The rumours are true, Tarantino's is delicious! When eating in this postcode it's difficult to pass up Ox & Finch's mouth-watering tapas next door, but it's worth the self-discipline. Now I've tasted the delights of Tarantino's, the new internal battle will be against eating two dinners! I can highly recommend this Italian ristorante for Saturday date night, especially if you're looking for an excuse to break out the swirly dress and heels (though I would recommend a forgiving waistline). Comforting, authentic dishes from the south of Italy paired with a snug little dining room (but not too snug) makes for a very romantic evening. It's also in the perfect location to sneak in a few pre-dinner cocktails at The Finnieston or Kelvingrove Café. Or both. #lush
The food! Tarantinos' menu makes it very difficult to make choices. There was much waffling before choosing the Spiedini di Caprese for a starter and Strozzapreti al Tarantino for a main. The Caprese antipasto was fresh and lovely, though the use of skewers (with small balls of mozzarella and cherry tomatoes rather than layered slices) posed a bit of a cutlery challenge. Mild frustration for the consumer, added entertainment for the dinner companion. Though, once the strozzapreti was put in front of me, I abandoned all table etiquette with gusto. Tarantino's take on this simple pasta dish features slow-cooked garlic, onions and capperi, olives, tuna, chilli, wild mushrooms, and fresh asparagus. All my favourite things, simmered in tomato sauce and generously tossed with the hand-rolled pasta. Savoury umami of olives and tuna and mushrooms beautifully complimented by the ultimate satisfying mouthfeel that is pasta.
The Hubs went for the Pizzette di Melenzane e Polenta - the closest thing to pizza on the menu - which I intended to taste, but by the time I looked up from my Caprese (*stab, *hold, *stab, *scrape *stab), it was demolished. This bodes well. He also went for the Ravioli di Cinghiale - homemade and stuffed with wild boar ragu - which I made sure I sampled straight away! Ohmygoodnessgracious! Also scrumptious! This was all set off very nicely, by the way, by a very refreshing bottle of Le Sciare Bianvo Salento. Out of habit, I would normally have gone for red at an Italian restaurant, but we'd started the evening on white and it seemed best to carry on. Though an unusual pairing - for me - with Italian, it made a very delicate, palate-cleansing accompaniment. For dessert (obviously, we had dessert!) we split a slice of the mint chocolate cheesecake finished off with espresso and tea. It's nice to share - very cosy and romantic - but in all honesty, I wish I'd had my own. It's worth mentioning, this minty, chocolately cheesecake is not for the half-hearted-about-dessert mutants out there; this cake fits squarely in the 'sweet tooth' category. The best category :)
I suppose I should have prefaced this review by declaring what a glutton I am for Italian cuisine generally. But then again, who isn't? I will certainly be returning to Tarantino's. Excellent service with a light touch and a snug dining room that gives the impression of being exclusive guests make for a pleasant date night, or any occasion really, I would imagine. The menu is plentiful without being overwhelming, portions are generous without being too much. The location is well-situated near high-quality bars and pubs. But most importantly, there is some really good eating at Tarantino's! read more
