It is a cute little family owned trattoria that has been there for decades, we have gone there many times over the years and it has always been a wonderful experience. The pasta is homemade and outstanding, my favorite is the classic Roman dish, called Amatriciana, it is a red sauce with pancetta and onions served over bucatini or some other long pasta. They also had an appetizer called "baby artichokes" which were amazing, and I don't even like vegetables. Best ever Tiramisu for dessert. Visiting with my family, we felt this was one of our favorite spots in Rome. Tucked away down a small side alley, Da Gino will not disappoint. I stopped by the prior evening to make a reservation for dinner with no problem. We started with the caprese and the prosciutto e melone, both delicious. Fatalistic little bistro with classic Italian ambiance in an alley with plants, flowers and bistro tables. Food was above my expectations even if the service was a a little slow. Came here during a fast lunch break during a conference at the parliament building down the street. I got the ragu pasta which was my first real Italian food after arriving in Rome that morning and it didn't disappoint. Nice meat, perfectly cooked pasta and acidic tomato sauce. The only real complaint was that the service was pretty slow. We were hoping for a fast lunch and I was pretty hungry, but it took longer than 30 minutes between sitting down and actually getting food on the table. Decent experience but did not live up to hype. Put my name in on a Thursday night and waited and hour and half for a table (just walked around killing time). Would have gone elsewhere had I known that my experience would be just ok. Server was not friendly at all even though I spoke to him in Italian. Had the prosciutto e melone to start and it was fine. Cantaloupe was nice and fresh, prosciutto seemed like mediocre quality. Next had carbonara and it was just fine. It really didn't taste like much, but the texture was good. I saw this place on a YouTube channel called migrationolgy. Looked pretty good and I later learned that carbonara originated from Rome. This place is a short walk from the Trevi Fountain. We went in the off season and it was packed with locals. I'm sure it's way worse when more tourists hit it. I don't think the spaghetti carbonara could have been any better. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly and was not over seasoned. The little bits of cured pork matched great with the noodles. Hard cheese graded on top was nice too. Maybe a pecorino romano or parmesan, not exactly sure. It was delicious. The wife had lasagna after our waiter recommended it. It looked more like some type of Italian enchiladas or something. Not what we see in the states. It was delicious. Super soft pasta and that tomato sauce was killer. The waiter insisted that we have some desert at the end. So we got that days special, can't remember what he called it. It was chocolate pudding layered with chocolate wafers and cream. The flavor was pretty close to one of those ferrero rocher chocolate balls. The ones with the hazel nut inside. If you turned that candy into a parfait, this is what it would be. read more

Fabulous is not enough word to describe this place. 5 Stars is not enough to tell the story of how the food was. The Carbonara was absolutely wonderful. Life changing and one of those where you will always remember the flavors and notes as they cross your tongue and it will live with you for the rest of your days. English was not a problem even though we had family with us the staff liked to speak in English with us instead of Italian. Normally I would never order the Liver with pine but that was fabulous.. (November 2012): I was in Rome for 3 nights and I stayed at Hotel Parlamento. At breakfast one morning, Tiziano asked me about my dinner the night before. He had made reservations for my friends and me prior to flying to Rome. After telling him, he suggested a place near the hotel called Gino's, stating, "You should go there, it's like eating at [an Italian] home," and gave me their business card. He said reservations are required long in advance and that sometimes he has difficulty booking a table for himself. It sounded great but I didn't want to cancel the reservations I already had for the evening. After spending the morning in the area, I decided to find Gino's just to see if I could get in right when it opened. It was a little hard to find - located in a tiny alley off Parlamento, with the door entrance practically covered with plant/shrubs. I walked in about 12:20pm where I saw a small group of people eating lunch. From what I could tell, they were the family/owners of the restaurant. One woman walked up to me and I asked (in Italian) for lunch reservations. She asked if 1pm was fine for me. Yes! Done deal! I walked around the area and did more window shopping. I even ended up at the Tiber River, which was pretty muddy looking. I arrived promptly at 1pm. I was given a table near the entrance and hostess area. I looked around and noticed the place was already 3/4s full!! Tables are close together, and the last few had 'reserved' signs. Those tables filled quickly. As I ate my lunch, people came and went, some had reservations, some made reservations for another day, and some were turned away because they didn't have reservations. Wow, it was a popular place. With the exception of three German men behind me, I didn't see any other tourists. That's my kind of place. An older gentleman waited on me, Gino himself! He moved slowly serving several tables. I asked a younger man if that was Gino. This man was one of the sons who told me Gino won't stop working in his old age. Good for him! Lunch was delicious. Gino would give his recommendations (no menu). I started with a hearty riso & verdure soup, which was so filling that I couldn't finish it if I wanted to eat my entrée. Next I had the lamb with rosemary, garlic, and potatoes. Simply prepared, home style, and very good. I had a 1/2 liter of white wine to go with my meal. I didn't jot down the total but it was around 20 euros. Gino was kind to let me have my photo taken with him, which I later showed to Tiziano. Ah-MAY-zing!!! This place was absolutely perfect! The food, the ambience and the people just made it the perfect stop for our day trip to Rome. The staff was so friendly, they were very busy but got us a table. We started with the caprese, hands down, best caprese I have ever had! The cheese was so soft, so delicious, it just melted in my mouth! The tomatoes and basil, so perfect! I could have just sat there and ate that the whole day! I don't remember what I was going to order, but the waiter told me no, you want lasagne, I just looked at him and said okay. Lol. I'm not going to argue. I am so glad I listened to him. When it came out, it looked like enchiladas, homemade pasta with amazing sauce! I ate it slowly, enjoying every bite. My husband ordered the carbonara and it was absolutely delicious! I was never a big fan of carbonara, but this changed my mind. We were both stuffed but our waiter convinced us to have dessert. Who am I to argue with him? I forget what it was called, but once again, perfection! It was like a deconstructed Ferrero Roche candy, but a million times better! For our first night in Rome I really wanted to start our trip off with an authentic Italian meal so after seeing this restaurant featured in a youtuber's Rome vlog (Mark Weins) I decided to call and make reservations. They stay very busy, with both locals and tourists. We managed to get dinner reservations for 10pm which would be insane back in the states but in Rome, the locals eat dinner around 8:30 or 9pm. Upon arriving we were greeted by who I believe was the owner, but he was extremely friendly and cheerful. We ordered wine to start, and to my surprise my husband and I received our own little pitcher of wine - probably equivalent to at least 3 glasses per person. WIN! For food I ordered their carbonara, honestly the best carbonara I had while in Rome! Absolutely phenomenal. My husband can't remember the name of his dish but it was a pasta with mushrooms, it was also very tasty. Lastly we ended our meal with tiramisu and oh myyyyy was it amazing! Overall, this was the BEST meal we had in Rome accompanied with even better service. Also, the prices were extremely reasonable, we paid a total of ~27 euros. I had the hotel make a dinner reservation after seeing the positive reviews and guidebook recommendations. We ordered our food. For me, caprese, risotto, and bistecca di manzo. While we waited, all the tables seated around us (most of them Italians) were served first. By the time we got our appetizer, the couple seated next to us (who came in about 10 minutes after) was getting their first course. We waited between 15 and 20 minutes between each course in the uncomfortably hot dining room. I'm not sure if it's because we were tourists or we did something to offend the waiter, but it was clear other tables were getting better service than we were. The food itself was ok, but I probably could have managed an undercooked risotto and a greasy steak in my own kitchen. I wouldn't come back. If you do decide to come here, be aware it's cash only and having a reservation is a good idea. Hopefully your waiter is in a better mood than ours was. read more

I came here with my boyfriend off a recommendation from another couple who swore Trattoria Gino was a must-eat. We walked around a decently well-known area and found it after a few circles. Tucked in a tiny dark alleyway, it looked as if we stumbled upon a secret. This is an authentic trattoria, meaning that they serve classic Roman dishes with the day's freshest ingredients. Normally, Italians eat dinner around 8:00pm... but that was already too late for us as all the menu items weren't available. I really appreciate the importance they give to their food quality, but if there isn't enough actual food for customers to enjoy, the restaurant misses out on an opportunity cost: our satisfaction. After crossing off nearly everything off the little menu, we let our server decide what was for dinner. What we got wasn't what we craved, but it was absolutely delicious. Come early and come hungry! The interior looks very typical Italian (which can come off as "olive garden" if people don't know the difference): murals on the walls, shelves of antiques, and a cluster of framed photos & signatures behind the cash register. The restaurant experience begins with the first person that you meet at any place. My wife and I had heard of this place through a video blogger (Mark Weins) and I made it a point to include it in our itinerary. Here is some advice: if you don't have a reservation go for a late lunch. We did not have a reservation but all six of us (2 adults 4 kids) were seated within 3 minutes. The waiter was an older gentleman and was both helpful and gregarious. He made us smile and laugh. The food? There are some dishes that you say "Wow! That was good". Then there are others that are beyond words and live forever in your memory. This is the latter. The rabbit in wine was spectacular, the tripe was heavenly, and the typical Roman salad with anchovies blew my mind. Ask the waiter what he recommends. The place is cramped by American standards but it is perfect by daddy standards. It is both a meal and a great memory. read more

Very good. Very old school. Recommended for people who want a real throwback Italian restaurant experience. Came for lunch, reserved a table. Had the mixed antipasti plate, which was well-rounded and nice. Particularly liked the grilled eggplant. Had the tagliatelle bolognese, pasta cooked perfectly and sauce very savory. Also got coda alla vaccianara, very flavorful, very tender, right size portion. Prices are pretty reasonable. Fills up with locals fast, who almost universally seem to order cacio e pepe. Which apparently is a specialty here, although I'm not sure why since it's just grated cheese and black pepper (so how different could one place be from another), but I guess they know best. We ate here on our first night in Rome. The seating outside was covered and the restaurant was situated in an alley, with lots of flowers and plants surrounding it - it was a lovely location. We had a starter of meat and cheese. This was good but not spectacular. My husband had the lasagne - I tasted it and it was the best I've eaten- amazing. My dish - spaghetti vongoli was ok - there were only 8 clams in the dish and the seasoning was very subtle. The spaghetti was buttery rather than creamy/garlicky. This place makes some nice foods to put in your mouth bucket. I had the rabbit and my acquaintance had the ox tail. They were both delicious although the rabbit reminded me of my childhood pet so I went to the bathroom to cry before our meal. We also shared an antipasto that was quite tasteful. The waiter did not know English super well but it was okay because he is Italian and you shouldn't expect everyone to speak English. We've eaten here twice now on our trips to Rome (2012 and 2013). We just love the cozy space and delicious food. Be sure to call or drop by to get a reservation if you want to assure yourself of getting a table as this place serves dinner in shifts at either 8 or 10 and is always packed. We stopped by Thursday to get a Satruday dinner. It has a modest wine list, but the real star here is the food. We splurge at this place and get a wine bottle, antipasto, 2 pastas, 2 secondi, and dessert and even then we get a bill under 80 euros! I'm a huge fan of the rabbit, and my fiance would kill for the oxtail. Neither of us speak Italian, but the wait staff is accommodating as long as everybody is patient. Oh and if you can, get seated in Mario's section (there's only like 12 tables so you have a 50/50 shot). read more

We arrived for a late lunch. The trattoria was filled with mostly local Italians. After negotiating a table with the seemingly disinterested and distracted hostess/cashier, things improved dramatically. The waiter was wonderful and spoke just enough English to communicate with us. Just like we like it! My wife and I split an order of liberally salted and grilled artichokes doused in Italian olive oil. Fantastically prepared and very flavorful. I ordered a pumpkin rissoto-slightly undercooked but uniquely flavored and definitely memorable. My wife had the spinach ricotta ravioli which was outstanding-perfectly prepared and, of course, oiled! The pasta dishes served to those hearty Italian souls around us looked and smelled other worldly. Gino's makes you feel that you are in an old time Roman trattoria where you may likely run into old friends from work or the old neighborhood. A great vibe to experience as a tourist in Rome that culminates in an extremely satisfying Italian meal. Highly recommended for lunch for the food and experience. read more
