We hired people to remove and install a new water heater…read morein November 2023 and they scratched and dented up our floor very badly (see a few pics I attached which are worse in person than they look in the pics); which we only saw after the installer left. They are deep and very obvious/noticeable scratches that cannot be fixed without fixing the entire floor in the house, as it's all the same wood and style. I emailed them, called more than 3 times leaving a voicemail and messages with whomever answered the phone. I was told they would let the manager know, but I never received a response from anyone. At that point I figured it wasn't worth it. Then, fast forward to a few weeks, (now 2.5 years later), we find out we had a gas leak. The People's Gas repairmen came quickly and said they were shocked at how loosely the pipes for the water heater were put together! He showed me how he didn't even need a tool to take them apart! In two small twists the pipes were off! So apparently, for 2.5 years, we have had a gas leak and didn't know and are very lucky to be alive at this point. We have a child and have many family members and friends over! We are appalled! So, not only did this company permanently destroy our floor and act extremely unprofessional by totally ignoring us, but they almost killed us due to their negligence! Literally ANY company would be a better choice.

In my case, a faulty water heater needing to be replaced. The Good: incredibly responsive, tried to troubleshoot over the phone and worked to visit the immediate next day. The (Real) Bad: they price gouged me in a time of peril. Unacceptable. Knowing I was up against the ropes, they charged me what was nearly 3.5 times a normal charge for a water heater replacement! I asked for them to be more accommodating on the quote but came back with 'nothing we can do'. I guess they assumed I'd pay that exorbinant price. I didn't. I got quotes from two other responsive plumbers which proved Plumbing Department was attempting to gouge me. I'm glad I went elsewhere. It's a shame they have such speedy, friendly initial support, but followed it with egregious quotes. Hope they can do better in the future. UPDATE: spoke with owner, Jeff, to discuss the experience. To provide further details underscoring the notable pricepoint disparity: Plumbing Department - install Bradford White water heater with licensed, bonded and insured company Other Plumber Quotes at 3-3.5x less - install a Rheems Performance water heater from licensed, bonded, and insured company. I have no qualms with how Jeff chooses to operate and appreciated their initial support, but found the pricepoints for the install, at a moment of peril, arresting and glad I didn't settle with what was clearly an elevated pricepoint. I just had Nick come out to troubleshoot a water heater repair caused by a leak from a saddle valve…read moreabove my furnace heading to my furnace humidifier causing the pilot light to go out to to the pooling water and moisture at the base of the unit. The service team was able to fit me in same day by putting me on standby. Nick was able to diagnose, stop the leak, inspect that the leak had done no further damage, and ultimately get the water heater working within 5 minutes of his arrival. Better yet, he said it was a simple fix and did not charge me, but just asked that I keep them at the top of my list for my next job! Very friendly and presentable all the way. He also assessed my heater and said I probably had about another two years to go before needing to replace, and gave me a written quote for a new water heater and to replace the saddle valve with an angle stop. The angle stop cost was a bit high, but the water heater replacement was very reasonable (just being fair). I am definitely going to reach out to them for my next plumbing job.

After a horrible experience with another contractor, and a big name plumber unable to come inside of a week and a half, Apex was able to show up within a few days, quickly diagnose the problem, and form a plan of action with a reasonable estimate. When the dig started and the full scope of the problem became apparent, a 1-day job turned into 3. But Chuck and the crew kept me updated at every step with clear explanations of what, why, and how. I found VanderBosch because they ranked high on Google when I asked about the job. Actually, they had a whole blog post about the service and I learned a lot. Jordan called me back and let me run down the whole project and told me what they would charge. I walked away from the conversation really wanting to give the job to VanderBosch, but Jordan is a straight-shooter and told me that they couldn't finish the job as fast as his competitor (for boring, but significant reasons). So, this competitor to the initial company took the time to call me back, listen to my issue, give me the straight facts, and all because he was so focused on the well-being of a potential customer that in the end, couldn't even book his company. Why can't everybody be like this? This is some real "city of big shoulder" stuff from a Chicago-based company. In the end, I wasn't able to hire VanDerBosch, but they have a down payment on a future customer.

I made one last effort to get someone and found Adalberto's Chicago Plumbing listing. I was a little apprehensive given he only had two previous reviews, but they were at least 5 stars. Gave him a call and he came out RIGHT AWAY. He worked so hard to clear what was apparently a sediment blockage in my water pipe. The first two times, nothing was able to clear, and he decided the best course would be to locate the blockage and replace the affected section. He was in and out with his colleague in about 2 hours. They found the issue very fast, got the work done wonderfully, and closed up the wall for us. His pricing was very reasonable and I am just SO EXTREMELY thankful for his help. Imagine trying to wash pots and pans in a trickle of cool water without scalding yourself with the better hot water pressure. The work was completed and he showed me how great the pressure is now. I'm in homemaking heaven. I can finally get back to washing normally. I highly recommend Adalberto and his team. His pricing was so fair, his knowledge and work impressive, and he is licensed, bonded and insured.

The HVAC check seemed like everything was fine, but they used it as a sales op to try and sell me new furnace and humidifier, which was working fine at the time (and continues to function 4 years later). Thankfully their 1-year VIP service was the most valuable part of it, because one of the joins for the new water heaters started leaking again almost 12 months later. However, when they came out, they couldn't get the water main to close in our unit, so they quoted me to replace it as an additional cost instead. We said no, and gradually loosened the water main valve to the point where we could get it to close. We believe it was debris from the water main for the building being shut off multiple times for other work recently. Once we resolved that issue, we were able to get them to actually repair their failing original work at no cost. Not sure I would recommend.
