Fast forward 3 years later, we recently used Abe in June 2026. We had the pleasure of meeting his son Nick during our 2nd inspection. I really can't say enough about Abe. I find it difficult to top my 2023 review because it was so good. During our second experience with Abe, we had a different realtor. All I have to say is Abe is on your side. The jingle, "Nationwide is on your side" should be Abe's theme song except it would be, "Abe is on your side." I hate to sound cheesy, but when you are a first-time homebuyer, it's hard to relax and trust the process. Abe makes it easier to do that simply because he is loyal to you and only you. It's a huge relief to have someone with so much experience under their belt in your corner. It's also a relief to know you can have the same confidence in his son Nick. When you hire Abe, the relationship doesn't end with the home inspection. He fully prepares you to become a homeowner. He provides lists of referrals and lots of other useful information on his website such as what to look for during the final walk through. He assures you that you can reach out to him at any time- pre and post purchase. You feel like you are more than just a customer, you are now part of a family. Of course, the candy filled goody bag made especially for you helps a lot too during the inspection! Abe and Nick check every nook and cranny (crawlspaces, roofs, attics) They arrived on time and spent over 3 hours combing through the property. Abe uses his drone to check the roof. He even has a "back-up drone" just in case his high-tech drone fails for whatever reason. He is fully prepared for your inspection. He is able to explain complex issues clearly in layman's terms, or in our case, "first time home buyers" terms. He patiently answered our questions. His home inspection report is concise and easy to understand. This cannot be overstated. It includes a "Table of Contents" which makes everything easy to find. The report does not lack detail. It is well organized with very clear pictures. This helped us to negotiate repairs and buy in confidence. One of my best friends is currently house hunting. Her husband is a surgeon. She is worried that he might not be able to attend the home inspection. I immediately referred her to Abe and assured her that she would be in good hands. I explained she would have nothing to worry about if her husband could not attend. I highly recommend Abe & Nick Kurek to anyone buying a home in the area. Phil was a great inspector from start to finish. He walked us through all of the services he provides and the cost and answered all of our questions in detail. Other inspectors gave very brief descriptions of services provided, so we felt more comfortable going with Phil. We had the general inspection, wood destroying insect, radon, sewer camera, and oil tank sweep all done through Phil. On the day of the inspection, we were half an hour early but Phil was already there looking at the exterior of the house. He explained his process and invited us to shadow him and ask questions about anything we didn't understand. He was very detailed in his inspection, and took the time to explain to us any issues that needed immediate attention. The inspection lasted almost 4 hours, which I guess is uncommon because both real estate agents thought it would only take 2 hours. We closed on the house last week and have used the report a number of times when hiring contractors. Phil pointed out some structural issues in the basement which we are now getting fixed, and are slowly working through the rest of the items in his report. His detailed report makes it easy for us to send to other contractors so they know the scope of the issue. Okay, so back to our experience during the inspection: Mike walked us through every room of the house that had nice new modern shiny fixtures and finishes. He wasn't distracted by that at all. He found the homes secrets which were BIG ticket items (I MEAN BIG). I mean, the defects were so bad he would keep checking in on us to see if we were okay. His check-ins made such a disappointing process much more palatable. Side note: when you hear such horrible news during an inspection for a home you love, Mike will (respectfully) tell you the truth, NOT what you want to hear. Home buying is an emotional process. When you step away and look at the objective evidence presented to you, you'll feel appreciative and grateful you had someone in your corner telling you the truth and not feeding into what you want to hear to move things along. This helped us make a reasonable counter to account for structural damages and eventually helped us easily walk away from a shiny apple with a rotten core. Okay, back to the inspection.... Mike also let us get involved in the process. For example, he pointed out issues in the attic and carefully guided us up so we could see exactly what he was talking about so it would be easier to explain to the sellers in the negotiation process. I personally got down on the bathroom floor to look at the level of pooling in the shower and saw how dangerously close the water was to overflowing into the rest of the bathroom space. These are little details that really made the experience worth it. The most valuable portion of Mike's service is his knowledge. He truly is a master of his craft. IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO READ HIS MATERIALS, EVERYTHING--YES, EVERYTHING, you will understand exactly what I am talking about! Mike breaks down exactly what is a structural defect, what should be done for proper maintenance, and what things would be nice to do to increase the longevity and use of the home. Having that tiered approach helped us tremendously with negotiations. We were able to obtain rough estimates of the minimum cost to correct the structural defects and went in with a strong argument coupled with a strong supporting report, in addition to estimates, and Mike's impressive CV. Due to the extent of work that had to be done, a meeting of the minds did not happen on this particular property. HOWEVER, we are so appreciative of Mike's thorough examination of the property. My parents who have been Brokers for over 40 years were extremely impressed, family contractors used Mike's report to study and analyze line item by line item in preparation of negotiations, our Realtor and Attorney both loved his report as well! Michael provides a super thorough inspection and pays attention even to the smallest details. He points out loose stones in the stairs, narrow parking spots that claim to fit more cars than it is realistically possible, stair handles placed uncomfortably, among other things. He also points out important things that are done not up to code and can cause serious issues down the line. It is a responsibility of a buyer to evaluate the findings and apply them, whether in negotiations with the seller, or just for your own reference later to understand what requires fixing and how urgent it is. And knowing that in advance, I think I received a superior service, because thanks to Michael, not only I received a concession from a buyer to fix an improperly installed, though working, garage door, but also avoided troubles with insurance company later by requesting asbestos removal and obtaining corresponding certificate. Michael's commission may be a bit higher than the market, but it's well worth it.
