This place was a 5-star months ago and it was one of our go-to spots but it seemed like they had gone downhill since. We went on a Monday during lunch and the girl that was at the counter was very slow and didn't seem to understand how to work the cash register. The tables had some weird white chemical film on them from the generic cheap cleaner they used. The food took FOREVER to come out and when I finally did show up it wasn't even hot. I ordered the Spam Loco Moco and the rice seemed like they added too much water or it was leftover from the previous day because it was sticky and mushy. To say our one and done dinner outing to this restaurant was a bummer is an understatement, sad to say. The wife has been wanting to try this place for some time and I relented to join her. On our only trip to Hawaii, a few years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed many of the traditional foods we ate there; so now the time had come to try the local flare. We ordered at the counter and they call your name if dining in, which we were. I ordered the chicken wing plate (spicy), which came with rice and macaroni salad. My wife ordered the combo plate that included Kalua pork, Teriyaki chicken with rice and macaroni salad. We both ordered a Musubi on the side. They called my name and our meals were served in styrofoam containers,with the lids closed. This was a bad idea, especially for wings, depending on how long the wings had already been concealed in said container. I was disappointed upon opening the container and finding my wings had quickly lost any semblance of crispiness to the coating due to the steam issue within the container. The flavor was still there, but it was hard to get over the "mush" texture. Sadly the rice was bland, as was the macaroni salad. As for the Musubi - the spam slice was very thin and did not taste as if it had been seasoned well during the frying process. They wrapped an entire piece of pressed seaweed around the Musubi, instead of just a band, so that was a nice touch. It was just okay, taste-wise. My wife, who has ZERO Polynesian blood in her, has made her own Musubi and Hawaiian style macaroni salad since our trip to the Big Island and they have both been quite delicious! As for her meal she was very disappointed in both the pork and chicken. The pork was lacking something (she could not pinpoint it exactly) and the chicken's Teriyaki was so faint it could barely be tasted. As for her Musubi and macaroni salad she was able to pinpoint exactly what they needed to be enhanced. We were both disappointed in our meals, as they missed the mark in our eyes of what tasty Hawaiian food should be like. Would either of us return? Sadly, only if we were invited and that person was paying for the meals. As a side note eating out of styrofoam containers sucks, when dining in at any establishment. read more

I'm super sad that this is a bad review. I catered my Dads 65th bday dinner. I'm sad because everyone (a family of about 12 of us) all agreed is was simply not good. For starters I ordered Thursday with a pick up for Saturday. I asked for 11:45 I got there at 12:00 food wasn't ready. I waited until after 12:15 for my food. When we sat down to eat about 30 min later we realized the Lumpia could have been cooked better. It was soft. Not Crispy. I ordered macaroni salad (this was the best Of the whole meal) rice, noodles, and the pork. The Pork was the most unsatisfactory. It was just not tasty and very greasy. I wanted Hawaiian bread, they didn't have so I had to stop at store on way..... I feel bad because they seem nice. Family owned business. I did come to there establishment when it was at other location and it was delicious. I had chicken katsu previously. And my kids and I were excited to have this for our event. Wholly macadamia!!! Apparently I've NEVER had real loco moco before!!?!?!?!? I ordered the loco moco, 7 haupia malasadas, lumpia, and a pineapple coconut smoothie. All were delicious!! Loco moco - not the 1st time i ate loco moco but it was my first time eating it from here. Not like I've nver been here before either... we used to come here long time ago when they first opened. It's just an inconvenience for us to go here since we live by Wildomar, it's out of way. Anyway... as i first bit into the rice/gravy i was happy bc it was good. Then... when i tried the patty... The hubby had tried their samoan food before, and said it was pretty good but felt the portion was a bit small. First thing I've ever tried here was the short ribs which i felt were a bit small too. All da grindz! Finally a great island spot in the Riverside area. They got everything I'd want when I need that poke fix or loco moco. I'd say the best part about this place is the environment. It's definitely a place I'd come to sit down with friends for grub and watch a game. I didn't get a chance to really look around cause I ordered take out. Here's my take on the food: 1. Poke hand roll - nice little hand held roll that's easy to eat on the go or snack on. I could eat a ton of these. 2. Katsu Curry - I thought it was great. I reviewed the menu and YAY they have MEAT JUN. A staple Korean / Hawaii dish I just had to order it because another restaurant in San Diego attempts to make it but it's far from being good. I also ordered the fried saimin aka fried noodles with spam and kamaboko and lastly 1/4 lb of spicy mayo poke. Since I checked into Yelp I got a free malasadas. This was the least favorite of the dishes I ordered with the meat jun being the BEST. So let's go back to the meat jun. Wahiawa has the best meat jun on Oahu. (Dong Yang). With that said, I always ate at Dong Yang and whenever I visit and come back to SD, I would bring back about 6 orders and freeze them. Da Coconut has mastered the taste that I've been looking for. Now whenever I want my fix, I just need to drive here. :) So excited that I'm going to post this on Social Media to all of my Hawaii friends who lives out here. First time with the family today for dinner. We ordered to go. Upon getting home, one of our items was incorrect. My daughter wanted the fried noodles and we got a really steamy soup. We love soup but not in this hot weather! The Combo plate was good and I was able to share with my little one.my son said the teriyaki burger was a bit plain but had a bit of flavor to it. Da Coconut Cafe? More like Da Disappointment Cafe. My family and I ordered the Chicken Katsu, chicken teriyaki, and the mix plate with 3 different flavor Malasadas. The chicken katsu is a waste of chicken. It's tasteless, dry, and even the breading is bland. Unless you prefer eating cardboard with sauce, don't get this, please. The chicken teriyaki was okay but didn't have that distinctive slightly sweet flavor or glaze like sauce, it looked like it was just marinated in some soy sauce and they called it a day. Luckily, it was not dry so it was edible. I have no comment on the mix plate because my mom didn't say anything about it. But the malasadas... Oh my.... I mean, maybe if you've never had a malasada before you might think this was a mediocre version of a regular donut with no hole but I've lived in Hawaii for 3 years before and had plenty of malasadas before and this is a pathetic excuse for that. The vanilla filled one had this burnt and dry looking exterior, the filling was completely devoid of flavor, sweetness, or vanilla. And the dough itself is extremely dry also. The other two malasadas were equally dry and disappointing... Overall, I would not come back to Da Coconut Cafe and wish i could've chosen somewhere else at this point. Place is clean and very spacious. Definitely Hawaiian vibe. I was in a rush so ordered over the phone for a pick up. It was nice that by the time I got there, I only had to wait a few more minutes before it was ready. I ordered Hawaiian plate, Lechon pork belly plate, teriyaki chicken and gyoza. The chicken & gyoza was for my son so I was not able to taste it. Actually, he only finished the gyoza and did not touch the chicken. I ate the Lechon but was only able to finish a few pieces. It's not crunchy enough and seems too fatty. Don't get me wrong, I'm expecting fat. I love pork belly and fat but I guess if it's not truly cooked, it just tastes oily. Then there's the Hawaiian plate. I was excited cause the last time I ate lau lau in Kauai, it was delicious. But that was fish. Didn't realize this is pork in addition to Kahlua pork. Not impressed. . Oh there's also a side of lomi lomi salmon that comes with the plate which I've never had before. I looked it up and was excited to try it but it was mostly tomatoes. The little amount of salmon was so salty and when i say little, i mean little! I really wanted to like this place. I was excited but felt let down. I'm willing to give it another shot though. This place has a good variety of different Hawaiian foods to try, including being able to order traditional Hawaiian-style poke by the pound. My family visited one night and ordered a variety of different things to try: Poke, malasadas, kanak attack fries, a loco moco w/ kalua pork, some BBQ short ribs and a kids burger. The poke had decent flavor, but might have been previously frozen as it didn't taste the freshest. The malasadas were dense, which isn't a bad thing, but might feel a little heavy if you were expecting something with a little more fluff and air. They were very tasty, though. The loco moco was very delicious, and the short ribs were tasty. The burger was very plain and dry, but don't go to a Hawaiian place to order a burger lol. All in all, I enjoyed the food, but I think I enjoyed it a little bit more than the rest of my family did. If they were writing the review, they would have given it 3 stars. Had a late lunch at Da Coconut Cafe. They have been open for about a year now in Temecula. This was my first time here so the gentleman at the front desk was very good to go over the menu items. Upon his recommendation I ordered the Kalua Pork. Wow - it was awesome! The meal came with rice, lumpia, and mac & cheese. I will add that the portion was quite generous. He gave us sauce to accompany the lumpia that's right on the money. The Mac and cheese was good but I wasn't expecting the mayo that was mixed in. Service was better this time but the guy behind the counter was prepping food without any gloves or any types of protection during this Covid time. Sad to say but I am not going to go back!!! I have been trying to support the business since I am from Hawaii. I use to refer everyone to this business but not anymore. Understand we were supporting this place 2-3 times A Week!!! NOT months!!! But we were noticing their Food portions is inconsistent for the price you pay. They even forget to give you the items that come with the meal. I addressed three concerns. 1. they never gave our Mac salad with the mini loco moco. 2. There's not enough gravy in my loco moco. 3. The one that takes the brunt is the spam musubi!! There was more rice and the SPAM is paper thin!! When I expressed concerns to Kid who is supposed to be the Manager. He couldn't give me eye contact and barely speak, he said "the spam cutter is broken and everyone cuts different". I replied yes, but not when your running a business! The portions stay consistent. You get a little taste of Hawaii walking into Da Coconut Cafe with the island style decor and merchandise for sale. Sherry is as friendly as can be, and will explain the menu to you and give you good options. She even gave me a sample of the poke to try. For the plates they have numerous meat options (kalua pork, teri beef, teriyaki chicken, short ribs). There or 2 options with the plates: regular and mini. For just me at lunch, the mini plate (meat plus 1 scoop rice, Mac salad, lumpia,) was a perfect amount of food. The regular plate has larger portions and 2 scoops of rice. Kalua pork- so delicious! The pork was juicy, flavorful, and so tender it came right apart. Lumpia- similar to an egg roll, it's the Filipino version. Thinner wrap and it is smaller. Very good! Loco Moco- I was not able to try this, but Sherry says they marinate the burgers in teriyaki before putting gravy on them. One of the most popular items, will definitely be back to try! Everything is good except the fact that their chicken curry is overly battered so it's like your eating a chicken sandwich instead. There's the common Hawaiian entrees, lumpia (Filipino egg rolls), Mac salad, poke, and fusion (Kailua pork nachos - a little too sweet for my liking). Small dining area that fits about 20 (including bar height seating). Outdoor seating is shared and you'll get some stares from neighboring restaurants that are jealous knowing that they didn't get your business. Parking is plenty with extra in the back. For starters, my rib dinner was mostly fat and bones, and tasted like inferior quality older meat. The rice was crusted over from sitting out for hours, but the macaroni salad, however, was good. My companion's Hawaiian meal was even worse, and he left most of it. The meat was wrapped in a gooey stringy substance, maybe rotten palm fronds, but who knows? His dessert, a congealed square, was tasty but only the size of an ice cube. All in all, dining here was an expensive mistake. Perhaps their breakfast selections are better. Service is over the top! I get my hair done next to the old location and called in an order while I had foils processing in my hair. When I walked to pick up my food I realized that they had changed locations (now 31725 Temecula Pkwy). When I called to cancel my order the owner offered to drive my order to me since I was unable to pick it up. I was so impressed by this very kind service.
