my desk though, so it has been banned. Boo. I'll just bring a different dressing though. Absolutely amazing. There is a reason that the line for this food truck can be upwards of 10-15 people at a time during lunch rush. The food is fantastic, I got the grilled cheese which was anything but an ordinary cheese sandwich, and a glass of housemade hibiscus ginger soda. Both were out of this world. I have also tried their chicken salad sandwich (that includes almonds, dried cherries, capers and tomato jam) which was the some of the best chicken salad I have ever tasted. Seriously do yourself a favor and check out their menu online or drop by the truck itself. You won't regret it! Just come early or be prepared to wait for some amazing food! I ate here back in August and meant to review it then, I almost forgot! I can see that so far the reviews are unanimously in five-star favor for Dandelion, which is very much deserved. I had their mozzarella and tomato sandwich (with their own homemade pesto), and it was phenomenal. It kind of started to fall apart, but that was my own fault for not sitting down to eat (took one bite just to try it on my way back to my office, and couldn't stop). Definitely mark this down for next summer if you work downtown! You can't miss them out on Nicollet Mall. Locally sourced ingredients and very reasonable prices are a huge bonus. read more

I decided I had to try the Dandelion Kitchen after weeks of witnessing line after line of customers. I decided on the Roast Chicken Sandwich, the house-made apple chutney and greens appealed to me. After the 20+ wait in line, the sandwich did come out relatively quick considering the line. However, the sandwich comes in a baguette that was entirely too hard. My jaw started to hurt biting into it. The taste was great, but I felt the bread should have been softer or of a differnet kind, perhaps flatbread. Hours later I messaged my friend asking if her jaw hurt, and like mine, hers did as well. I'm still curious to try their other menu options, as long as the line is short! ;) read more

Got lunch here for the first time today! It was windy and cold during the not-too-long-wait, but it was worth it! I had the soup, salad, grilled cheese, and soda. I was quite hungry. The soup was carrot ginger - a really pretty color and a nice bite of ginger. The salad is beet, toasted pecans and pears and I actually haven't eaten it yet, I was so full from the other items! The grilled cheese was delicious, thick and gooey. Covered in slaw and carmelized onions. I would kind of prefer the onions inside the sandwich, but the taste was great either way. Their menu is mostly sandwiches with a soup and a salad or two as well as homemade sodas. They do have some vegetarian options. I opted for the chicken sandwich with blue cheese, apple chutney and a tasty mustard all on a mini baguette. Now I gotta mention the baguette was HARD - like the kind that feels like it's gonna cut the roof of your mouth... Eat this sandwich in private so you can rip it apart with your teeth and not feel bad about it. Overall the flavor was delish. Price was around $6. They have chips you can purchase separately too. Next time I'll try the ham and brie or the grilled cheese. I've heard amazing things about both as well as those homemade sodas - yum! read more

Great customer service and delicious food. I was walking to meet a friend for lunch downtown and passed the Dandelion Kitchen food cart. As I ordered I realized they didn't take cards and I was short a dollar in cash. The person taking my order told me not to worry and just pay next time I ordered. I did stop by later that day to pay and I thought that was awesome customer service. My cheese sandwich was delicious and I really appreciate that they use organic food when possible. The coleslaw was also great! Too bad they can't stay open during the cold months! I look forward to their return in the spring. read more

I have been to Dandelion Kitchen before and loved it. Today though may make me not go back. I waited 20 minutes in line to order, I ordered the Chef Salad with Chicken Salad for 8.50, and I added a tip. I then waited 12 minutes to get my salad. The first thing I noticed was that it had roast chicken on it not chicken salad, but as I had already been gone so long from work, I decided no big deal. It wasn't until I sat down at my desk that I realized I had been given the completely wrong salad. I got the beet and blue cheese salad. This is extremely frustrating, but I figured at least it will taste good. Looking closer, there were two miniscule pieces of chicken, two sliced beets and a sprinkle of blue cheese, and about a million pounds of lettuce. Even if this had been what I ordered, I would not have been pleased. Not for 9.50. I am annoyed that I have to tip before I even know if I liked the service, which I did not. There are enough food trucks in Minneapolis that I don't think I need to return to this one. read more
