We arrived around 400 PM and were quickly greeted and seated. Our waitress was friendly and a fantastic waitress. We had onion rings appetizer, wife had a Jucy Lucy, and I had a steak sandwich. She had a Miller Lite draft and I had a Budweiser draft. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. Portion sizes were strong. Waitress couldn't have been nicer and either the manager/owner stopped by three different times and talked to us about a repeat customer program they have in place. A very nice guy. This is definitely a locals favorite but we were welcomed in! There isn't anything fancy about the Cardinal Tavern but if you are looking for good food in a friendly environment, stop by. So here we are, 38th and Hiawatha. Not a lot has changed over the years, except maybe more selections on tap. walking in from the corner door takes you into a dimly light bar with enough to seat about 10 to 12 patrons. You will also notice there is tons of seating options in the bar and into the second room. Further back you will find the game room with a bunch of pool tables and a couple dart boards for the gaming folks. The vibe in here is typical neighborhood bar, it is relaxed, the patrons are just your regular easy going folks, and you can easily chat up folks here...maybe discover a new drinking buddy! We came in to do a little day drinking, play some pull-tabs and eat some food. First and foremost, winning a couple hundred in pull-tabs already makes this a fun place to hang...actually it would have been fun regardless. The food fare is your standard bar food, however they do serve breakfast, and the entrees I saw people woofing down, I'd hit this place up for breakfast. We opted to order the pork tenderloin and the sour cream and onion burger. Both were served on toast; the tenderloin on whole wheat with pickles and onions (you need to ask for onions) with a sizable breaded tenderloin. If you want a side I.e. coleslaw, cottage cheese, tots, French fries you need to order with your sandwich. The burger served on pumpernickel had fried onions on it with the sour cream. If I lived on the south side, I'd certainly make this my second home.

If Jenn and Chad are bartending, you're In for a treat. Fantastic customer service, bartenders that smile and seem to enjoy their craft as they work. I was in St. Paul for 5 days and spent 3 of my dinners there. N/A beer selection was a nice plus. They carry an impressive line of Tap beers from all over the country and their kitchen backs its reputation with great quality food! (Full bar, plenty of liquor and a great wine selection also) There's plenty of outdoor seating available also along the street, which is an open-air compliment to the restaurant. TV's cover every spot you could ask for, with a MONSTER main screen on the bar wall.... Not sure its size, but it would be calculated in feet, not inches! There is not a plethora of options in St. Paul for restaurants, especially in the downtown area. The Pillbox is walking distance to the Grand Casio Arena which is fantastic and most downtown hotels are only a 5-7 minute walk away. I spent 19 years in the restaurant business. From doorman, to buss boy, server, to bar tender, bar manager to general manager, I've managed restaurants similar to the Pillbox Tavern. I openly and publicly give them a huge shout out for their customer service, food quality and atmosphere....and additional kiddos for the upbeat environment their staff portrays. If Jen and Chad ever move to Chicago, they could write their own tickets In restaurant management or ownership. If you're looking for a place because your visiting, this is YOUR ONE STOP SHOP! If you are local and haven't tried it yet, you need to establish a new watering hole! If you're lucky enough to meet regulars like Tony and his wife at the bar, you Might just be rubbing elbows with some of the nicest people in St. Paul! Cheers to enjoying a smile on the rocks with new friends at The Pillbox Tavern. -Brad

Nope. EVERY single TV is on the same channel for the same game, with exception of three TVs located immediately to the right of the massive big screen. Two of those are on a coin-collecting show and the other has just now been changed from an episode of NCIS to the Minnesota WNBA game. Ya think at least the sound from the one game that IS on the TVs is being played? Nope. Some random music being played over the speakers. Food and drink specials are pretty good, but many inconsistencies throughout. Bottomless mimosas for $20 listed with no time associated, so one would assume it's all day. Waiter 'thinks' it's only until 2pm while the menu only hints it might be until 1pm bcuz it's listed near other specials that end at 1pm. Those food and drink specials I mentioned have no times associated with them. Listed as 'Vikings On the Wall of St Paul.' Asked the waiter if the specials were all-day Sunday during the games. He wasn't sure, said he 'thinks' it might only be during the Minnesota game. I HATE writing poor reviews and rarely ever do it. But this one was exceptional. Cool place but c'mon guys. After you're finished with your meal, as your leaving the marina go straight at the stop sign and park in that parking lot. Take a walk down the trail and check out the old swing bridge. It's a nice view. They also have live music on the patio sometimes and also have corn hole/bean bag toss leagues and competitions. This day I came to have a beer, and enjoy the weather. I had the black and bleu tenderloin salad. It was good, satisfying. Not amazing, but good. The only thing I didn't like was that the steak came out on a skewer. Nothing wrong with it really I just would have preferred it in the salad so I didn't have to pull it off the skewer. I also ordered the fried pickles which I have had before but enjoy very much. They are very cheesy but I think the pickle balances the cheese out or something. Usually if something is really cheesy like that it kind of grosses me out, but this doesn't. As I sat enjoying my beer and food, I overheard the guy at the neighboring table say that this place has his favorite Bloody Mary/the best Bloody Mary he said, (except for the casino, he said that one is good too, not sure what casino but hey). I have a different opinion on their Bloody Mary. It is not my favorite. When I had it in the past, I thought it was watered down, lacking flavor, but maybe it was just that day. Who knows!
