I asked about it and he said bread is free but $8 was a cover charge for having a tablecloth (???) not a charge for the bread we did not order even though receipt clearly showed $8 charge for bread. Meh. We went based on past reviews and were disappointed. The Caprese salad was good, the highlight of the evening. It could have used a little more fresh basil I thought. My wife's Prosciutto pizza was okay. The crust a tad undercooked. My veal saltimbocca was 4 pieces of dry flavorless veal in a runny brown sauce with prosciutto on top. Immediately forgettable. I watched a never smiling woman (Dina?) come out to set an empty plate in front of a guest, notice one was dirty, rub her finger across it and then set it down in front of them anyway. After our first full day in Rome and being drenched with rain and hail while waiting for our bus, we were miserable, exhausted, and hungry. Found this place through Yelp and we were able to sit down shortly after they opened. Service was great, the waiter was so friendly and helpful. He helped me decide on the spaghetti carbonara as my main entree. We had a delicious caprese and fried potato croquettes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their pasta, and it was one of our highlights of our trip. My carbonara was most excellent except I hadn't separated the noodles as much which caused the egg to get scrambled. We ended with a cheese plate and panna cotta, and both were exceptional! So delicious. We started with potato croquettes- lovely! Not spicy but delicious in potato-y goodness. Also tried the fried artichoke and it was just wonderful. Then we segued to pasta. I had the carbonara and my husband had the clams. My was purely wonderful. Like eggs Benedict on spaghetti- that's the closest I can get to the taste. The pork is crispy and delicious. The clams are simple. Not highly spiced. Very pretty presentation. After dinner my husband had tiramisu and I had panna cotta with forest fruits and espresso. We ordered the vin rosso- 1/2 liter- and it was super. I think it was 6 euro and it was great! Seriously decadent meal at the great price of 51.50. Since a picture is worth a 1000 words see my pictures. Although I was so excited about the dessert we got half way through before I remembered to photograph it. Edit- Second trip- back for dinner- had 2 salads, one big one little, delicious! 2 fried artichokes, a dish of chicory, some croquettes (this time the ones with olives!). Then we had oxtail ragu and beef strips with asparagus- everything was good, but those fried artichokes! And the oxtail ragu was pretty amazing. A nice place to stop for lunch before the Vatican Museum. We didn't feel like a big meal for lunch so we ordered a variety of antipasti. I'm not sure what the high reviews are all about. If it were just for my meal I would give it 1 star, but my friend really liked hers so I bumped it up. I started with a risotto ball, what we call Arancini here but I forget the name for it at the restaurant. It was supposed to be a fried rice ball filled with mozzarella cheese. The inside wasn't hot enough, all of the rice just stuck together, and there was hardly any cheese. I had the Spaghetti Vongole and it was not good at all. The noodles were too al-dente, the clams were tiny and not the freshest tasting, and the olive oil sauce was minimal so it lacked flavor. My friend ordered fish, I believe it was sea bream. They bring it to your table whole and de-bone it for you. She said it was tender and delicious, as well as the potatoes it was served with. Maybe that's the way to go. read more

This restaurant is very close too Vatican and recommended by USO -- we were immediately a little weary of it being too touristy--it wasn't. Plenty of locals among the minority non-Italians. I came here for second lunch (hey I was on a carb heavy diet) and truly didn't know how much space I had left in my stomach, or if I could tough it out for another pasta meal. If you're looking for a place with an incredible atmosphere and good food, this is the place! We shared a wonderful mixed salad that had a generous amount of mozzarella. My wife's pasta dish was a little on the salty side, but mine was good. The Tiramisu was perfect! Our waiter, Donaldo, was amazing and made our experience the best we have had in Rome! We got to meet Vito and the rest of the crew, and they were so welcoming. My wife and I will definitely be talking about this place as a highlight of Rome. We ate here 2 nights ago & enjoyed our entire meal. This would have been a positive review. However, we returned tonight hoping to enjoy the Sgroppino dessert drinks w our young adult children. We were greeted & I explained we were hoping to have some Sgroppinos. The man very rudely said, "It's a dessert!" I said, "Yes, we would like to have some." He said, "No. This is a restaurant." I replied, "Yes, we were here the other night & enjoyed some & were wanting to have some more." He said, "No! Sorry." I said, "So you are not interested in serving us as customers? Ok, great. Nice service!" Many restaurants in Italy are known for being places to stop for a before/after dinner drink. This restaurant refused our service tonight and, therefore, our money & our positive review. It's a shame a business turns away a returning customer who came back specifically for one of their menu items. The prices are good. I came back from the Amalfi Coast where I ate great pizza everywhere. I ordered a Margherita pizza at this restaurant. It came out with cheese and tomato sauce. No basil. It tasted more like convenience store pizza than anything on the Amalfi coast. My dining mates got the Cacio e Pepe, gnocchi with seafood, and carbonara. The flavors were underwhelming. We were disappointed. Appetizers were good! The fried artichoke was nicely seasoned with salt and pepper. The leaves tasted like chips! I was a big fan. The potato croquettes were delicious. Came here at the recommendation of the USO Rome (just around the corner) and saw the Yelp sticker on the door. So far so good... We arrived a little after the lunch hour; the staff was friendly but left us alone as we were the only patrons - the men played cards in the back corner. One of the staff came over and put in the WiFi code so we could have access; they never pushed us out the door after we were finished. Spouse and I were a little famished from our tour of the Sistine Chapel and were looking for something quick and filling - we shared the bruschetta, she had the pizza with prosciutto, and I had the quattro formaggio. We were staying in a B & B across the street and picked this place because of good reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor. I ordered spaghetti cacio e pepe, and my husband got spaghetti frutte di mare. Our son and daughter in law ordered pizzas, and we got a fried artichoke to share. I guess we got spoiled at some restaurants we'd visited earlier in our trip. Everything was good, but not outstanding. My spaghetti was a little too salty, and my husband's, while very good, fell short of a seafood pasta he'd had while in Venice. The pizzas were typical for what we've had before in Rome--big, flat pizzas without the bubbles and charring typical of Neapolitan pies. The fried artichoke was really good, but seasoning had been applied unevenly so that some parts were quite bland and others overly salty. Service was very good, and the prices were in line with what we've spent elsewhere. I might eat here again if I were in the neighborhood, but probably wouldn't make a special trip to come here. read more

We arrived in Rome at 7pm on a Sunday after more than 24 hours of traveling from Los Angeles...we were tired, we were hungry, and we realized our original dinner plan wouldn't work because they were closed on Sundays (something we overlooked in our planning). A quick Trip Advisor search led us here, and we are SO lucky it did! We walked from our hotel in the rain, and didn't arrive until after 9pm, but were so glad their doors were still open! Vito greeted us in true Italian fashion...friendly and eager to hear where we were from (he proudly pointed to a review hanging on the wall from the LA Times). An American couple sitting next to us had been in Rome 4 days, and had already been here 3 times...they raved about most everything on the menu, so we knew we had little to worry about. We started with some house red wine (YUM) and insalata caprese, which was delicious. For our main courses, I had spaghetti alla carbonara, and Boyfriend had a seafood dish I can't exactly recall--spaghetti, with mussels and possibly clams? Both were out of this world!! We lingered for a while, starting to feel like locals, and timidly practicing our Italian. At the end, we ordered some limoncello, which was on the house--a very nice & appreciated gesture. If we had spent more time in Rome, I assure you we would have gone back...alas, we were off to Tuscany early Monday morning. We will for sure be back next time, though! read more
