This is the best place to eat on campus. The food is always good. The chicken curry and the lasagna are specialties.

There's also a Tim Hortons across from Cafe Oasis in the Atrium as well. From what we all know and have heard, hospital food is pretty bland and unappetizing. And I don't recall hospital cafeteria food being that great either. BUT, I have to say that Cafe Oasis in St. B is pretty damn good. The cafeteria offers up tons of options ranging from create your own salads or wraps, lots of soup selections, "comfort foods", stir fries, grilled sandwiches, pizza from Pizza Pizza and pre-packaged sandwiches/veggies/fruit/sushi. They also offer up sodium reduced options too. They also provide frequent buyers card (get them at the till) like buy 9 salads and get the 10th one free. Prices are pretty average for a cafeteria with some items on the pricey end. But if you're at St. B hospital it's either this cafeteria or Tim Hortons. If you're going to get a salad, skip the pre-packaged ones as a small portion of caesar salad cost just under $6 after tax. Whereas, if you go to the "wild greens" - the make your own salad area, you can make a huge salad with a ton of options for $8.38 or $9.95 with chicken added. You can select romaine, mixed green or spinach as your base and add chicken if you want. Then there's mushrooms, cucumbers, celery, red/green peppers, pineapple, mandarins, onions, carrots, chick peas, kidney beans etc, then you get to add feta or shredded marble cheese and a choice of 7 dressings. And to top it off you can add sliced almonds, croutons, fried noodles and cranberries. The person behind the counter mixes up your salad for you and you get this perfectly dressed salad. Very delicious, healthy and super filling! The food here is way better than many of the food options near the hospital. "Culinary Table" offers up yummy hot entree dishes for $8.95. I had a great Moroccan Spiced Chicken served with couscous and a cucumber & tomato salad. Juicy dark chicken meat with slightly overcooked couscous but still good and a great salad. "Coyote Jack's Grill" charges something like over $5 after tax fro a gourmet grilled cheese - mine was with bacon. It wasn't worth it as it was way too greasy and they slathered garlic herb butter on the outside which kind of overpowered the cheese and bacon inside. I wouldn't get the grilled sandwich again. So most of the items here are pretty good and at a decent price but things like the grilled cheese or the small prepacked salads are not worth the price. There's a lot of seating in the Atrium with lots of bright light and you get to see the hustle and bustle of the hospital. And you can grab a Timmie's afterwards, which is open daily till 1130 pm.

There is almost always an excellent showing of soups at the front and breakfast is an awesome affair. Muffins, coffee and even perennial favorites like the good ol bacon and eggs are on order with hashbrown cubes ready to go! They even offer a delicious breakfast burrito with the offering of salsa! The lunches aren't too bad with your normal sandwiches and their offerings of BLTs and such. Good variety of juices, water and pop and decent pricing for quality food makes this a true Oasis in the middle of the emotional desert a hospital can leave you in. Downside is they aren't available 24hrs so if you arrive too late, you will stare salivating rather then savoring. Definitely a stop worth making, even if you don't have to go to the hospital for anything else.

The first Olive Garden that I ever visited outside of Ontario when the franchise still existed in the province, but within Canada, was this eatery on Portage Avenue. It shares a parking lot with Red Lobster on the west side, with an A&W on the right. I didn't have a car during my first four years living in Winnipeg. Taking two buses to get to this Olive Garden was a breeze from Osborne Village, especially with the bus loop in front of CF Polo Park across the street. I recently relived a bunch of eateries that I used to frequent years ago. I decided to come back here for lunch last month when I was on vacation. I drove into Winnipeg from Steinbach at around 1 pm. It was definitely easier to find a parking spot for lunch than when I was here at 5:30 pm for dinner at Red Lobster earlier in the week. I backed into a spot fairly close to the back of the eatery and walked over to the entrance. It wasn't too busy. A greeter immediately took me into the dining room. I had Abdiel as my server. As my stay for lunch rolled along, we both realized that we had a lot in common. Frankly, he was a young male version of me, but far more polished than I was at his age. I ordered the following items: - Raspberry lemonade - Zuppa toscana - Shrimp scampi (lunch portion) - Tiramisu My raspberry lemonade came out first. It's my favourite beverage at this eatery. It's yummy. I got refills throughout my meal. My zuppa toscana came out next. It was hearty and yummy. Abdiel asked if I wanted more soup. I was okay... so I thought. Oddly, the breadsticks that usually accompany the soup came to me after I had polished it off. I ended up breaking a bit of the breadstick and sopping off what was left of my soup. My server was exceptionally attentive. He saw me do that and said that he could get me the zuppa toscana broth. He admitted that he does the same thing as I was doing with the soup. I said yes. He brought broth. I dunked all my breadsticks in it. So good and comforting! My lunch-sized shrimp scampi came out next. My usual is the chicken scampi. However, I changed things up. I frankly don't recall ever having the shrimp scampi. It was excellent. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. I got the same angel hair pasta, which was al dente, with the same sauce with diced tomatoes. Only the veggies changed. I got cut-up asparagus, which I loved. The chicken version gets you bell peppers. I like having lunch at Olive Garden. The lunch portions are perfect. They allow me to squeeze in dessert. I got my favourite dessert, which is the tiramisu. My server asked if I wanted coffee. I was good with my raspberry lemonade. I loved having this tiramisu. It was delicious, consistent, and perfect. Abdiel came by to check on me. Yep, I had devoured my dessert. My plate looked like I had licked it clean. We started off talking about the rain and how soothing it was to sleep through the night with it falling. I know that there are times where I just want to dine quietly and be left alone. I also know that there are servers who just want to do their jobs, not get involved chatting up a storm with customers, and leave. We had that happy medium of chatting and being respectful. It was nice. He asked me about coffee. I said that I was a tea drinker more than coffee, but I like iced drinks more these days. He was in the same boat. We talked about tea. He loves mint tea. Wise choice! I do, too. We then talked about scoring good deals at the Outlet Collection. He talked about getting name-brand jeans at heavily reduced prices. I recently did the same thing with my GAP and Torrid cargo pants there. It was cool meeting my kindred spirit. We like deals, mint tea, and sopping up soup with breadsticks. I asked him if I could get a couple of take-home meals. He nodded and asked what I wanted. I ordered two spaghetti with meat sauce orders. Yay! He brought my meals and got me a paper bag with handles. He even placed my food in it. Nice! I settled the bill at the table. I tipped and tapped. I let him know that he was a great server. It was a pleasure meeting him and having him as my server. I don't imagine that he'll be a server forever. He's intelligent and extremely articulate. Whatever he does, he'll be successful. This eatery is fortunate to have him as a staffer. I hope that they see how great he is. I used the washroom before leaving this eatery. The women's washroom remains next to the main doors. The stall that I used was clean. It was wonderful returning to this eatery. I look forward to returning when I'm in the area again. (289)
