I hired Williams & Kunkle to file the taxes for my deceased sister's estate for 2021. I paid $1000…read morefor this service for a relatively small estate. They completed the forms and told me to mail them to the IRS. I did so only to find out later that that will take nearly a year to receive the refund. Well, here it is, 2024...2 years later and the estate is no closer to receiving the refund than it was in March of 2022. After numerous communications with the IRS, we recently learned that the Social Security number that the Williams & Kunkle CPA used was incorrect. At this point, there seems to be little chance of resolving all of the problems this mistake has caused. Needless to say, I made a major mistake involving this firm in settling my sister's estate taxes.

Dear Scott Kunkel,…read more I'm not interested in any further communication with you or your partner Beth, whose yelp account you're using, probably just like I used my one and only yelp account to leave a review about how frustrating it was to try to discuss doing business with your company. When I called the second time, I was already a little frustrated by no one returning my call, so being interrogated by the person who took my second call and then being asked to disclose privileged personal information was also annoying. Then I found out I would have to wait another week to find out more about your company. This entire interaction could have gone very differently had you or Beth been available to talk at any point on the day I called or the next. Instead of letting me know it would be another week before I could speak to anyone to find out more about your company. The experience left me with the impression that you and your company don't really care about the needs of my company and maybe that works for you, it doesn't for me. Best regards, William Vehon

It was obvious after waiting 6 months, that she was in over her head. After the first few months, she doubled her fees and still never met our agreed upon deadlines for getting our business books ready for tax preparations. We had to let her go and then we had to hire another accounting firm to help fix her mistakes. We have spent over $2500 to "undo" what she did. We have also spend over 100 hours of our personal time, going through our accounts on Quickbooks to fix it. It is so difficult to undo reconciliations and try and fix things that are classified wrong and reconciled wrong on QB. This has been a nightmare. We even brought this to Lee's attention when we realized Jill was unable to complete this job, and we were not refunded nor were we offered someone else in his firm to fix her mistakes. We were very disappointed with her lack of training and her inability to complete the job she agreed to do and was paid to complete. This is a warning to please be careful when hiring her. She is not qualified to handle small businesses on Quickbooks online.

Avoid this tax preparer at all costs. My experience with Michael Powell, CPA, was a disaster from…read morestart to finish -- in fact, one of the most bizarre experiences I've ever had. I filed my 2024 taxes with him. After I filled out all the information, I signed my return on March 22 and paid him. He confirmed that all the information was correct and told me he would file my taxes ASAP. Despite that, I began receiving tax non-payment notices from both the IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue. In 43 years of filing taxes, I have never once been late. When I contacted Mr. Powell, he was dismissive and uncooperative, then finally admitted he had not filed my 2024 returns until the end of June -- months late. Shockingly, he did not seem concerned about his failure. If there's one date a tax preparer should never forget, it's April 15. He clearly could not have cared less. I followed up with a formal demand letter to document this call and his admission. When he finally responded, he claimed he had written letters to the IRS and Arizona tax authorities admitting fault and promised to work with them directly to cover my penalties. But this never happened. Deadlines came and went while he did nothing. I had no choice but to spend hours on the phone and over email with both agencies myself. Eventually, I paid the penalties out of pocket and sent him proof of payment along with a second demand letter asking for reimbursement -- including the filing fee he charged me for a return he filed late. At one point, he even claimed he had filed an extension -- something I later confirmed was false, and which he had no legal right to do without my permission. This is unacceptable behavior from any CPA. Under IRS Circular 230 (31 C.F.R. Part 10), tax professionals have a duty of competence and due diligence in preparing and filing returns. Failing to file on time and misrepresenting the status of an extension is a direct violation of those duties. Additionally, under Arizona Revised Statutes §32-741 and §32-746, a CPA is required to exercise integrity, objectivity, and due professional care -- standards Mr. Powell clearly ignored. I did everything required of me -- I signed my return in March, paid him, and trusted him to file -- yet he failed to do so. His lack of professionalism, honesty, and accountability caused me financial loss, wasted time, and needless stress. I have since contacted the appropriate authorities to request that his license be revoked. My advice is simple: stay away from this CPA. Don't risk becoming the next victim of his negligence.
