Strolling along Main Street in Bothwell on Sunday afternoon, we decided to try one of the restaurants that we hadn't tried yet. Da Luciano's was order of the day.
It was really busy at the outside seating, people in groups and couples sipping wine in the sunshine. It really does look lovely, with full glass windows at the front, letting you have a peek at the simple and stylish decor inside before stepping foot in the door.
Restaurants in Bothwell set a pretty high gauge for themselves as it is, simply by adorning this street so praised for its fantastic selection of culinary delights. I did not expect to be disappointed in the slightest.
We were shown to our seats, a booth with windows overlooking the outside terrace. The menus are large, not too big to overwhelm but big enough to allow you the privilege of choice. We opted for the paper menu inside, comprised of two courses for £10.95.
We ordered drinks, and after quite a long wait, they came. The waiters were in a real fluster, and seemed stressed and anxious, making us think that Sunday afternoons were usually a little quieter than this.
My starter of bruschetta topped with tomato and corgette was lovely, although the bruschetta itself was over toasted and very difficult to cut into. I enjoyed something a little different though, as I usually go for prawns or deep fried mozzarella as a small plate.
I then ordered the pasta amatriciana, a tomato based sauce with chilli, garlic and pancetta, something which is pretty staple in most Italian restaurants. My boyfriend went for the salmon.
The wait for the mains was absolutely fine, but we had a problem. My boyfriends salmon, was actually seabass. When he informed the waiter of this, he simply said that the person taking our order should have said that the fish had changed. We were not offered a replacement, a sorry, or a change of dish.
Luckily, he likes seabass (probably more than salmon!). However if I had known this dish was on the menu, I'd have ordered it too!
Summing up my pasta dish in one word is easy; HOT! My eyes were watering and my chest was blotchy as I made my way through this large bowl of pasta absolutely heaving with chilli! I can't even say if I enjoyed it because my taste-buds were obliterated by the end. The other flavours never stood a fighting chance.
We decided that we'd leave it at that, asked for the bill, and left, without leaving a tip. I wasn't that impressed. However, I believe that they can do better so I am willing to go back and try again, but it will take a lot for them to live up to the high standards set by their neighbours. read more
