We had a lunch meeting with John and his wife Cindy and immediately clicked. They were incredibly personable, had all sorts of templates to help with planning, and were quick to give recommendations when we were walking through the music we liked. Our playlist was pretty eclectic and John did a great job making it flow and getting the crowd going. John and Cindy were very on top of all communication and super helpful in figuring out tiny details. They jumped in to help us plan a mother-son polka that was a big hit. They even took special care to play certain songs in honor of my parents, who have passed away, at specific points in the night. They also get MASSIVE points for playing the Dropkick Murphys and Sweet Caroline without being asked - my big Boston family loved it! John was even kind enough to help our friends playing the ceremony and cocktail hour with their equipment, and act as an MC throughout the night. We've used John from Dance Syndicate Entertainment for countless company events over the years (holiday parties, retirement parties, employee appreciation events, etc). Not only is he on time, organized, and punctual, he really knows how to get a crowd dancing. It really makes it more fun your DJ/MC actually gets on the dance floor to do the electric slide!! My only regret is not using his services for when I got married last year. My husband and I decided on price over quality, and we kind of paid the price at our wedding reception (the vendor we went with was all promises, but did not follow through). Please know that when you book with Dance Syndicate, you are getting the best quality for the price you pay. There are a lot of "value" companies that can get you a steep cheap price, but what you sacrifice is quality. We simply provided the list of songs that we wanted for each point of the wedding. Since we are major micromanager, husband and I sat down one evening going through our entire music libraries and listed on a word doc what we wanted played during ceremony and reception. Every single song. And you know what? On the day of, John was great! When I somehow got tricked into running our high school's 40-year reunion party, I needed to make it easy on myself and went with professionals I could count on who wouldn't need much direction. John Villa had been DJ at our 25th wedding anniversary in 2009 and I knew he'd do a great job again. He and Mark did just that. I only offered a few song suggestions and then left it up to him to program it. On event day, the music was the one thing I didn't need to worry about: they arrived before I did and were already setting up, they helped with some of our equipment issues and offered a couple of ideas for announcements and games. It is tough to organize a big party and it is really nice when you know one part of it will go smoothly without needing constant attention and direction. Boy I can't say enough good things about John. I found him to be very tentative to our needs. He always responded to our e-mails. Had great answers for all our questions. Had great advice when we weren't sure what to do. He gave us a worksheet to fill out so he knew what to play all thru the evening. He worked very hard setting up and breaking down his equipment, but would always stop what he was doing to talk to me when I had questions. I found him very easy to talk to. He arrived 7 hours before the ceremony to set up two systems. One for ceremony and one for reception. And install uplighting all around the room. My wife and I got married on October 1, 2016 at Castle Green in Pasadena, CA and needed a DJ for our event. We interviewed several vendors but never fit what we need because they were either: too expensive, not responsive and late, or their styles seem fake (throwing in a fake English accent when they lived in America since they were born). We ended up interviewing John Villa, a friend's friend for the gig. Not only did he offer DJing our event, he also was able to offer us lighting, and be our officiant as well (he was ordained in California)! So he was a one stop shop to take care of 3 things at once! So when we did the interview, we realized he was just as sarcastic and had a sick sense of humor like my wife and myself. It made conversation much easier and comfortable that we could talk about cupping each other balls (I have no idea how that got in the conversation). That being put aside, he is also a perfectionist like myself and wants to know detail by detail, line by line, about everything. He also acted similar to a wedding coordinator and has great ideas on how to make everything flow seamless. For example, we ended up doing a grand entrance for the bridal party as well as the bride and groom. Rather than going back to our seats, he had us stay there, do a group photo (as he mentioned that most of the time you don't get good pictures after the ceremony cause everyone is doing their own thing), and then shoot to the first dance as all the gusts have already been seated and facing the dance floor. This is just ONE example of the tricks of his sleeve to make things seamless. He went along with everything we had to say. He had great opinions on certain things but we didn't use all of them. But since we had a Vietnamese wedding with Vietnamese names, he learned the names with us (btw, he's not Vietnamese) and did a great job of learning them. We wanted to roast our bridal party and he helped us put together jokes that caught everyone off guard and was hilarious when the bridal party did their grand entrance. He took charge when he needed to and regulated the crowd as sometimes, they would not listen to our coordinators. The songs he played were fun and everyone went on dancing the rest of the night without skipping a beat. Besides the DJing part, the lighting he did was spectacular. It gave our ballroom a unique glow and was gorgeous. He set our gobo on the dance floor perfectly. Speaking of which, we had a very detailed GOBO design which he took care of and paid for and didn't want to bother us until after all of our wedding was over. Same with the mic rentals for our 4 singers/MCs. He initially wasn't even going to charge us but I couldn't let him do that. We had a blast and so did our guests. John was very professional, communicated with us in a timely manner, and is fun to work with. Although you may be swayed away because of his rape van, I'm sure that's just to store his equipment and not little children. We plan on hiring him for any anniversaries or events and actually we all became friends. read more

It's unfortunate to be the one giving the first negative review but there's no way to sugar coat this, I regret hiring John for our wedding. He was our worst vendor decision and it will be a long time before I can get over this. My wedding was the most boring, lamest party I've ever been to and I've cried every single day for a week after. He was on my coordinator's list of recommended vendors and after this event he is definitely off that list. From the beginning he was extremely unresponsive to emails, we should have dropped him from the start when that happened but the fact that our coordinator spoke highly of him and his package came with a Spanish speaking MC made us stick with him because the Spanish speaking part was very important to us. We also got our lighting through him and it turned out great however that was about the only positive thing. He messed up nearly everything else. - On the day of, he texted me for my parents' dance song. Really?! That was the third time I told him. - For the grand entrance he was supposed to play our first dance song as soon as we were announced and were walking out, we discussed this at our final meeting. Instead, we received a long and loud verbal grand entrance intro with applause and by the time we got to the middle of the dance floor we were panicked and sweating bullets because the song had not started and we should have already been dancing by then. We had to wing it and improvise and fortunately it went well but that was so stressful. Then in the middle of the song, I'm supposed to be handed off to my father and this was supposed to go along with a lyric in the song but instead we had John blaring an announcement that we are now doing a father and daughter dance. What was supposed to be elegant and sweet ended up being a big cheese fest. - He brought that additional MC that spoke Spanish but I kept forgetting he was there because he barely spoke and when he did, it was mumbled English. Completely useless. - From the start we emphasized table games because our guests were so diverse and our families don't know one another but none of that happened. Perhaps it was later in the timeline I don't know, but you know what? As a DJ, you're supposed to sense the vibe and adjust accordingly so when people are fleeing the wedding do something!! - He announced the clinking of glasses thing that would signal for us to kiss. I SPECIFICALLY sent an email to him telling him NOT to do that. I even asked him to reply to confirm which of course he did not. - He kept playing a lot of swing and I remember saying to someone, "Why does he keep playing swing??" My husband and I love funk, soul and early 90s hiphop, in fact we had met through street dance. We had a short playlist but he knew our background and made us feel like he knew what we're about and that he's got it covered so I gave him the freedom to do what he wants with the playlist but that didn't mean to mostly ignore it and play swing and oldies music. I completely felt it was our parents' wedding, they absolutely loved it all. - During cake cutting we were encouraged to smash cake in each other's faces. We think cake smashing is incredibly rude and a very dumb tradition. We stood there for a long time refusing to do it while the crowd stood around us chanting and waiting for us to smash cake. It was extremely uncomfortable and awkward and I was raging inside. I had no idea this was going to happen and I wish he should've discussed this with us prior! It took me two days process everything because I wasn't able to verbalize it yet. By mid week I finally admitted I hated my wedding and bawled every day. I am so embarrassed, ashamed, and mortified. My cousin who took great pains to bring his entire family from NYC admitted to me later that "yeah the DJ sucked" so he just drank more instead. I'm horrified, that's something you never want to hear from your wedding guest, especially from a family member that you haven't seen in years who spent money he didn't have just to be there for your wedding. A lot of little things went wrong with this wedding as happens with all weddings and they were minor and forgetful, but this was on a whole other level of wrong. We regret the extra tip we gave him. We handed our tip envelopes to our coordinator at the beginning and John was the only one we gave extra because of the additional MC plus we had expected an epic party but it was a complete letdown. It was hard for me to act like a happy bride all night because it would make my mom sad/angry if I did not but I played the part and kept smiling throughout the night although I was angry and supremely bored with the music. He got his money and we got painful memories. read more
