Beware of their pricing! I stopped in Dakota J's this past weekend as an out-of-towner. Although I was definitely impressed with the selection and service, I realized, after the fact, how inflated their pricing is! I purchased a pair of Dear John shorts priced at $85.00. I decided to check Dear John's website to see what other colors I could buy (post purchase) and their pricing for ALL colors are marked at $69.00--$16.00 LESS than Dakota J's!! I can understand marking up a bit, especially for boutiques, but this is taking advantage of their customers. Feeling ripped off. read more

Today, after being forced to valet (Wednesday at 5 pm, argh!) just to make an exchange at Paper Source, I decided since I spent that money I should take some time to stroll around for once. My mom said the other day that she wants to try out the scarf trend but didn't know what style to get that is cool, so my goal was find mom a lovely beginner scarf for Christmas. I walked by Dakota J's and saw a wall of scarves right inside the window... perfect! The scarves are very pretty but rather pricey. But I think the one I got was totally worth the money, it had about 5 colors on it (so she could sport it with different outfits) and a lovely, abstract floral design, all for about $45. I decided to walk around the store just in case something else struck me, and they had some very lovely jewelry! It looks like local, unique little pieces, I saw a few dainty necklaces that reminded me of the more expensive finds at Anthropologie. The clothes in the back were weird, I wasn't feeling them. But let me describe who would love this stuff- *Women who live in Candler or Inman Park, or Little 5 Points that are in their 50's. *Were hippies, and/or new agers that believed in crystal power in the 80's. *Understand the basics of Wiccan religion, and can make a mean vegan cassoulet. Bought a hat at Dakota J's and got it home only to realize it was defective. The hat was cut lopsided, and no it wasn't the style. :( Husband exchanged said hat but when I took it out of the bag, I discovered it had unraveling stitching on the top. Store would not give refund - only store credit. In my opinion this shouldn't apply to defective merchandise. When I looked over their reviews I noticed another customer had a similar issue. This quirky, eclectic Virginia Highland boutique has a bit of everything - clothes, jewelry, funky bags, shoes, and other miscellaneous accesories. While I myself find most of the stuff a little too whimsical (I feel like I am dressing for my Alice in Wonderland cameo!), I give Dakota J's 3 stars for their jewelry which I like. Okay, I'm a guy and am the Duke - go figure. My wife and 4 daughters love this place - we have found things ranging from inexpensive jewelry to clothing to those cards that have the 1950's lady languidly announcing she's a crack whore (or whatever). I highly recommend Dakota J's if you are looking for a fantastic assortment of clothing, jewelry and shoes and outstanding customer service. The clothes range from really casual/denim friendly to dresses for a night out. The owner set up my dressing room and added a few items...one of which I bought and would not have considered if she hadn't taken the time. Suggestive selling rarely works on me so Brava! I just love the vibe and the clothes and will definitely be back. Other reviews mentioned that it's super boho/hippie but I disagree. Yes, there's some boho looks but I think it's just the right amount and all make sense regarding what's happening right now in fashion. This place has a a good number of basic pieces hidden among their more colorful, attention-getting stuff. In particular, I appreciated the plain black slacks with the hidden wide elastic band - a great thing for women who want that tight fitting waist, regardless of gaining or losing a couple of pounds. The only thing that might make you think twice is the price. I also saw a dress here that I had seen the week before in another boutique in Atlanta for much less, although they did have a better range of sizes. I've been in here three or four times and left empty-handed. There is something just a little too "much" in the selection. Some of the stuff is just plain gaudy. Its a little cheaper than Mitzi's, but not by much and their style aesthetic is nowhere near the quality. I do like their jewelry and accessory collection. read more

Very poor customer service and lousy business acumen!! I tried on a blouse and when I went to purchase it, I was told by the owner that it had been priced incorrectly, and she would not honor the price on the tag. The correct price was less than $20 more, but I did not buy it out of principal, and she lost a customer and gained a poor review for less than $20. read more

Stumbled into Dakota J's while exploring the Virginia Highlands neighborhood with a friend who is thinking of moving to Atlanta. What started out as an innocent peek turned into a successful shopping trip! They have fun one of a kind merchandise and clothes. The ladies were helpful but not pushy; I tried on some dresses I loved but didn't think they fit quite right. They suggested some accessories that made the outfits! Being from NYC, my standards are pretty tough. I stumbled upon this store about 2 years ago and got a great necklace that I love. At one point, I thought I lost the necklace and went by to see if I could find something similar. Telling the saleswoman my woes, she asked what the piece looked like and determined that the artist who made it was based in Atlanta. She offered to have another custom made. I was so thrilled! Well, I had them make one similar but different colors in the event I found it (which I eventually did). And I love the second piece she made. Fast forward a few months and my friends 5 yr old daughter wants my necklace. She loves it. I tell her I will have one made especially for her. I went back a few weeks ago and told the saleswoman the scoop. Well, the artist came back with a most beautiful, sparkly, pink, purple, perfect for a 5 yr old rendition of my necklace! I love Dakota J's. I recently discovered it and have been back for repeat trips already! It's so easy to get to as there is complementary valet (next to Chico's). The staff is very helpful. They are more than willing to help you pull together a complete outfit, but they aren't pushy. The clothes are unique and can get a little funky, but in a good way. The jewelry is gorgeous and they always have excellent accessories. I love their selection of party dresses. They frequently have incredible sales. I thought it would be nice to support a local shop and would get better service than at a big department store. Obviously I was wrong. Dakota J's basically stole my money since the sweater is unwearable and customer service is terrible. It speaks volumes about the owner's character and Dakota J's customer service if you are going to hide behind a little slip of paper instead of dealing with the issue (product defect) and making things right. DO NOT BUY GIFT CERTIFICATES HERE! They are short lived! This is a boutique that I've loved for years - over 1/2 my wardrobe is from this store. My husband always buys me gift certificates here for every holiday so I typically can shop anytime and it remains in their computer system. Until their computer system went down? What? No backup! (I should of had my receipt) but since I'm a more than occasional shopper I assumed my balance was still intact. The shop owner told me that she had no record of me and that I had lost the balance of my certificates. She offered nothing to me - discounts, to come in a talk in person - just "I'm sorry".
