And who doesn't love meat + cheese + bread? So when sustenance was needed on our road trip, a Yelp search for "sandwiches" led us to What A Blessing. I admit we were skeptical. The interior was small and... well... odd. It reminded me of my great-aunt Marie's farmhouse. Upon immediately walking in the door I saw that a large bakery case was empty. I almost walked out thinking the place was going out of business. However, we grabbed a table in the (small) dining room and perused the limited menu. We ordered roast beef, but they were out of it. We ordered soup, but they had none to offer. Discouragement set it, but we persevered. Finally, our subs and sandwiches arrived! They all came with a side of BBQ chips. Now... BBQ chips are my favorite, so I perked up immediately. Let me shout this: THE SUB ROLLS WERE HOMEMADE! They were delicious. Fantastic flavor. Perfect texture and crumb. The subs were piled with meat, which tasted high quality. Kid #1 swore her turkey was Boar's Head. Maybe it was or maybe it wasn't, but it was definitely quality meat. My cheesesteak was fantastic, and the Italian sub was spot-on. The burger was just average, but the delicious HOMEMADE bun made up for it. All the veggies (lettuce, tomato, etc.) on our subs seemed fresh. The owner(?) dropped some free pastries at our table, too. Sweet, tender, and tasty! I would recommend you grab a donut or two to go, too. In the area and want a sweet or a sammie? Check out What A Blessing to support a local guy and a Christian.

Decor nicely blends industrial glass from original windows and doors, with modern color and layout. The donuts are exceptional - not over designed or sickeningly heavy. Get your own, don't share. We figured some sugar would help fuel our hike, and we were right. We got a late start to the day, so when we got there they only had a few different donuts left, but they were AMAZING. My husband got a classic donut with chocolate icing, I got a cinnamon sugar donut, and we each got a cake donut. The cake donut was decadent and so soft. Each donut had such great flavor and was moist. I also loved that my cinnamon sugar donut kept the cinnamon and sugar on the actually donut vs falling off and all over the rental car. I didn't take photos of our coffees, but I had one of the best chai lattes I've ever had from any state and my husband had a caramel mocha latte that he declared the best coffee of our entire trip (he sadly didn't like any other coffee from the other bakeries we stopped at during our time in Charlottesville, but I enjoyed all of mine so I guess he's just picky lol). Wholly recommend stopping in here and grabbing some donuts to-go like we did!

The truck moves to different locations on different days, but first after calling the number for Strites and talking to Carl, the owner I mistakenly was given directions to the main store, and not the truck so I picked up a half dozen of their great donuts (blueberry and Bavarian creme were my favorites) but no Carl, whose friendly voice directed me numerous time because I kept on forgetting the different addresses each time before I could get them into the GPS. After leaving the main store and talking to Carl a couple more times I was determined to find Carl (It was on my way to Roanoke ) and the Silver Bullet, thirty some feet of donut making perfection. Finally pulling onto the lot where donut magi was taking place, Carl, and I had a nice chat, and I was lucky enough to go in and see his fine operation up close. I found out that Carl besides working his donut business that he started many years before with his wife, Miriam, from the back of a truck) has a ministry for prisoners, and also feeds the hungry, he has even worked in Camden New Jersey doing G-ds work which is up close to my neck of the woods. Well these donuts are some of the finest that this old Hotdog World Champion has ever eaten and my new favorite is Strite's glazed jelly filled long boy. Go track down Carl, and the Silver Bullet down yourself, or hit the main store, you'll be glad you did...

It's marvelous with a cup of coffee. The other donuts looked promising, but be sure to try these bestselling items if it's your first time visiting this place. My wife, two teenage sons, and I were stopping by Harrisonburg, VA for a lunch break on our 4-hour drive to Blacksburg, VA from northern Virginia. We found a coffee place nearby (Merge Coffee Roasters) close to the EMU campus and saw this place. Everyone devoured the donuts - we liked it so much that we had to buy another one. Overall, I would recommend this place which is very clean and has a few small tables (it's more of a "grab-n-go" place). It has prompt, attentive service. If you're driving along I-81, Strite's Donuts has several other Virginia locations, including Winchester, Front Royal, Strasburg, Woodstock, and Waynesboro.
