Believe the bad reviews! James Watt is insane. We had the misfortune of using him in June 2024 to remove a large tree from our front yard. I am writing the review now because my husband and I agreed we would wait until we moved because he's so unhinged, and we were scared that he would retaliate if he knew where we lived. We had to call the police just to put this on record in case anything happened to our property because he kept texting me and calling/texting my husband. He even started calling and texting my husband at 12 am. He then went on to tell my husband he doesn't wear any pants in the relationship and shouldn't allow me to make any decisions. Read on... James had one of his workers take down the tree. The deal was to include grinding the stump down. The guy didn't do that, and the issue remained unresolved for quite some time. Finally, the guy came back and grinded the stump (not completely, but we didn't complain). The problem is, he left the grinded portions all over the yard in a giant mound. I spent time bagging it all up myself. Our regular lawn guy came around and charged us $80 to bag the rest. We informed James we would deduct the $80 from the total or he could complete other work to receive the remainder. He didn't like that. Crazy thing is, we have several mutual friends from high school somehow. My friends are quite normal, so I'm not sure who would hang out with someone like him. Great grass and great crew. I ordered 10 pallets of St. Augustine and had it delivered. It arrived on time and in good condition. The crew prepped the ground to get rid of any old grass and brought dirt to get the ground level so that the sod would lay properly. They then rolled the sod to ensure a good bond with the soil/dirt. At the end of the job, they cleaned up after themselves and left no indication that they had been there. A++ read more

We had our yard leveled and slopped to control the rain water, then new sod put down. James and his team thought of it all, made several great design suggestions while we walked the project to estimate it. They covered everything, the drainage, the install, stump grinding and the sprinklers. It was really helpful ..I just wanted to get rid of mud with some grass. I purchased a pallet of grass from this company a couple of years ago and was satisfied with what I received, so they were the first place I contacted when I needed more grass. I went to their website, and then called the number. You get a recording that says not to leave a message because no one will check them, but to leave a text. So I texted him that I needed 2 pallets of grass. I then went out and measured the area and realized that I needed much more than I thought. I soon got a text from him saying he had grass and to call him. I did call him, but told him I now needed 4 pallets of grass. He asked me when I needed it, so I told him within 4-5 days so it could be laid this weekend. He told me he wasn't sure if he could do that because it was raining (I guess where the grass is harvested), but I needed to order and pay for it, and if he could, he'd deliver it. I told him that I wasn't going to pay for grass only to be told that later that he couldn't deliver it when I needed it. He then began to talk down to me asking if I know how the grass business goes, then he said it was obvious I didn't understand the grass business. I told him I didn't need to know about the grass business and thanked him for all his help and disconnected. I thought: What a rude, arrogant guy talking down to a prospective client. But he wasn't through yet. I then received a text calling me a "jackass" and further insulting me. I have attached screen prints of the conversation. I can easily say I would NEVER do business this guy and with fill the yard with concrete if he were the only source for grass. You can read our exchange and make the decision for yourself. Called for quote on having grass installed they said would come by to give estimate. They never showed.

In June 2023, Dallas Sod replaced existing Bermuda Sod with Zoysia Sod (thick) at my house. They did not provide a written estimate. Provided a verbal promise to repair the sprinkler system if damaged by the crew. I trusted them and did not request a written quote. After completion of work, Dallas Sod gave me a bill for premium install which I paid. Per their website, premium install provides a limited warranty which they refused to provide. Moreover, in the front lawn, close to the street, has drip piping. When the crew did the tilling, they damaged it completely. It was repaired by Sandro Becerra (recommended by Dallas Sod) which cost me $645, but Dallas sod declined to pay. I called James Watts. He did not answer but said do not leave messages. His voice mail said that messages will not be answered. Instead send a text message which I did. But neither he called back, nor he replied to my text message. They do not care for after sales service. Dallas Sod does not even answer the following questions: * After installation of the new sod when should the lawn be mowed. * When should the lawn be sprayed for weed control? * Why some of the new sod now has thin blades? * One of the stones installed wobbles. Needs fixing. * Why at some places weed like long horizontal grass is growing? This was common for Bermuda grass. I will encourage other prospective clients to get a written quote, review the terms and conditions before agreeing to any work being promised by Dallas Sod Grass. read more

We ordered 3 pallets delivered to us.  On the date of delivery, the sods that we got from the pallets were: - not fresh - cooked - dying - and torn We couldn't get a hold of the owner that day because he was out of town so we were forced to install the bad sods. 3 weeks trying to watering it, 3x a day, the sods still look: - brown - cooked - and dying (see attached photos) What we paid for was not what this company was trying to sell, hence they will try to sell you a bad or leftover grass trying to make some extra money in case you didn't know. DO NOT BUY SOD OR GRASS from this company unless you want your grass to end up like mine.   I don't mind paying for goods and services but I hate companies that cut corners and sell bad products pretending that they could get away with it. read more

Company should be ashamed. I requested my wife to get 130sqft of St.Augustine. They told her that was 1/2 a pallet and charged $252 and it wasn't even 130spft to boot. The grass was old, the bottom soil was cracked and falling off and the grass was mangled. All I can say is buyer BEWARE. They will take advantage of those who are not in the know. And be sure to check the product before they load it to make sure it is healthy. They will RIP you off otherwise. read more

Can you give negative stars?! James is the most unprofessional company owner I have ever dealt with. First sent a request online, no response. Followed up with a call to them, and got a voicemail that said, don't leave a voicemail. I sent a text. No response. I followed up with another text, no response. Followed up again, and he finally responded. I sent what was needed. He called me and right away was aggressive. Non stop interrupting! Kept trying to do more than what is needed. He eventually cut me off and disconnected the line. I told him how unprofessional that was, and he right away turned aggressive via text. He then called me back and continued to be vulgar and say negative and very unprofessional comments, even making comments about my family. RUN AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AND JAMES!!!! I hired Dallas Sod to sod my backyard in St. Augustine on August 2nd during a huge heatwave. (Most of the grass there had died during long, heavy rains two years ago.) We were well into 100°F+ weather when the crew cheerfully laid the sod (and now it's 108°F+ and our lawn is still so pretty!). Everyone including the crew that laid the sod has been so professional, kind and helpful in every way possible. Even now, weeks later, they help me on the phone if I have a question. The heat definitely has been a hindrance (meaning it will take a bit longer for the sod to take root) but the grass is great! We feel we got a great price for our new lawn because 1) they used a weed eater to get rid of the bits of old grass we had and 2) they tilled our backyard before 3) adding plenty of the best soil then 3) leveling our yard and then 4) the crew also made a trench in the soil for run-off so our backyard won't flood in torrential rains! I recently purchased a pallet of sod from Dallas Sod Grass and I was very happy with them. They delivered when they said they would, the quality of the grass was great and their customer service was great. I dealt with one of the owners directly. However, they charged my checking account twice for the sod. Once on April 2nd and once on April 3rd. I am surprised that they would not know this if they reconcile their books daily or weekly. I did not find out until I was faced with a problem at my bank. I contacted the company through their website and thru the owners direct cell phone twice on Sunday. He finally contacted me Sunday night asking me for my information and he would look at it first thing in the morning Monday. Monday came and went. I sent a couple of messages asking about it. When he finally contacted me, he told me that it did not make sense that this happened and told me it was my fault because I had been asked for my credit card number twice and gave it to them. I told him that I needed the refund immediately and asked about the charges I incurred. I was told he had a bad day and he did not want to deal with it at that time and he would not cover any charges. I was told to contact him again Tuesday morning to remind him. I did this and he had someone else in the office call. They would NOT refund my money unless I came to their office and signed something. I told them I could not do that and the man in the office came to my house and had me sign some document to confirm they were refunding. I was told again by the owner (who by the way did not tell me he was an owner - he just kept saying he was a manager and I needed to talk to Margaret who was the owner) they will NOT assist with charges they were responsible for and I could take them to small claims court, he did not care. This man and his customer service was horrible and not honorable. His office said they would cover it but he told them not to. I would tell you that if you want to use them, please make sure you watch the charges because they don't Update.... April 29th I just got off the phone with one of the two owners. He reviewed all the steps with me which were all accurate. He then stated that he would get back to the office and review the information. He asked for my bank statement. I told him he already had the part that reflected the two charges and the NSF items he caused. He told me that it is my responsibility to watch my account every day to make sure this doesn't happen. So I am responsible. I asked him if he had the same rules. Did he look at his account every day? He then should have noticed he charged me twice. He told me they only look at their account when they reconcile it. He offered me $70 to go away. I told him no. He told me that I could take him to court. He would sue me too. I asked him what for and he said he would contact his atty and figure out some reason he could sue me. He told me he was recording our call and it was legal, that in Texas he did not have to disclose this. I don't care because all of the call showed he was in the wrong. I did not tell him this part. But he said he was hanging up and wasn't going to do anything about it because it was my fault. read more

Be very careful if you hire this company. We talked to the super rude receptionist several different times to confirm what was included in the quoted price, then confirmed the price with the owner before writing a check for payment. He called the following Monday to let us know we would be charged extra for top soil (we were told repeatedly the whole job was covered in the quoted price). When we called to inquire about the $325 we were charged for top soil (seemed high) the owner cursed and called us names over the phone and threatened to put a lien on our house if we didn't want to pay it. He then sent a follow up text ranting and raving and called us "stupid people". The sod wasn't laid correctly and we now have to spend even more money fixing the job (including replacing sprinkler heads that now won't reach the grass due to poor sod installation, and filling in gaps where the sod pieces don't meet up).
