Dance works has very very talented and qualified teachers. I went as a beginner to Beginners Hip Hop, K-Pop, and Calming Contemporary and I felt welcome by every instructor. I am seriously so grateful to have this studio in the city. It's affordable, it has a sweet sense of community, and it's so much fun. There is a parking lot which is major and it's kind of confusing because some of the parking is for the apartments connected but I've parked closest to the entrance of the studio and never had an issue. My husband and I started taking the Saturday morning adult ballet classes this past year. I used to dance as a child and it's great to get back into it. It's beginner friendly and my husband has never danced before but enjoys the class as well. People go to the class with different goals and levels (some for medical reasons, some used-to-be-dancers, some just using it as workout class). It's great and the teacher is very supportive, she explains the moves and helps you out while understanding everyone is on a different level. We love feeling strong and flexible after attending the class for a couple weeks. read more

We attended one of the summer series one-session classes and it was a lot of fun. They have the adult summer series on specific Fridays and we tried out the salsa one. It's pretty cool because it's done outside (weather permitting) right there by the river. Also, there is a beverage included. If you sign up as a pair/couple, it's $35, and it's a really nice summer activity. Awesome instructor and an overall great opportunity to shake it to the best of your abilities. read more

We took a social dance class here and it was a blast! The instructor was great as was the space. They have some great offerings but their pricing is a bit high. I would really love to see them bring Doonya or a Bollywood style of dance, or even some line dancing. With us coming out of the pandemic it would be really fun to have a couples night out with some line dance or social dance lessons and maybe a few drinks, they have a wonderful outdoor space to do so in the summer. I think there is great opportunity to expand their adult program. We're looking forward to taking another class when our schedules allow! read more

My husband and I took dancing lessons here for our wedding this past summer and we had a blast. The teacher we worked with took it really slow (we are NOT dancers) and made it so relaxed and fun. We still do our dance in our living room from time to time so we don't forget it. It helped us enter the reception with far more confidence and even though some schedule mishaps made our dance a little less on display we had a blast doing it and taking the lessons together. read more

Danceworks is a wonderful non-profit dance organization that does some pretty cool stuff for the community like their Mad Hot Ballroom (kids ballroom) and Mad Hot Tap programs. They are also a dance company and offers performances, as well as a school that offers a pretty fantastic range of classes for both kids and adults. I've taken adult ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, tap, African and ballroom dance classes at Danceworks. They also offer some fitness based classes like Zumba and Barre Workout classes as well. This org hosts a great variety of classes and has so many performance opportunities for both professional and developing dancers. I would recommend a regular end of session survey for regular attendees to be able to review the class and instructor in order to help develop newer teachers and to understand what clients are expecting or looking for from the class. One area of improvement would be better follow up from staff. Sometimes it takes more than one or two attempts to hear back regarding an inquiry. Overall I am very happy with Danceworks, an important local institution here in Milwaukee for the arts, education, culture, youth development and adult enrichment. Excellent professional dance troupe with innovative modern, jazz and mixed genre performances. Within the organization is a semi-professional subset of younger dancers, and the studio also gives dance lessons and hosts some intriguing guest performances. The re-purposed industrial space is attractive post-modern, but the folding chairs are a tad uncomfortable if you're an overweight middle aged man with chronic lower back pain. Otherwise the lighting, sound and stage design are excellent (by stage, I mean the flexible dance floor area level with the audience, the space is well set up for the audience to see). There's no coat check, so you might want to consider leaving heavy coats in the car. You save a little money buying your tickets online before the show, though the tickets aren't expensive considering the high artistic quality on stage. It's a small venue and every time I've been here it was close to sold out so buying ahead of time is a good idea. Driving by on Water Street, the place is easy to find, but the entrance is a bit baffling at first. The streetside is actually the back of the place, walk around and enter from the west side, through what looks like an alley in the parking lot between the buildings. read more

Ok I need to start this with the following: If it was an option I would give this place a 3.5 but since its not I really didnt have a "good" enough experience to rate it a 4 or harder. Before I go into details about why I need you to know I only took 1 class they offered today and I do plan on taking more different ones in the future and updating at those times. Let the review commence. Ok So! Danceworks offered a unique opportunity to the people of the mil-wa-ukee offered 1 day of free classes. They where to showcase the Fall dance collections they where selling the dance lessons for. So that Is awesome right off the bat I would rate a 4 because that's great giving a free opportunity to generate business and give some small free culture to willing participants. So me and 1 of my lady friends dropped in to take the Bhangra aerobics dance. It's basically bollywood dancing. So we arrive 15 minutes early which is fine they had some nice grapes and water for people waiting. Still holding steady at the 4. Here's when the stars start to drop... All of us dancing dandies where allowed to enter the studio space. I could tell right away the instructor was nervous. So at the beginning of the class the instructor told us that he was a not a trained instructor and hasnt done this particular dance set in over 4 years. Yikes! a non certified instructor training new basic ..newbees? that can be dangerous no wonder we had to sign those " you release this studio from all liability in case of injury" before the class. Ok so drop some star points just seems irresponsible. Next: So he says we are doing a warm up the warm up never came that is unless you count the ok roll your shoulders and head 3 times ok great let the cardio begin. Still he's new maybe i'll give this guy and the studio benefit of a doubt and say maybe he is learning to get his permit? anyway moving along. 20 minutes into this we are jumping around stomping are feet and generally bouncing around. Now i take yoga several times a week and i knew that allott of this wasnt good for your joints knees or back so i didnt push it but heres the kicker. There was NO disclosure or warning that this class was not meant for people with joint, back problems etc. anyway so 20 minutes in and than the guy says oh yeah if you have a bad back, joint problems etc this is awful for you... OK again at this point yes common sense says you should know but the studio has at least a bare minimum of 50% responsibility of disclosure on things like this and the moves we did int his class i can confidently say you should have strength training behind. The class was just to intense without basic background 45 minutes / hour of intense cardio, and all leg, knee, ankle strength. SO my over all experience was that slightly disappointed. i am thankful for the opportunity i just felt like allot of things got lost along the way. I didnt walk away with a sour taste in my mouth but i also didnt walk away excited to come back or really feel the need to try again. But i will if more free days arise i will come and try a different class and hope maybe i have a much more satisfying experience. So yep. 3 stars not great not bad just kinda meh. read more

My experience: I took a 12-week session of the beginning hip hop class with Sam on Tuesday nights. Everyone in the class always loved the routines we would learn each week - and Sam is an awesome, enthusiastic instructor. Facility: There are two rooms/studios - the larger one is big enough even for a packed (~20-person) class. Parking by the studio has never been an issue for me. Price: so-so. I believe I paid ~$17/class, which is a few dollars higher than what I have found in other large cities. Not a dealbreaker, though. What's offered: Danceworks offers a variety of children's and adult classes. I cannot speak directly to anything besides the hip hop class - but I would, however, recommend trying any of the classes offered! read more

The ballet class lacked structure and definitely pricey for what is was ($15). During the stretching the teacher didn't lead us and overall the class felt more like an average community recreation class. I will not return. read more

I am so impressed by the classes at Danceworks. I'm currently taking the Barre class, and I love this no-impact, but high intensity workout. The instructor, Kim, is outstanding. She is part teacher, part coach, and all dancer. She is encouraging, she provides non-intimidating opportunities to challenge yourself, and she always checks in to make sure you are aligned so you don't hurt yourself. It's also wonderfully choreographed with great music, so even though it is challenging, it is a lot of fun. If you are like me and don't have a dance background, I would recommend having an athletic background, and/or level 2 yoga experience. read more
