Mother's Day for the best Mom in the world (mine) featuring a s'mores blizzard cake
    Robby W.

I have very fond memories of DQ growing up back in Missouri. My family was a frequent visitor to the one closest to my house. What sticks out most in my mind though was their ice cream cakes. From about age 5 to about 14 I got one for every single birthday. So yeah, to say I was a fan would be putting it mildly. That location eventually closed however, and that was the end of the story until I moved to this area where the chain still has a presence. I recently moved to Algonquin, and the bike path I like to cycle on passes right through downtown East Dundee. This DQ started to become a handy pit stop since it's an old school location with a walk up window and outdoor seating so I do not need to lock up my bike. The menu here does not look to have changed one iota from back in the day. Still the same old burgers, baskets, and of course all of the yummy desserts. When I found out my Mother was coming up to visit me for Mother's Day this year I inquired if they still made ice cream cakes for special occasions. Sure enough, they do. I could not get my money out fast enough. You have to give them a few days notice on the cakes, but online they actually have a massive selection of designs and they will customize it for whatever your preferences are. My Mother got a huge kick out of the fact that I scored a DQ cake again after all these years. Oh, and as you might expect from the picture it was absolutely delicious to boot. I am sure to be a semi-regular guest at this location during the warmer months when I am biking, and the cakes are sure to be a secret weapon in my arsenal when I have special occasions.

    Popular stop for cyclists!

You are welcomed to sample any of the flavors and cost is determined by weight of ice cream. Unlike other places, toppings can be added for free after you pay for your ice cream. They had a variety of sauces, candies, sprinkles, and even offered complimentary coffee. I sampled a variety of flavors and really enjoyed the Twix Bar, Marsh-Mallow Smores, Salted Caramel Blondie but ultimately chose the Boston Cream Pie. My only drawback was staff could have been happier, the floors were a bit dirty, and toppings counter was a bit disheveled. They also promote most ice cream flavors as "Howling Ice Cream" but some containers were clearly marked as Haggen-Dazs. Either way, I enjoyed my ice cream and would revisit! Tip: They did have (3) non-dairy ice cream flavors on top of many sorbet flavors.

When I walked in it was clean and lit nicely. Plenty of variety with the items. The mint lemonade I ordered was really good. I had never had something like that before and thoroughly enjoyed! For drinks, a choice between regular and large. Pictured is the large, and to be honest it's not exactly that big but I think my expectations are hindered by fast food places like Wendy's that sell a cup the size of a barrel labeling it a large. Plus, no ice added in so it's all drink. The drink total was $8.72, that is with a tip though. Of course tipping is always optional but I always feel nervous not to tip. Im not sure why I did because all he did was fill a cup with the drink that was in the mixer. But yknow lol not his fault. Solid place and friendly guy.

There's some quite unusual flavors so you can come back a few times. Coming here the first time it was kind of confusing. It's located on one side of the entrance. There's a bit of a passage to get through. Has mostly gelatos. There's also a few sorbets at times. It's about $5 a scoop, but there's much more than just bowls and cones. They make milkshakes and even have hot and iced coffee including Turkish. Crepes are one of the main items. These are filled with chocolate, Nutella, or basically whatever. Also they have dip sticks, which is fruit on skewers dipped in chocolate. They also make lava cake and other big items. Got a lot of sweet stuff to both drink and eat. It's located on Douglas close to Highland. There's a lot of more unusual flavors, along with more common ones, so it has a pretty big variety.

Gee N Jay's is one of the cheap Americanized Chinese classics. Only has orders to go. The majority of customers wouldn't want to eat inside thankfully. Found out about this after going past it a few times and after that we got curious. It's a pretty crappy looking building that even has a drive thru if you can believe it. This certainly isn't authentic stuff. A typical place with the big pictures of the entrees. They only had a few listed. Also has kiosks. These had the full menu though. It's about $13 for an entree. There's a few okay for vegetarians. I got the Kung Pao Tofu. This is a pretty standard version. Has a pretty good hotness. There's mostly tofu along with a few pieces of baby corn and peppers. Great place to get takeout, because that's the only option of course. It's located on Dundee at Page. They close pretty early in the evenings, and they're closed on Wednesdays.

The chicken was deliciously cooked and seasoned. Orange chicken and General Tso's are advertised as spicy but it does not have a crazy spicy kick at all. The shrimp fried rice was delicious I would definitely order that as its own side in the future. Wontons were boiled and filled with beef and veggies. The platter comes with an egg roll and drink. They also sell desserts like Ice cream, chocolate covered bananas, and funnel cakes! They did ask for payment over the phone which they apparently do after 7pm as they close at 8. Small location located right by los Cómales Elgin. More of a take out spot as it is super small and parking is very limited. Will go back for the jalapeño chicken platter and also family style order of a myriad of items.
