Dairy Kastle is one of those local places that always seems to have a crowd. It's a seasonal ice cream shop that closes during the winter, and it definitely feels like a Louisville favorite. When we arrived, it was so busy that there was barely anywhere to sit. Personally, I thought it was just regular ice cream, but there's clearly something people really love about this place. I live near Dairy Kastle and in recent years haven't gone very often ... we decided to give dairy kastle another shot for a late afternoon lunch. It's now $15 for two chili dogs and a flurry ... the service is still questionable when it takes a while to get your order. Then the chili dogs have a charge for cheese and no cheese. On the return trip not even a sorry ... it was a half hour ordeal with the ordering and return trip and I live a block away... this late afternoon adventure was a reminder of why it had been a while since we had been to Dairy Kastle and it will probably be a while before we make it back. Maybe sometime soon they will get the issues worked out. read more

To be fair, my rating is based on their food mostly. I did not try the ice cream, which I believe they are better known for. My chili dog was just OK. Could be much better with options like onions, slaw, relish. Chips were Lays products purchased at Costco. The service was good, and you eat outside on tables. We popped in for an ice cream treat when there was no line. Which is a rarity. We were splitting a pineapple sundae. Once I ordered the girl ask if I wanted, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. I would have thought those items were standard on a sundae, but that is not the case. I think a small sundae is about $3.50, which would have been reasonable. But my sundae came to $6.14 due to an uncharge of $1 for whipped cream, $1 for nuts, and50 cents for a cherry. With $1 tip, my bill was $7.14. A bit extravagant for a small sundae. I will say it was good but not worth that. I also take some responsibility for not checking to see what was included, but they should tell you that, in my opinion. Parking can be an issue, but there are several tables to eat on the premises. If i had brought my own whipped cream and nuts and I would have given it a 5 star rating read more

My husband's grandpa and grandma speak so highly of this place. They used to come on dates here all the time. We've driven by it a bunch of times, and we finally were able to stop in. It was a really special visit for us! This place's ability to stand the test of time is a testament to its quality! We waited in line for a little bit (a long line is another good sign!), but the staff was super efficient and got people moving pretty quickly. I got some sugar-free butter pecan that I really enjoyed. My husband got a chocolate dipped cone that he also really enjoyed. The locale is so cute and inviting! It really makes you want to stop in. They have some dedicated parking, plus some street parking pretty close by. Heads up though, they are cash only. We loved our visit here, we can't wait to come back when we're in the area. I waited probably 25 minutes to get to the window to order as there's only one cashier, and their POS system was down for a bit. But the soft serve was worth the wait. Coming from out of town but assuming this is a local favorite. I went on a random Wednesday night and waiting an hour for my ice cream. I'm very understanding when it comes to local business/busy crowds. One issue I encountered was if you got a soft serve or something "easy" to do, you'd get your ice cream so if you go something more "complex" like a flurry or shake, yours kept getting put off. Since last year Dairy Kastle now accepts credit cards. That was painful last year as I waited over 40 minutes a couple of times to get 2 shakes. This last visit today was only 15 minutes and they got the order right. Our go to is the chocolate peanut butter shake which is quite good when they make it correctly. $12.06 for 2 shakes these days is a sign of a the times . Dairy Kastle has changed considerably and not always for the better. From something as small as eliminating flurry toppings to changing the line formation many things are less convenient. (Although the option to pay by card is an improvement.) I ordered at the window and then was told it would be 30 minutes before I received my order. It actually took 45. Before the changeover, I've been here on much busier nights and never waited more than ten or fifteen minutes. When I asked the cashier why they were still taking orders instead of helping to catch up on existing orders they said they weren't allowed to stop taking orders, continuing to add to the backup. It's an inefficient and frustrating system and I hope it was an anomaly. Please improve this issue or at least let people people know about the wait before they order. The quality of the product bumps it up a star to three. read more

Whoop whoop. It's always exciting when Dairy Kastle reopens for the year. It isn't summer in Louisville without it. This year, found them under new ownership. The biggest changes are the self serve area for napkins and condiments plus chalk for the kids and actual lines. But, the biggest change is that they now accept credit cards which makes it easier to drop by on a whim. My go to is, and always will be, a chocolate malt but I'll occasionally have an orange/vanilla swirl or a butterfinger treat. I'd also like to try the new slushy soft serve option sometime soon. It's also a nice way to gather with your community. It's simple but that's part of the appeal. There are no indoor seating, but I believe there are a few more outdoor tables this year too. read more

So I stopped in with my son after walking our dogs on Sun. Only 1 other person in front of us. Now I know we all have our days, but the gentleman at the window was... unenthusiastic to say the least. Lol. Didn't want to be there apparently. I let that go & thought "I'm going to give him a nice tip to uplift his day". $10 on 2 orders of ice cream. Didn't seem to help & no "thank you". Ok.. I ordered the brown turtle sundae. Eeh. Lots of soft serve vanilla ice cream on top. Very few nuts although I paid extra for those. Little whipped cream, which again I paid extra for. At the bottom of the cup? I think Carmel but not really sure as there wasn't much & really didn't have much of a taste. Last year I feel was so much better. Had to celebrate the unofficial last day of summer with the one and only Dairy Kastle and what a treat it was. I got the banana split, traditional vanilla ice cream with strawberries, chocolate & pineapple topping. It was huge, could have shared but didn't, it was just too good. I love maraschino cherries so when I saw there were three instead of the usual one I was ecstatic. Dairy Kastle is pretty nostalgic for me, makes me think of my college days at U of L so I really love it. Highly suggest you give it a go if you are looking for some great ice cream treats. Visiting from Cincinnati looking for a fun place to take the kids that were with us for tasty treats and found Dairy Kastle thanks to a recommendation of a friend from the area- and we were not disappointed. The lines were long, a good sign, but the employees were fast & efficient so they moved quickly- but was also kind of nice because it allowed us to have some fun family time while we waited. Under new ownership and it shows. This is not the Dairy Kastle that it was in the past. Very slow service, I mean really slow. Accuracy of orders doesn't exist anymore. Have I mentioned that the service is slow. Been coming here since I was a kid. This was a great summer stop for our family. Unfortunately with the new owners and service it's just not worth the drive. This is our second visit since the 2024 opening and after over a month things are still the same. Dairy Kastle is a Louisville institution. And it means a lot to see it taking COVID-19 precautions so seriously. I got to finally visit for the summer the weekend before last. And man, had I been missing the Fat Elvis shake. This remains my favorite. Love the mix of peanut butter plus banana plus vanilla ice cream. And unlike in years past, there is now a formal queue with ropes set up for lines with hanging reminders to stand 6 feet apart. There are also signs saying that masks are required on the property. And if you don't have one, they are selling them for 50 cents. Dairy Kastle is perfect in these crazy times. It's outside, taking measures and serving up sweet treats. read more

I come here every once in a while but forget some summers to stop by. I've had their ice cream and taco in a bag before. Some of my friends have had the chili dog and the veggie chili dog previous visits. I'm now dairy sensitive and decided to try out the vegan ice cream. They've got three flavors to choose from: coconut, pineapple, or strawberry. I opted for strawberry in a cup with Oreos while my sister got coconut instead. Fantastic! The texture was almost similar to ice cream. My other friend got a sundae which she thoroughly enjoyed. It's cash only here. Parking is limited but you can park at the church lot next door. The lines can get long but it moves fast. There aren't a ton of tables but the church has stairs you can sit on. The staff seems well-prepared for the crowds as they never seemed to lose their energy or joy. Can't wait to return! read more

For over 30 years I went to this place because in my opinion they had the best chili dogs I've ever had anywhere ever. And yesterday was my first trip this year to see them and I drive 35 miles out of my way when I go to this place only to find out that the smiling friendly staff that I've gotten used to over the last 30 years not a single one in sight instead we have a bunch of people that look like they're angry to be there and look like you're bothering them by asking them to do their job even though there was absolutely nobody in line. Now I'm a little weird I like my shredded cheese on the side because I don't like it melted I like it cold I like the contrast. So I asked for my keys on the side and explained that I like it cold and what do they bring me a cup of melted nacho cheese they no longer have shredded cheese for their hot dogs it's just nacho cheese was they serve me was a Thornton's hot dog they've been sitting in the burner for hours it was the worst hot dog chili dog I've ever had in my life. This place went from being I must make a trip and do this before the season closes to I will never ever eat there again in all I see I feel like this place should refund me the $10 in gas I wasted to make a trip to be disappointed by a Thornton's hot dog cuz that's all it was it was awful and nasty. The new staff horrible. The food is the worst in the world now. Huge disappointment and it's sad to say after 30 years of being a regular customer you couldn't pay me to go back to that place they would have to fire the entire staff for me to even consider going back and my food would have to be free read more

Alright Louisville, listen up: this place is a freaking gem. Here's why: it is so incredibly cheap. I'm talking $1.15 for a hot dog cheap. $1.85 for a very good portion of delicious soft serve cheap. Seriously, if you have low expectations of things because the prices are low, then so be it. I've always enjoyed the "real" food I've gotten here. The taco in the bag, and chili dogs being my personal favorites. Orange and vanilla cream soft serve and their orange cow is what they should boast about the most. Those are my go to's.
