This place has pretty great food and is not overpriced. The service isn't great but it's Italy so that's basically what you come to expect especially in Rome. They will try to work you over for every last cent they can that is simply the Roman way to deal with American and Tourist. Back to the food however, any dish with lamb is a must try especially the lamb chops which was my favorite thing. The caacio Pepe one of the most well known dishes was a bit too salty. I enjoyed the fettuccini more so as it was balanced well with the ham. We ordered a bottle of wine the "sommelier" is a bit pushy and a little rude but once agin...ROME. In summation this is an above average restaurant in Rome and the food is high quality. You can get better pasta elsewhere at place like Osteria Da Fortunada (absolutely amazing) I would have gave this place 4 stars had it not been for the service and rudeness of the main staff. read more

My order: Limoncello Tortelli alla carbonara con tartufo Nero (€18) Fried artichokes It was my first time trying limoncello. Let's just say that after trying homemade limoncello twice, it is NOT for me. I just don't like it. The artichokes was gross. Just a bland taste. (First time eating artichokes by itself) My pasta dish tasted ok. Not a big fan of the filling. The white truffle didn't have much of a taste. They were sliced very thin. Made an 8:30pm reservation and wasn't seated until 9:20. The waitstaff and the host were rude, and it was overwhelmingly clear that the host was seating local Italians before any and every foreigner. Not a good look. As for the food, the spaghetti was too thick, undercooked (more under than 'al dente' trust me) and had a bizarre flavor. The sauce was watery and forgettable. The carbonara was much too tasteless for such a flavorful dish. The panna cotta dessert was ok, amazing fruit on top but the panna cotta itself, the actual part the kitchen can control, was terribly bland and boring. I will not be back. Da Francesco is POPULAR. Make a reservation at least a couple days in advance. Do a walk-in and you'll be waiting at least an hour to secure a table at one of the most coveted restaurants near Piaza Navona. Thanks to the other yelpers we were able to get a reservation right when they opened, and I kid you not there were people lining up at the door 15 minutes before they opened just to try and score a table! Moving on to the food: when you go to a place like this, you should splurge on the crazy dishes that are a little more pricey. A simple margherita pizza won't meet your expectations, but the buffalo mozzarella, or the tartufo (truffle) will. Same goes for pastas. The black truffle carbonara will change your life. All the classic italian dishes are good, but it's worth it to spend a little more on the stuff with the awesome ingredients! Service is great, super friendly staff. Good quality wines, especially when looking at the local competition. The Bruschette Della casa were really tasty, the bread was amazing and the different spreads had high quality. Our primi - the spaghetti cacio pepe - was amazing! Al dente, tangy, excellent. Our table neighbors were horrific. One decided to ask the waiter if his lamb wasn't actually chicken (what the hell) and started to bitch around. Still everybody stayed calm. We went for dinner and this was one of the best meals we had in all of Italy. We started with the burrata and then split the grilled squid and the spaghetti carbonara. The carbonara was amazing. Definitely make a reservation a few days in advance since we still had to wait even with a reservation. If you can, sit outside. One of my newest favorite spots in Rome! After a long morning/afternoon in the Roman heat, my friend and I were craving some delicious pizza. I had been eyeing this spot on yelp for sometime and realized it wasn't too far from where we were. I'm so glad it was! We came around 2 PM, and I was a little worried it would be too crowded to be seated right away. We were actually seated the minute we walked in, and given menus right away. I knew we had to try the black truffle pizza and one other, so we went with a classic margherita. Both were absolutely delicious, but I know that I'll be dreaming about that black truffle pie for a long time! It was so delicious and perfectly cooked with the exact right amount of truffle. We both agreed it was maybe one of our absolute favorite things we are through our trip. Service was fine and we actually got our food fairly quickly. Prices were great too! I came across this place (I think i've said stumbled too many times now!) as I left from Etabli - its on the west of Piazza Navona and has the best pizza with mozzarella and tomatoes ...Mmmm... yummy in my ever expanding tummy ! ! I put away a whole pizza and could have done another but I did not want to shock the company and so i refrained. I went back again for more! Thankfully the few times I did go there was not much of a wait, the staff was super friendly, the food came out quick and fresh. Street musicians can bug you if you sit on the outside and play a tune or two for a few bucks, not bad at all. Before I even get started with the review... if you want large pieces of shaved truffle on your pasta, make sure you get the one with the SEASONAL Black Truffle. There are other options with Black Truffle, but they don't come with the large, shaved, delicious pieces. This place was so good, we came here twice. The first time, I had the Spaghetti Carbonara. Luxurious flavors in every bite. The perfect al dente noodles. I didn't know what al dente meant until I had these. I mean, I've had places say they cook it al dente, but this one was made the best al dente I've ever had. The bacon had a little crisp to it and added saltiness to the dish. The pecorino cheese was salty, but it just worked so well with the rest of the ingredients! The second time I came here, I got the Spaghetti Amatriciana. This is red sauce based with bacon, pecorino cheese, and red peppers. I thought the red peppers would be like red bell peppers, but it was crushed spicy red peppers. You couldn't even see it. It was nice and spicy. This dish was particularly hot temperature-wise. I liked that. It's different from the carbonara which can't be as hot, maybe because of the egg. I enjoyed this dish as much as the carbonara and I'm glad I tried both a "white" and a "red" noodle dish. I'd definitely come back here again! read more

I was really looking forward to this place, since it was recommended by a friend of a local friend that grew up in Rome. It's filled with local diners actively engaged in conversation. Although we made reservations we still had to wait 30 minutes. What's the point of making reservations if you have to wait anyway? I've learned in Italy, reservations mean very little unless you're the first diners in. The affordable menu had a wide range of options, but sticking to what Roma's known for, we choose spaghetti carbonara, jewish fried artichokes, truffle white pizza and egg plant parm. The carbonara was decent, but I would have appreciated more bacon. The fried artichokes weren't cook thoroughly so it make it difficult to eat. The ones at Sora margherita are much better. The Truffle white pizza was solid, with nice whole shavings of truffle, YUM. The egg plant parm was below average. For deserts we had the standard tirimisu and chocolate moose, both pretty good. This is a tough review to write because Da Francesco was by far the best restaurant we went to in Rome, but does not compare as well to the restaurants we visited in Florence. That said, Florentine and Tuscan cuisine in general is more enticing to us than Roman. So the 4 stars is comparing apples to apples, and looking at Rome restaurants only. The atmosphere here is very cozy and homey and the prices are a little more reasonable compared to the other touristy areas in Rome. We were welcomed immediately and shown a table but by the time our meal was over the restaurant was packed. We had a bottle of the Nero D'avola (delicious) as our vino choice. We skipped the appetizers and went with two pastas to share - the tortellini y funghi and the fettuccine with black truffle and bacon. The tortellini was amazing - perfectly stuffed with porcini mushrooms in a delicious white cream sauce. The fettuccine was very tasty but the tortellini stole the show. Absolutely excellent. We finished with the salad with tuna, which was fresh and light but possibly unnecessary as we were so full by the time it came. I would definitely recommend this restaurant as a Roman gem and worth visiting. But if you're going to Italy for cuisine, go to Rome first because Florence and other areas will blow your mind. read more

My favorite meal in Rome. You know this is the place to go because its full of locals, and there are chess games going on at the restaurant next door. I discovered cacio y pepe here...sweet mercy this is one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had, and I'm Italian-American. The gnocchi and pizza are also superb. This is that inexpensive local place that is tucked away where the residents go to eat great food to get away from the tourists. Get the house wine here (and everywhere for that matter). I would consider this our best meal in Rome. Gorgeous and relaxed location with the kindest staff I met anywhere on this trip. If there is a line (and there most likely will be) just take it as indication of how good it is and wait! Both visits we had the antipasto rustico followed by a pizza and pasta. The pizza was wonderful, the thinnest crust I have ever had, truffle and mozzarella. I am sure I will dream of that pizza! The pasta was delicious too, I can't remember the name of the first dish we tried but on the second visit we switched to the truffle pasta. Agree with another reviewer that it probably had a bit too much olive oil but it all tasted so good who cares? I wish I had saved room for desert but it seems I will just have to return to Rome to sample the Tiramisu I jealously watched someone else eat. We walked and walked and walked a million blocks just to find this place, but of course that's the experience with Rome everywhere. It was pretty much packed to the brim with Americans and a few Italians - we found a seat at a communal table where we met some very nice gay men from the States. The pizza was pretty excellent - not the best I've ever had, but pretty good. I was a little sad they didn't offer cheap house wine in carafes like a lot of other places in Rome do. My girlfriend got the gnocchi in a cheese sauce - I stuck with pizza. Both of us quite enjoyed our meal - I think the pizza was better however. We were also extremely jealous or the artichoke appetizers that our neighbors ordered - it looked awesome. Jealousy ensued. The service was efficient if not friendly - which I liked. Da Francesco was the highlight of my dining experience in Rome. In fact, my family and I loved it so much that we had dinner here twice during our short stay in the area. Da Francesco completely changed my attitude towards Italian cuisine, and I was very happy to have that experience. An Italian joint of comparable cost in the US serves pretty bland and forgettable food, which is why I have never thought very highly of Italian cuisine. However, Da Francesco taught me what Italian cuisine is all about, and my appreciation for Italian cuisine shot way up. During our two dinner trips here, we had tried at least one dish from each course. Everything was very good, but there were some exceptional dishes where the natural flavors of each ingredient was brought out. The beauty of Italian cuisine is featuring each ingredient without being overpowered by a heavy sauce or another ingredient, and Da Francesco does a great job of showcasing ingredients. The most memorable dishes there were the pizza. Their pizzas were the best I had during my trip. What really set them apart from other pizzas was the crust. It was crispy on the outside, be very soft inside. It had just the right chewiness to it, while other joints sometimes served crusts that were a little too crispy and hard. The texture of the crust was also very consistent across the five to six pizzas we tried. My favorite pizza was the one with the sausage and onion toppings (forgot the name in Italian). The pizza looked relatively simple, but the sausages were so flavorful, and complimented the sweetness of the onions perfectly. Aside from the food, the staff were also very nice. We were being touristy and kept ordering and trying everything, but our waiter was very understanding and patient with us. He wore a smile the whole time, and even taught us how to pronounce the various dishes. It was a very wonderful dining experience, and I can't wait to go back! read more

Do not go to the upstairs part of this restaurant. The food was mediocre at best. Very very small portions and grossly overpriced. I ordered a "special" pasta dish of porcini & truffle oil over linguine. 30 euro!! A tiny salad of very little arugula porcini mushroom and shaved Parmesan 25euro!!! Bread & a glass of water. Total was 57euro. There was nothing listed on the menu this expensive. I'm sure the waiter took advantage of the "dumb American tourists"! When questioned he said those were the "upstairs" prices. On our last night in Rome we tried this place really hoping to have the same experience as everyone else in regards to amazing, call home tony our friends food. Needless to say we were a little disappointed. This place is easy to find right off of Piazza Novana, and be prepared for at least a 20 to 30 minute wait on most nights for dinner. Overall the menu selection provides a lot of variety but the food left something to be desired. We had the smoked salmon - it was ehhh. Ok but not amazing. Then we also had the spaghetti alla carbonara, and it was quite disappointing. Very thick chunky sauce instead of more cream like. Then we also had the grilled steak with arugula. The last thing I expected was the meat to be served in a shallow dish with the meat still floating in the grease liquid along w the fresh arugula. We were here in October. How did I not review this place? I must have had internet issues while we were there so I was unable to "check in" on yelp as a reminder to review later on. My new hubby and I loved this place. The night before we ate at Armando Al Pantheon near the Pantheon and another place the night prior and I was becoming REALLY disappointed in Roman food. I was forewarned in advance that Rome isn't known as a foodie town in terms of Italy standards. I was so happy to find Da Francesco, and yes it seems like a lot of tourist eat here, but #idontcare because the food is good! We ordered two pastas and fried calamari. The fried calamari was so fresh and tasty! It didn't come with the usual dipping sauce per American standards, but it really didn't need it. The batter was light and seasoned perfectly. The best is that it was served with tentacles which is the best part of any calamari. I ordered the bolognese, and it was better than any bolognese in the states. It was delicious! I could not eat it all, but I did try. The pasta was super fresh and had the nice al dente chew to it. The hubs ordered a dish with truffle...I forgot what it was, all I remember is that I loved my bolognese. Would definitely return the next time I'm in Rome...however, there is so much more in Italy, so not sure when I would return to Rome next. read more

Awesome location right near piazza Navona which is my fave area of Rome. Lively and fun atmosphere. People are drinking, laughing and having a great time. The first time I tried to eat here the wait was over an hour around 11 pm on Sat. So I made a reservation for Tuesday night and got in very easily. Wait staff a little gruff but that's not a big deal. What is a big deal is the truffle pizza. Oh. My. Gawd. This pizza is legit. It was delicious, sensual and light. So Rome, is kind of a tough city to get a really good meal in, but not entirely impossible. That said, I'm still surprised at the rave reviews and what a high rating this place has. You all must have had some really really bad meals while visiting the city. From the start, it's clear that this place is benefiting from having such a high ranking on yelp, and the clientele on a Saturday night reflected that. Mostly Americans, nervously pacing around the piazza as they wait to be seated. Once we got in we had fine service and a fine meal. We shared the Cacio e Pepe and a margarita pizza. Both were just OK. There are far better places to have Cacio e Pepe in Rome, and the pizza was passable but not at all worth the 45 minute wait for a table. Don't drink the kool-aid about the house wine either. While it is a decent deal, it's not as mindblowing as some other reviews have suggested. I can't remember exactly but I think it's priced at 7.5 EUR / bottle, which seems about right for the quality, just be sure to temper your expectations if you do decide to go with it. It won't change your life. There are a few bars near the restaurant and the piazza had a nice (if not eclectic) mix of people that kept us entertained while we waited for our table, and the bars were fun to visit after dinner for a nightcap. read more
