We participated in the Creative Movement class for about five months. Unfortunately, a number of issues led us to end our time there.
1. Class Structure
The teacher did not provide practical tools to help the children learn. For example, she would ask if anyone knew the names of certain movements without taking the proper time to teach them in the first place. There was little effort put toward actively supporting the children's development, which left several parents, including myself, supplementing instruction outside of class.
2. New Rules & Classroom Environment
The main reason we stopped attending was how new "rules" were introduced. I often attended with my son and infant to watch my daughter. One day, in the middle of class, the teacher stopped instruction, looked over at me, and asked to speak with me. She mentioned that my children were "very cute" but suggested my son should go downstairs instead of being nearby. At the time, my children were playing quietly, and other parents later told me they also noticed her repeatedly looking in my direction. Another child in class was louder than mine but was never approached.
The following week, I walked into class and saw a new sign posted with rules (attached in comments). I spoke with Laura before class to explain that it felt uncomfortable to be singled out, especially when other children were making noise as well. I also noted that it would have been helpful to see those expectations before enrolling. Her response was dismissive and she quickly ended the conversation by saying it was time to start class.
3. Professionalism & Value
Overall, the setting is a recreation center where families are allowed and expected to watch. The teacher's lack of professionalism and her approach to handling issues did not match what I would expect from someone with significant experience "in the business." Ultimately, we felt that paying $65 per month was not worth it, as the class resembled more of a social hour than a structured learning experience.
I have attached the contract she has all new members sign as well as the sign of new rules put out during our time there. read more
